Slick /Quick Rick is interested in the job

I imagine that we would keep our recruiting class but I don't like the head coach in waiting for anyone. If Pitino retires I want the best available and if it is his son then go for it. Just don't hand it to him.

common, we can pony up 6 million in cash to pay for his buy out and pay for his one season at UNLV.

Why would we want him in lieu of the new NCAA recruiting violations. No thank you. I still like Archie Miller or a new name I heard Tom Thibodaux who was an Assistant Coach under Tark in San Antonio.

I wonder what the people in Louisville think of this nonsensical rumor. What does his team think?

The last thing UNLV needs is Pitino coming to UNLV followed by a bunch of NCAA investigators. Been there, done that!

The rebels have won two games in a row averaging over 90 points/game. Enjoy this season and try to remember that there is university attached to the basketball team!

Thibs is a basketball Sith Lord. Brilliant Xs and Os coach.

My concern would be his ability to recruit and front a program. Hes a really strange dude. For some reason it's just hard for me to imagine that guy dealing with high school kids. Would be shocked if recruiting interested him at all. He's a career NBA guy.

Of course I'd listen if Thibs were interested, but truth of the matter is he belongs in the NBA. JMHO.

He is also being considered for the Nets job. Even if they don't hire him some other NBA team will.

Don't know where that came from but not even remotely close to a possibility.

Sounded crazy to me too. Suppose I probably shouldn't address every "rumor" someone posts. Caught my eye, as a name I haven't heard anywhere for a college job, ever.

If Pitino would come here fully motivated, not to slowly retire, I'm in. That's if he's really interested, which also seems doubtful.

If the Rebels continue with what they've done the last 2 games, it is not far fetched that Simon becomes the permanent head coach

And some more.

If any anybody had any doubts about what the rest of the country thinks of our program, these should shed some light.

Of course as Rebel fans we have a jaded view of what our program is, but these are insulting. I do think some fans on here need to temper their expectations of what is realistic. I don't think it is as much of a joke as some are making it seem. He has stated before that he thinks we are a sleeping giant.

I now want him to come here more than ever.

Expecting Pitino to come to UNLV makes us a joke. So the LVRJ story, made us a joke. Reinforcing that story makes us a bigger joke. Hey if the shoe fits, wear it! At the moment, unlv is joke and I am very embarrassed by that!!!!

Now how does that make any sense? Youmans writes an article, which I am sure he didn't just make up.

How does that make anybody a joke? Should he have just sat on the story since most people think it is not possible?

Kind of obvious that you are just writing an inflammatory post for no other reason than just to ruffle some feathers.

I certainly wouldn’t put much stock in this piece, written by an admitted die-hard UofL fan.

I had to chuckle at the opening argument. “Pitino loves living in Louisville.” It made me laugh because I can vividly remember the same being said five years ago. “Kruger loves living in Las Vegas.” They all (Tark excluded) love where they are, until the next better offer comes along. Fine, he loves horse racing. I doubt he spends much time at the track during basketball season. In the off-season, a 40-minute plane ride will get him to Santa Anita or Delmar. Both far better tracks than Churchill Downs, except for one Saturday in May.

I don’t believe Pitino will ever coach at UNLV, but this article contributes absolutely nothing to the discussion.

It's in reference to the fact that he owns race horses, and the horse breeding capitol of the world is in Kentucky. Not where he can watch races.

I was more or less referring to the fact that there was multiple insults to the school on both of those columns.

I wasn't surprised by the fact that nobody expects him to come here, I don't either, it is a pipe dream. I was insulted at the reasoning, and that they it would be a joke for any great coach to come to this average program.

I have pointed out a few times on this board that this job isn't as coveted and our fans seem to think. I didn't think it was that big of a joke though.

But I wouldn't put it past Pitino to leverage UNLV against Louisville nor would I put it past him to try and leverage to get his son a job either. He is under scrutiny at Louisville right now and who knows what the outcome might be. If the NCAA comes down with the the hammer on him for institutional control then he will be screwed if he doesn't leave before then like Haith did days before the NCAA came to campus to investigate him at Missouri. Look what Missouri is getting now do to their coach. The point is I wouldn't be surprised if he is pre-emptavily pondering a move to save his ass and help his son get a job in a couple years. I hope the hell not because although he is a proven program maker I would hate for the NCAA to have our program in their sights.

At least 6 mill per year buy out and a private jet could help the cause.

You guys are taking Louisville media and the bizarre relationship some of them have with Pitino/UofL out of context.

Example: Here's an "article" from Bozich chastising UK's athletic director for not congratulating UofL enough for their 2013 athletic season... http://www.wdrb.com/story/22572031/...while-recognizing-louisville-athletic-success

During the Karen Sypher thing Pitino called a press conference just to lecture the local media about how he couldn't believe they were talking about these things that were upsetting his wife. And on the day Ted Kennedy died at that! And they just sat there and took it.

Only with the most recent issues have any of them actually started the question the impunity of some at UofL, but even that has fallen off.

My point being, don't mistake the opinion of supposed "unbiased" media for rational thought or as a solid indicator of how reasonable people perceive UNLV.

That being said, I think UNLV can find a coach that will suit them better/set them up for more long term success. (Plus, I want him to stay because I'm going to enjoy watching that situation implode when it inevitably does.)

I will definitely give you that. It was obviously an opinion piece from a comically homer member of the Louisville press. I used those two articles as examples because they were so far over the top.

