Lady Rebels

I had this game on trying to see how we'd look on the season.
I couldn't get a take since the game is significantly different than men's hoops. To me, less aesthetically appealing.

Who watched this game and how does it compare to other women's teams?

For their first game and starting some new players I thought we were okay. We play Northern Arizona next and they just beat UNM at NM. After that we play Arizona. Those are going to be some tough tests and should really tell us what this team is going to be. Hard to judge after one game.

Surprising player for me was Alexander. A transfer from Eastern Washington. She is better than I anticipated. McKinna Brackens now in her second year seems like she has really matured as a player from last year. She is going to be good. Roland redshirted last year as a freshman with an injury. She needs more time to adjust to the game. How quickly she does that will also determine where we go. It's hard right now to see where we are going after this one game but, the competition is going to step up the next couple of games.

I watched Colorado at Wyoming yesterday. For comparison if Wyoming hadn't had like 20 turnovers, not exaggerating, they could have beat Colorado and Colorado has been to back to back Sweet Sixteens. A sloppy game but, we didn't look as sloppy as that game.

99 percent of women, aren't going to dunk the basketball.
It is a different game than men, as women will shoot the mid-range and make lay-ups.
I, prefer UNLV women's basketball over UNLV men's basketball, because they are well coached and know how to win.
Not, like Kevin Kruger coached team's.

UNLV women's basketball does not get the 4 or 5 star athletes. They, go to P4 teams, unfortunately.
UNLV, looks different this year then they did the last 4 year's. As, they don't feed the post to Desi Rae Young, anymore.
What, I do like about this year's UNLV women's team is that any 5 player's can average double digit games and not rely on one player, like we did last year.
Losing, Alyssa Durazo Frescas (transfered to GCU) and Ashley Scoggins to graduation. Our, 3 point shooting has taken a hit.
Hopefully, they improve on the 21.4 percent 3 point shooting percentage.

Meadow Roland, is going to be a stud for us. She, is going to be a double-double machine.
She, needs to start instead of coming off the bench.

I was thinking also that the past few years a lot of the offense went through Dezi. Now that she's graduated I was thinking during the game who was going to step up and replace her. The answer could be no one. And, that might not be a bad thing as our offense could be more balanced with scoring from multiple sources. As for the 3 point game the person I'm waiting to see is Ellie Guiny (SP). She got on the floor for some minutes but no one passed her the ball as she parked herself out in the corner just waiting for the opportunity. But, we know Kiara can nail them and Kennedy can as well. Not, sure why they kept Kennedy out of the game until the last few minutes. I would definitely like to see Kennedy get a lot more minutes if she is healthy enough.

Nobody, can replace Desi, just like nobody can replace McKinna Hofschild for CSU.
CSU, looked average to me when I saw the game against San Fran. last night.
It, will be a collective contribution in the post between Brackins, Meadow Rolland and Brown.
Brown, said that she would be happy if she scored 0 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. As long as we win.
Alyssa, needs to score more points. I, wonder why her scoring has dramatically decreased from her Sophomore season.

Ellie Guiney will get spot minutes. We, have too many guards in our roster. Especially, shooting guards.
Coach, is working in Kenadee Winfrey in slowly. She, will eventually get more minutes.
I am kind of disappointed in Macie James. She, got 25 minutes in last night and only scored 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
She's been kind of a bust. To be honest.

Was at the NAU game. As a team they look slower than last year. Also, their shooting doesn't seem as good. (21% and 24% from three for their first two games.) Last year teams spent a lot of energy guarding Desi and that left our shooters more open.

It is going to take some time, playing without a dominate player.
They, are still trying to figure out their roles. 3 point shooting, is definitely a concern though.

The things, that I am encouraged are the low turnovers.
Last year, UNLV was the number 2 team in the country with the least amount of turnovers per game 10.4.
This year, it is 7.5 turnovers per game.
Also, UNLV can have any 6 players go off in a game. Thus, harder to guard than 1 or 2 dominant players.

Looking forward to playing at Arizona next game. This, will be a big test, if the Lady Rebels can beat them this Tuesday.

Great rebounding though. If we can deny on defense any second chances that will be great for us. A big bonus on offense as well. Brackens rebounding was great. She just gets to the right spot. Now if we can do that with Arizona that would be sweet.

going to the game Tuesday, be rocking the Dalron Johnson jersey
Haven’t seen DJ in the longest time. I hope he’s doing ok. Heard he was having a rough time in LA a few years back.

He was a really cool kid, really funny. Teammates liked him a lot. Wish his focus and grounding was stronger. You wish that for a lot of players.

i remember trying to watch a crappy streaming service of UNLV when he was playing and he hit some miraculous shot from way beyond the 3 to win it. It was during the infancy of streaming service. IT been 25 years so i may not be 100% correct ,but that is how i remember it.

At Bradley.

Someone at UNLV burned it on DVD for me back then so it was a good copy.

A poster here, can’t recall who, was at the game and (really bad quality on phone, this was probably 2003) captured the last game winning sequence and sent it to me, I uploaded it to the pre-Yahoo merger server and shared it.

Did they miss one FT i don’t recall seeing one?
Yea, that no name freshmen guard from NY for Arizona, killed us.
Didn't, even play 1 minute in the first half and explodes for 19 points in the 2nd half.
There, is nothing to do in Tucson. No, Pro teams just U of A.
Yes, I was watching. Old, as hell people there watching the game.

This team has not shot well this season. Both losses against Az have been very winnable games. Hit a few shots in the 1st Q and the rout starts. Instead a bit of pressing and shots are just a bit off. Didn't handle pressure well and I can see teams using that as a blueprint until it's shown this group can handle it. No real leader yet to get them through the slumps. Not sure one will step up. Desi was that one and it feels like a huge vacuum right now. The leadership will be a different than that and it might take some time to adjust.

Kiara is our leader right now and AB is capable but, last night 4th QTR AB got rattled when we got behind. AB tried to do too much of everything and fouled out. Playing in front of her home town that pressure in the 4th just got to her. Kiara made a good amount of shots but she also missed a lot of short range jumpers. We would have been in a lot better shape had she made those missed jumpers.

Brackens looked better the previous games. She wasn't too bad last night. It just seemed that an aggressive AZ team at times would just grab the ball out of her hands after she made a rebound. She has to hold on to the ball better. Other than that she is still growing and will get better.

Rachi is good and so is Alexander.

We played a good 3 Qtrs. AZ just unloaded on us in the 4th. Full court pressure and a tough defense put us on our heals. Overall, I'm not disappointed with the team. Sucks we lost but, we still have some young girls like Rachi, Brackens, and Meadows who will only benefit from this experience. You can't get better playing crappy teams. We will grow from this. We will see when we get Oklahoma in the house if we've learned and grown.

Those two commits were announced in September. I'll have to look up Swillis to get familiar with her basktball.
Yes, but these 2 made it official and signed today.
Cal and Georgetown, offered Alexis Swillis, as well.
Meadow Roland and Swillis, were teammates in Fresno, CA.
So, was Macie James. There's, your connections, right there.
