Is a great example as to why taking a TV commentator off the air and making him a head college basketball coach is very risky! Also, he wanted a shot at the UNLV job and some thought he would be a solid choice. Gottlieb is currently the head coach at University of Wisconsin Green Bay who is a member of the Horizon League. The prior coach Sundance Wicki left the program in good shape, was the Horizon League Coach of the year and finished 3rd before taking the Wyoming job. Gottlieb first year appears to be a total disaster. The Thunderbirds are now 2-22 and 0-13 and last place in conference.

An experienced head coach is a must to replace CKK.

We don’t need to reach for a coach in any sport ever again!

You hire a former HC, no assistants who need a learning curve on the job!

We are so far past hiring guys like Gottlieb with Harper as AD!

It was a bad choice from day one. That doesn’t mean he won’t be a good coach someday, who knows? He wasn’t ready, not enough experience.

He had light support from some of the more, um - reactionary fans that don’t think things through and he had some decent behind the scenes push (he knew who to contact, that person knew how to get it out there). But I’ll say this. From beginning to end, it had ZERO legs. Interest was from him to UNLV 100 percent, there was zero reciprocation … I don’t care what the Sun or RJ put out there (Being media, Doug knows how to work those angles, has the contacts to put out BS in hopes that it catches fire with fans).

It depends. Somebody like Dutch that had 20+ years under Fisher …. Yeah, you take the assistant for head coach. To me it depends on experience, everyone needs experience before head … so I wouldn’t disqualify an assistant all the time.

For here? Now? Need HC experience, imo.

So a long time proven assistant or head coach from lesser conference?
Every coach in the MW was either a longtime assistant or a head coach. All were head coaches at 4 year schools except Rice ( Gonzaga ) and Dutcher ( Michigan and SDSU ).

A guy like Rice has been to the NCAA Tourney 10 times. He was slated at Gonzaga as the Coach In Waiting. Sounds great right. Until, you find out he has never won an NCAA Tourney game. I mean it's nice to have that kind of longevity but, what the ****. The Zags would have fired his ass. Just saying.

Maybe Rice overachieved with the team during the year and when he gets to the tournament the lack of talent shows.

Overachieved against some ranked opponent but come MWC play and the MWC tournament Rice and the Rebels underachieved big time!

I thought Kruger would get help from his dad, but that just didn't happen!
