Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread USU

against a 1-4 utah st team, I think our "complaints" are about the habits, attitude, strat and focus are going to get us mauled by roughly 3 of the remaining teams this year.
To be fair... we put up 41 in first and coasted. They're 1-4, but have a good offense that put up points on Boise as well. We definitely sat back way to much tonight and in the 2nd half only rushed 3... it wasn't a great 2nd half plan against a solid offense. Royal is a good WR, Nash at SJSU will be another good WR, but teams also have to stop us and not turn the ball over, which throwing 50+ times will generate vs most QBs

Not wrong, this just still seems concerning to me.

This wins feels like those MBB games during Tark’s prime years when we came up just shy of 100 pts

No pass rush. We are going to have more QBs throwing the ball 45 plus a game.
Yeah, Hawaii, SJSU...
Right now our defense is seeing 20 more passes per game than Miami who has the top passing offense in the Country is averaging at 39 per game...
SJSU is averaging 40...
So there's a good bet we will see more as our offense scores fast...
The good, it's bound to produce a ton of turnovers, the bad... it's makes it hard to protect leads if you're just sitting back

UNLV 4-12 on 3rd down
USU 41/59 passing
UNLV 47 rushes @ 6.7 yds per
USU out gained us 584 to 546
The big difference in the game was USU’s 4 TOs to UNLV’s 0. Balance that out and it could have been a very different game. Can’t rely on that kind of TO margin.

But we do... look at our games this year...
Kansas- 2 picks
Houston- 2 picks
Fresno- 4 picks
Syracuse- 1 pick..

The difference in us being 6-0 right now is a dropped pick... that's our defense, we're feeding off TOs and punishing teams for them. Flip side to that is our defense is tired in the secondary after 120 passes in 2 games and now we had 2 big injuries that could impact things...

And look at those teams record. Boise state and Oregon state won’t be turning the ball over 3+ times. Both will be run heavy. UNLVs defense has to get third down stops and receive punts or they will be 0-3 versus Oregon state Boise state and San Jose state.

…with a lot to clean up
It’s just clearly a lack of focus in the second half.

Unlv has played in some marquee games almost the whole season. It’s possible they blew the doors off USU in the first half and then they got complacent. It’s not a big time game, not on a marquee channel, there’s no real interest in Utah State. The oomph, the sizzle isn’t there.

To me the first half was a tune up for the next few weeks, second half we clearly had some guys that let up, guys watching their teammates get injured or gimpy. I’m 99 percent certain that Woodard is dinged up or still recovering from that marathon vs Syracuse.

One positive on the season is that unlv got out to a great start, something they’ve had significant trouble doing all season. Even against Utah Tech when they scored a TD.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the first few drives were scripted by Marion.

The big difference is the players had all but shut down going into the second half. It was a blowout which is something that coach Odom will need to fix so that doesn't happen again, but the fact is it was a blowout at the half, so looking at the TO margin as the reason we won is apples to oranges.

Most OC’s if not all script the first 10-20 plays. It’s pretty common. Especially with an offense as potent as the Go-Go, he can get pretty creative to generate those early chunk plays.

Yes, for sure stuff to “clean up”, but coming into the second half up 5 touchdowns strategy on both sides of the ball changes dramatically. Even more so once you trade TDs to start the second half.

Yes it’s boring and maybe a little too safe too soon, but when they’re down by that much time is their biggest enemy. Don’t allow quick scores, don’t turn the ball over and give them extra possessions, and milk as much clock as you can.

After trading TDs to start the second half they were going to need to score TDs every time they got the ball AND not let us score any.

Tune up road game on grass, on to the next.

Yeah not concerned at all. It was clear we went into a 3 man front with no blitzes and soft coverage to keep everyone in front in the 2nd half.

584 yards of offense allowed not good. USU also had a handful of chunk plays the first half but the turnovers killed them. BSU won’t have 3+ turnovers.

We actually don't know that... Boise hasn't really been put in a position where they have to depend on Madsen. If they're forced to throw more than usual our defense is set up to create misread with Woodard dropping into coverage. Jeanty likely won't fumble but there's still opportunities, especially if they play tight given where they may be ranked and what's on the line for them..
Our defense actually does fairly well when they can focus on rushing attack and not the past 2 weeks where QBs have basically abandoned running the ball and throwing short passes...Jeanty doesn't really catch passes

We were up 41-7 5 TDs bro. Some of you guys kill me.

Quite true, not here to kill ya. 10-27 second half also doesn't scream dominance. Still had most defensive starters in 2nd half and didn't stop much. Kinda wish offense ran the ball better and killed the clock to help the defense stay fresh. 90+ plays defensed vs 65 our side ran.
