Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread Memphis

After the first game, I am clueless how UNLV will do verse Memphis. No doubt this is a must win if Kruger wants to have any chance to save his coaching job.
I think he will be fine, regardless of the outcome of this game (thinking with head, not going by emotion).

But I really don’t have a clue what to expect either. This game serves as a barometer of sorts, the first one really didn’t.

Short term or long term being fine?

I think there’s a chance that unless this season is a disaster, like 500 or worse, he may remain.

Not saying that it’s what SHOULD happen.

What I’m saying is we don’t know what UNLV is thinking big picture. Funds are limited. Football is making money. It’s starting to drive things. Football needs to be fed. Basketball is “surviving” at bare bones minimum. It can continue to survive at bare bones minimum while we feed football more.

It’s essentially flopping football/hoops of the 80’s/90’s.

Again, not saying we should or that’s what UNLV is thinking. I’m saying people should at least consider it as a viable possibility.

Doing that would piss off the remaining 200-300 diehards. But does that really matter in the grand scheme?

In order to progress as a school, it's what needs to happen.

It was a slow process to move from the daily paper to the internet, but here we are. Football needs to catch up with the digital age, so to speak. This is why I see CKK remaining as a viable option. For the money we spend, we get the results we expect.

I do not think there is a chance in hell that he would remain if they dropped off to around 500 ball. Most fans are pissed off when they go 21-13, how do you think fans would react if the team dropped down to around 18-16?

I’d be pissed, you’d be pissed, most on this board would be pissed, half the people that attend games would be pissed.

Really pissed. Demanding for a firing.

I agree with that.

So a large percentage of very low number would be pissed. A number so low that it doesn’t really matter. If we continue treading water as a mediocre program, what is going to happen? Attendance drop? We are at bare bones right now, any reduction in that doesn’t really hurt from where we are.

I’m saying the potential to focus on football as A, B, C and D is there for the first time in school history. If UNLV is serious about potential high line conference affiliations… it may require every single ounce of effort to go into the FB program.

Again, I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do, not saying UNLV is thinking it or even should think it … but trying to look at the potentials with a wider lens.

Exactly, low overhead (his salary) … results are within margins (very low expectations now as compared to previously).

Should he be fired with a 500-600 season? By standards of pre-Covid (as for a time frame, not because of Covid), absolutely. The track record would absolutely warrant a firing.

By standards of very few care about basketball since the C19 years, that expectations have hit rock bottom …. I can see the argument why he shouldn’t be fired with a mediocre year.

With the allowance of “slow growth”, with softie “tolerance” welcomed …. We’ve allowed for a new normal of Rebel hoops. When apathy is the fuel, this is what can happen. And with this, I can see where his current results are “acceptable”.

Hopefully we have a really good season and make the NCAAT and it’s all moot.

I think he can be replaced by a better coach for the same money or even less. Example: Danny Sprinkle was paid $ 185,000 at Montana State the year he left for Utah State. There are at least a dozen young, experienced and winning coaches who would come here for what CKK is getting.

If we have any P4 interest and if we want P4 interest then we need to be achieving conference championships. CKK needs to at least compete for a MWC Championship otherwise get him the hell out of here.

I really like CKK . I wish he was not who he is. Took us to the most successful season for me being a Rebel Fan. 94-Present. That said he does not have that high of a ceiling. IMO. The excitement 4 me is almost gone.

His shooting percentage is better than I expected to see (around 40% FG, 30% 3's) so good for him.

Against St John's: 8/19 overall, 3/10 from 3 (team took about 50 total shots, so he took 40%)
Against Seton Hall: 7/17 overall, 3/10 from 3 (team took about 52 total shots, so he took about 33%)

Well, that’s one of those things that could happen if UNLV decided to tread water while not costing a ton. But if UNLV were to look at it that way … there’d be some local influence against it and the argument of continuing with slow growth AND maintaining continuity would come into play.
