Sluka Redshirting and Transferring

You worked with the perception of ladies in bikinis and then your first summer you work sweeping up trash…probably.

2nd summer was mostly lazy river. The best.
Didn't sweep trash, pine needles occasionally, but collecting tube's at night was one of my least favorite duties... people found all sorts of places to not return tube's to... worst assignment was kiddie pool at end of season... nothing like windy evenings as temps drop with cold water blowing on you constantly... and yeah, fair share of ladies making wildly inappropriate comments, lol...

Talking on ESPN now

Yes ESPN National. Pretty damning comments - no recruit should trust the word of UNLV. Even if there was a verbal commitment of $$ it will blowback badly on UNLV and Odom. Allegedly a verbal commitment was made by Marion. Unless the convo was recorded we’ll never know for sure. Blame on both sides to not document the understand of the relationship. This isn’t the 1980s anymore, the era of playing for the love of the game is long gone. It’s all about $$ and both universities and recruits need to protect themselves. In this regard UNLV should have known better. Highly regarded QBs don’t transfer for nothing. On the other side Sluka picked a rather convenient (high leverage) time to make his demand. Very poor handling by him and his representatives.
Chances are we will never know. But, (and there are a lot of ifs) if the QB didn't get his promised $100,000; and if his agent went to Coach Odom and demanded $300,000 that just doesn't make sense. Also, when did the agent first represent the QB? Was it when he first came to UNLV or was it after they decided they wanted more money?

Sluka Redshirting and Transferring

So the entire crap storm hinges on a verbal offer of $100k from an assistant who won’t be named at a time that cant be nailed down. Got it.

Tell us if it was day or night?

In person or on the phone?

What city?

Who said it?

Not hard to cross check these things
He was named by Sluka’s father… it’s Marion. It’s in another article by cbs sports which goes into detail about the 100k verbal offer

RB Michael Allen leaving as well

Exactly. Reportedly he left a week ago with little fanfare and then his former QB1 quits. Im sure he started getting hit up for comments on why he left, was it for NIL etc so he decided that he needed to say something to not get attached to the QB that quit.

Yep I'm sure not getting reps he thought he would resulted in some bad feelings. But he took the high road.

Sluka Redshirting and Transferring

This is from an article an article in LV Sun and I think it paints a pretty fair picture of what is most likely to have happened:

Sluka's current agent, Marcus Cromartie of Equity Sports, said Sluka was promised $100,000 by a UNLV assistant coach.

Multiple sources said no contract was ever signed, though all NIL agreements are supposed to go through official clearinghouses. UNLV’s NIL collective uses Blueprint Sports to handle its contracts.

Cromartie said that because Sluka was still completing his degree at Holy Cross, he could not sign a NIL contract, typically done with booster-backed third parties called collectives that serve a school's athletes — until after he enrolled at UNLV later in the year.

Sluka did not join the team until preseason practice in August. No written contract was ever put in place, Cromartie said.

“In July, there was no NIL payments. There was no $100,000, I guess you could say zero dollars. He was given a $3,000 relocation fee and that was it,” said Cromartie, who declined to identify the assistant coach and said UNLV head coach Barry Odom was not involved in the initial discussions.

Cromartie said after several weeks went by he reached out to first representatives of UNLV's collective and then Odom to discuss ways to pay Sluka the $100,000 he said the player was promised.

Cromartie said he suggested payments of $10,000 a month over the next five months and even $5,000 per month and was declined. Cromartie said Sluka was offered $3,000 per month by Odom.

“At that point I think Matt felt lied to. At that point he just wanted to stand up for himself,” Cromartie said.

According to a statement released by UNLV athletics on Wednesday, the program considered Sluka’s demands to be “implied threats” and a violation of NCAA rules, and declined to pay.

“Matthew Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the university and its NIL collective in order to continue playing,” the statement read. “UNLV athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law. UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats.”

When he was informed that no money would be forthcoming, Sluka followed through on leaving the team.

RB Michael Allen leaving as well

To his credit he later tweeted that his decision had nothing to do with NIL and was about opportunity. (Playing time I'm guessing)

I thought that was a pretty mature and stand up thing to do considering the poop storm surrounding UNLV.

Could have easily left it open ended making UNLV look worse.