There will be no new information out there about it since the reports came from Youmans here at the RJ, so I have been googling anything to do with UNLV and Pitino just to see what the national perception is about the scenario.

The view overwhelmingly is that UNLV has no chance to sign a coach of that caliber, because why would anybody with a pedigree waste it on us?

It is a long shot and it would be surprising if he did decide to coach here, just not as surprising and unbelievable as it is being made out to be IMO. It is not only because it is Pitino, it is because it is UNLV is my point I guess.

And why aren't you posting around here anymore? Too much fun being a Kentucky fan right now I suppose. You are a voice of reason and non biased for the most part, two things severely lacking these days around here.

I was wondering how long it would take a kitty cat fan to come running over here to comment on this. I bet you are one of those kitty fans who wears UK garb to UofL games not involving UK

I've actually posted here pretty routinely for a few years. As the end of rebellluver's post pointed out, I haven't posted as much recently, but I still read the board fairly often... especially during something as intriguing as a mid-season coaching change. But thanks for your concern!

I still lurk routinely, but I started working in another school's athletic department about two years ago which A) has events that tend to fill what used to be spare time and B) made me unsure if it's weird for me to be on message boards.

But apparently, sometimes I can't help myself. [winking]

ukcats2008 has been coming here for years, cardsrchamps.

I've always liked Pitino's coaching credentials but those off the court issues are a concern. Surely he's not going to escape this escort business like he did Cyphergate. From what I've heard it's pretty clear cut but who knows, UNC skated on their phantom classes and the NCAA is as corrupt as they come.

Could he come to UNLV? Yup, there's some BIG money lurking around that UNLV program (Wynn, possibly Adelson) that could make it happen. We'll see. One thing I do know, if Youmans is reporting the interest is mutual then Pitino is definitely interested even if it's feigned for leverage as some Cards fans seem to believe.

Hey, cats. Congrats on the job. As long as you identity remains confidential that shouldn't be a problem! Just tell it's not San Diego State lol

Sorry I don't see it. It doesn't make sense either. The money we make off basketball is crazy ridiculous.

Cards fan here. I just don't see any interest in Pitino going to UNLV. I want to point out a few things from this article that paints a positive for him to go to to UNLV but that Louisville has better options:

1. Rick having several influential friends there: He has way more influential friends in Kentucky...both on the red and the blue side. He also has the basketball dorm named after his brother-in-law who passed away on 9-11 in one of the twin towers.

2. UNLV having one of the bests practice facilities in the nation: The Mendanhall Ctr is 35,000 sq feet. Louisvilles Yum! Ctr is 60,000 sq feet

3. Thomas & Mack Ctr one of the largest in the country. The KFC Yum! Ctr seats about 3,000 more. Last year Louisville averaged 10,000 more per game than UNLV.

With that being said, I was surprised to find how nice of facilities you guys have. There is no reason why you guys shouldn't be a consistent top program with the facilities you have. I just don't see Pitino leaving to go somewhere with all the amenities and fanhood that he has here in Louisville. Good luck to you guys on your search. If Pitino does in fact end up going to UNLV, I will come back to eat some crow.

Man....

1- Living in the same Kentucky city as a few of his politician buddies is a pretty silly thing to list as an advantage for staying there. As if he'd lose those friends by moving to Las Vegas. The sort of "influential" people you're referring to have access to planes, and travel all over the place whenever they want. I'm guessing some of his "influential" Kentucky friends even come to Vegas themselves from time to time, don't you think? Where's the advantage?

2- The Yum center and the Mendenhall are both great facilities. Judging one as better because it has more square footage... Gotcha.
If it were me I'd actually prefer the smaller facility in the better city. How's the weather in Lulville this evenin'? 15 degrees? Brrrrr.... Probably a bit cold to squeeze in that round of golf this weekend.

3- Your stadium seats 3000 more people. That's cool. Maybe not enough to influence a coach though I think, right? And of course you outdrew us last year. We won 18 games and had one of our worst seasons in program history. How many games did you win last year?

End of the day I'm not sure I want your coach. And I'm not sure we'd pay him what he'd need. But it's preposterous to think that he wouldn't go for the reasons you mentioned, Catfan. No need to come back and eat crow. Just maybe need to reevaluate your perceived "advantages" is all.

Cardinal isn't the Yum-Yum center practice facility coed? If that is the case the Mendenhall is Men's Hoops only and it's only fair to add in the home of the 70,000 sq ft Cox Pavillion and home of the Lady Rebels and the NBA summer leauge into the discussion. Women hoops in Vegas have their own practice facility at 70,000 ft. It very nice also. Check it out!

The bottom line is facility wise with the T&M, the Cox Pavillion and the Mendenhall Center UNLV is very basketball centric and it's facilities are top 10 and probably best west of the Mississippi.

I don't think those points are valid in the argument of whether or not he would come here.

IF he did come here it would not be because of our facilities anyway. Obviously, Louisville has more to offer as a program than we do. It would be for reasons like, he wants to get away from whatever nonsense is going on over there (investigations, not feeling appreciated, etc), wanting a fresh challenge, believing this program has massive untapped potential, and just wanting to live in a great city like Las Vegas.

Doesn't mean I expect he will because I don't, just that I think we using a completely different thought process.

Is the real issue that the Cardinal fans are in denial about. The hooker/stripper scandal is real and because a Pitino staff member is directly implicated he will get hit with he catch all "lack of institutional control" violation. The question is whether RP wants to deal with the fall out.
