A large part of our strategy appears to be moving the ball until a player gets an open jumper and then take the shot. That may work if you have a team full of dead eye shooters. But in the long haul most teams can't shoot jumpers at a high enough percentage to make that work. Love him or hate him OTZ basic strategy was better than this. Shoot open three's or get to the rim. Avoid mid-range jumpers unless deep in the clock. This increases overall shooting percentage (This years stats - Iowa State 12th - UNLV 63rd) and got players to the free throw line ( This years stats - Iowa State 15th - Rebels 320th) .

We have a soft team playing a soft strategy. If we shoot lights out we can win, but we don't do that too often.

That’s our offense. It’s unimaginative. It’s a decently organized sunset park pick up game strategy. It’s an offense you can perfect and still have lousy efficiency.

It takes 2 minutes of preseason planning to implement. It’s super easy and effortless.

Offense is difficult. It’s the actual xs and os. Defense is easy. Like rebounding, it’s demand (for the most part). We’ve consistently taken the easy way out on offense. The only way a simplistic offense works is if … a) you have multiple shooters/strong playmakers and/or b) a very strong defense to where you aren’t heavily reliant upon efficient scoring (see SDSU).

When you see a team that is either weak with defense/rebounding or sporadic with effort … there some combination of softness/mental weakness and no accountability/low expectations by the staff.

KK screams for them to defend, but they don’t unless they feel like it.

And no, it’s not just a Kevin thing. Happens to a lot of coaches.

People love to hate on Otz, but he is a good coach who has a really good offense. The best scheme of all of the coaches we have had in several years. It worked really well at South Daktoa St. And it is definitely working at ISU.
His recruiting wasn't very good initially, but it was getting much better here. Collins and Kaluma were huge leaps in the right direction. If he wasn't checked out and actually focused on staying here, I think we would be in a very good spot right now.
I was hopeful that Kruger would actually run Otz' offense, (Otzfence?) since he was deemed the "offensive coordinator" Otz's last season here.
Unfortunately we have not.

I absolutely do believe that if Otz was committed to a long career at UNLV, we would have seen something much different. Agree on that completely.

But we were just a temporarily pit stop of a longer plan.

Which angers me. Because it’s UNLV being used. And knowingly being used, UNLV had to facilitate it. It’s not even prostituting, it’s whoring.

Otz ran that 3 man weave with unquick guys. Horrible offense. Otz had some great shooters his 2nd year here but no one could get open cuz no guard could get more than 1 guy to cover him.
