Being one of the worst teams in football is awful. But I think it's even worse for fans to have cheered on a National Champion and have it descend into obscurity.

As far as National football relevance goes we have been one kind of awful or another for the entire program. Never have we been in any discussion of being a Champion.

But there are teams that have been National Champions in the recent past that are now afterthoughts. I'm thinking Tennessee and Florida State - but there are others. Tennessee was the National Champion in 1998 and they haven't come close since. Florida State is even more pathetic. They were the Champs in 2013 and now they can barely sniff a win.

As bad as Rebel fans feel for our disgusting football team, just imagine how bad it must be for Tennessee and FSU fans. We are at a top level of suck, but we are used to it and it doesn't hurt as bad. We know that no matter who the coach is, who the recruits are or who we play it is almost guaranteed we will lose. But Tennessee and FSU fans have that hope deep in their souls and they have to wait till mid-season to realize they are losers.

I think we're better off.

Warthog,
With due respect, I have to disagree.

Florida State and Tennessee still have significant $$$, are a part of a serious conference, and although their past success has been a very long time ago, they are still nationally relevant, still carry weight, and they could flip the success script with a good hire and a few playmakers.

UNLV is at the bottom of a conference that few care about, we have to go for value coaching hires or hometown discounts, and would need a tremendous amount of luck, work, and elbow grease to elevate to the status of a boise state, which is simply a much more attractive version of us, but still nowhere near getting an invite into the cool kids limo at prom.

Our BBall program could pull it off, but we have more in common with San Francisco and Western Texas national championship success than we do with Tennessee and FSU.

The only hope I have is our last two recruiting classes, our new stadium, our tier 1 status and what is going on at cinci. But our chances are about as good as the shot quigley made in quigley down under, but crazy Cora has to make the shot.

My generation was the last that appreciated UNLVs glory days (born 1980). Even local kids these days have no clue

I would die for Tennessee or FSU’s success

Perhaps I was ineloquent.

Yes these teams have $$, a relevant conference and support etc. But their fans have hope and that is their problem. They actually believe their team has a chance for relevance. That makes it so much harder when the end of the year comes and they are in some crappy irrelevant bowl.

We, on the other hand, have it much easier because we know our team will go nowhere. There is no hope and that gives us the freedom from despair.

Didn’t Tennyson say … “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”?

But I get where you are coming from because of the strong parallel with our basketball.

Sorry this team and staff is not surprising anyone this season. Former Offensive Coach at Oregon and we struggle to generate offense.

I don't think it was Tennyson - I think it was Bill Clinton.

I gotcha. It’s certainly a lot better on the blood pressure and how carefree sundays and mondays were. I think you are like Red, where hope is a dangerous thing. Where hope can drive a man insane. That it doesn’t have a place in this program.

I think Andy was right. Those Italian ladies sang for us in the 90s and taught us that hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things and a good thing never dies.

I’m pretty sure Andy wasn’t a Rebel football fan though. He would have used the 6 feet of rope for a different reason or told the sisters to just finish the job.

It did spook me that every single Oregon fan I knew said they were glad he was gone and that it wasn’t sour grapes. That his play calling lacked imagination but he had sweet Jordans

First time in 11 games tonight I didnt think the play calling was a disaster. It wasn't exactly how I would have done it, but it wasn't as bad as it had been.

Traditionally Cinci was a basketball school and football was an afterthought, in a conference similar to the wac/mwc, at least until they got a b12 invite.
Now they might have a legit chance of being the first g5 to break the final 4.
Got it 👍

I thought he called the Fresno game pretty good.
