Sanchez hits a homerun on SoCal radio show

If I were a prospect and hadn't given UNLV a thought, I certainly would after listening to him. He just sounds like a no BS, tell it like it is, kinda guy. I think by selling Las Vegas, he also removes some of the misconceptions about it.

The more I see of Coach Sanchez, the more I understand why well-known financial backers did not want their names/contributions discussed when Sanchez was hired. When you talk about the money he was supposedly gonna bring in, he's just a high school coach riding coattails of a billionaire to the coaching position.

But when you see what Coach does, and the passion he brings with him, you see that he has the makings of a great head football coach. Sure the money has already started coming in, and certainly a program needs big time $$ if it wants to compete at the highest level. But aside from all that, Tony Sanchez is a great football coach. With a little bit of time, he'll be able to do what many thought (and think) is impossible for UNLV football.

Go Rebs.

You are dead right about the $$$$ and why it has not been brought up. People expected him to stand next to TKM with a big cardboard check. The jury is still out on whether he is a great football coach at this level. Not diminishing what he did at Gorman, but there will be a transition to this level. He took some solid steps in helping himself by hiring an experienced staff. We won't have a verdict on that for 2-3 years, but he has tackled all the other parts of the job and done a fantastic job. He has taken every step imaginable, to improve the image, facilities and bolster community support.

My thinking is Sanchez will acclimate effectively with game experience because he possesses the right natural tools. He's wired with intrinsic characteristics that a coach either has or doesn't have. Everything I've seen and heard so far indicates Sanchez personifies leadership, intelligence and vision. He's a natural leader with much needed charisma. He dominated the high school ranks. He's genuine in his approach, not too prideful to listen and learn, but fiery enough to make the difficult decisions. Players trust him and respond.

If Sanchez fails I don't think it will happen because he's incapable of developing and coaching at this level. I think it will have more to do with the state of the program and the daunting task of resurrecting a program that historically has been wallowing in the stone ages for decades. But something tells me Sanchez will get it done, because he's both a builder and a coach. He's "building" better than anyone we've had since JRob's brief tenure, and time will tell about his coaching, though I imagine a worst case scenario in coaching will still be an upgrade from Hauck.
