UNLV to play at USC

I still remember the last time we played them. We had the game won but instead we dropped the wide open game-winning TD pass in the end zone. Was it Carlos Baker who dropped that pass, I can't quite remember.

Jon Denton threw for like 2,000 yards that game. And JRob was about to have a heart attack on the USC sideline.

I still remember the camera panning to Denton after the drop in the end zone. Let's just say good thing there was no audio because the dude that controlled the censor button would have gotten carpal tunnel.

To bad Denton was a knucklehead. He could have been really good.

Earvin Johnson didn't come to UNLV until 2001. He was one of JRob's recruits after we won the LV Bowl.

This game against USC was played back in 1997, I believe, when Jeff Horton was still UNLV's coach and JRob was USC's coach.

I'm pretty sure it was Carlos Baker who dropped it... either Carlos Baker or Damon Williams, but it was definitely one of those two. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I do think it was Damon Williams.

Can anybody verify who dropped it?

Losing that game at USC in that way was comparable to the loss UNLV had at Arkansas in 2001 when Punter McDonald dropped the long snap. Both of those losses made me sick.

Yes, it was Damon Williams. Hit him right in the bread basket too. I just remember after he dropped it he ran into the barricade and just sat there for like a minute in disbelief. If not for that drop, UNLV would currenlty be 1-0 all-time against the Trojans.

Yeah, Denton was thrown into the lion's den immediately. He developed quickly, though, and was putting up monster numbers before cutting his career short as a result of his poor decisions. I think he set 4 or 5 fresman passing records that year.

I remember first seeing Denton when he was the QB at Green Valley High School. He was playing against McQueen High from Reno. The kid had a cannon.

Denton made a great play too. He was flushed out of the pocket, rolled left, and lofted it 40 yards perfectly, only to have it go through Damon Williams hands, hitting his gut! I wanted to cry too.

You don't get a better combination of being open and the ball on the money. Unfortunately, the image of the ball passing through Williams' hands is engraved in my brain. I believe that would've tied the game. USC then marched down and made it a two-score game late, where it ended. On a side note, Denton could've owned the UNLV QB passing record book if he hadn't been such a knucklehead.

Actually, I think the TD would have put the Rebels up by 7. There was still a lot of time left in the game when the dropped pass occurred, so who knows if the Rebels would have went on to win. Didn't Williams pull himself out of the game after the drop. I'm sure nobody was more disappointed than him.

Both teams were trading score for score. I believe there were several lead changes. Denton was keeping us in it. That dropped pass would have given us the lead again.

The dropped pass would have put UNLV up by 7. Instead it lead to a USC drive and score. Rebels could do nothing on their next possession (I do not remember if they turned the ball over on downs or an interception/fumble) USC got the ball back and scored again and put the game away late.

Whatever happened to Denton? I was only about 13 or 14 when he was throwing for 500 yards a game.. Was he one of those 100 dollar talents.. With a 10 cent head like certain recruits out of Vegas whose name we won't mention..

I'm pretty sure he's still in town. I saw him out and about a year or two ago but just talked with him briefly.

He transferred to EKU, played a year then either quit or got booted to my recollection. He was working somewhere around town, one of the papers did a story on him a couple years back.
