AP Poll

All money need to be tied up to Odom's contract. Basketball gets put on the backburner. Save some of course for an indoor practice field, seems like we are close financially.
Sure no one cares, but Kevin has an upper 3rds in conference with bottom third money. And at least through next year, his contract is still being paid by TJ's buyount.
If Odom gets poached after we extend him, we prioritize replacing him with a top tier, P4 level coach with a similar contract. If no bites come out of that? Then try Marion or Scherer or even Shibest (one of the best in the game with a ton of experience) and then MAYBE think about using some of the leftovers on a basketball coach if this season disappoints.

The only true salvation is getting into the Big 12, and we can use the extra revenue on a basketball coach at that time.
I concur with this approach. Offer an extra 2-3 million a year with a 20 million dollar buyout, pay Lindy to lock her up, and let basketball ride...

There just isn't enough money in BB to worry about unless you are winning at the highest level.

But this has always been the case outside of a few extreme's like UCONN and Kentucky.

Revisionist history here, but I wonder if there had been a way at the time a way to divert Mendenhall Center money to a football facility instead, if it would have changed things at all.

Just extend KK, essentially let hoops slide as is with minimal money/support, sink everything you have into football.

It’s one thing when hoops is making money, drawing decent interest. It hasn’t for a decade now.

I don’t like it, don’t have to like it but it’s the smart way moving forward.

Not to be too Harsh, but we shouldn't go crazy with Lindy.
Again it all about the end goal. Women's Bball doesn't create much revenue. If they have been running in the black, then Lindy should get every last bit of revenue that the sport creates.
But beyond that, give to Barry.
We can make good on the others once we are pulling in 30 mil a year guaranteed

Different times. Probably would've helped but until we took a torch to the basketball program by firing Rice, it was paying off for basketball. We should've tried to invest in football at that same time to elevate both. Simpler times but had we'd known the Big 12 was going to raid the Pac 12 we mightve invested money into football so we could've been in that conversation... it just shows hiring a experienced HC to run a program makes a huge difference

Not saying go crazy, but 500k extra a year probably keeps her around and keeps that program running at top of conference. Agree with just pouring money into football though. It's something we should've been doing for years.

No totally. I agree.

Different times.

I'm in the minority that doesn't think it does. While I want us to be top-25 in MBB, I think that Harper, et al, are focusing on the big picture of Football.

Sure, it's nice to have a winning Women's basketball team but Lindy earns in the low $100k range ($125-ish if I remember correctly). While that's nice money, that's not going to create pressure that Barry Odom's contract brings. She's also from LV, so it makes for a nice story.

Kevin earns relatively low for upper G5, so he's sort of a bargain right now. This allows us to spend more on football. Do we want better results? Of course. Can we spend the same and get better results? I'm not so sure. Plus, his feel-good story of being an ex-Rebel makes him more acceptable to give a longer leash.

If we are looking at the big picture, spend a lot on football and basketball is an afterthought. Actually, MBB practice started last week and not one post about it. Nothing. Usually, by the time MBB practice starts, we have moved on from football. Not this season (I know: credit Odom and blame Kevin for this one).
I actually think CKK have a fringe top 25 team this year with DJJ at the helm. Dedan Thomas Jr. will probably the best MWC player this year. We will see.

I think so too it might do the opposite now the football success takes the heat away form the AD to make a change because one of the major sports is now producing.

Let Kevin either fire himself or coach himself into an extension.

Lock up Odom first to at least increase his buyout. Build NIL partnerships predominantly focused on football.

Then worry about basketball.

Go to boosters and say this is the path forward and we need everybody on board. We did it your way before and this is where it got us. Despite having top or near the top facilities in both sports we're about to be in a watered down MWC. Right now it's Football and everything else can wait.

Can you imagine if Findlay gave a crap about football and poured the same energy into uplifting the program?

With all the accolades that we are getting, should be try to keep Marion and Odom at all cost?
Yes.

If for no other reason to ratchet his buyout up to fill your coffers and be able to attract another solid coach. Marion is a different story. Harder to lock up assistants long term because most want to be HCs at some point.

I say this jokingly. Kinda.

We have some boosters with money.

But in comparison to a lot of others schools who have millionaires we have hundredthousandairses.
8 Billionaire families live in Las Vegas and over two dozen $ 500 millionaire families also. We don't have oilfield money but we do have money. We need the hero that can get to them and get support.

Help me understand how they’re a fringe top 24 team. I’d love for that to be the case and to have results like that but I just don’t see it.
Every year, year after year, we kept waiting for UNLV football to get good, so we can have one more year of hope that Kruger can do his job and jump to the next level. No reason to stress, because we all know that if he doesn't meet the goals set by the AD, he will be gone at the end of the year like Arroyo!

CKK had talented teams the whole time he’s been here, and it’s always underwhelming or something else that throws the program for a loop.

This years squad should be in the dance, but be prepared for an underwhelming season. Like 22 wins and a play in game where we get blown out or something.

Then it sounds like a coaching problem. He's got the talent but can't get them to put it together, or motivate, or just can't coach them up.

That's where I take pause when people shout "oh we have fringe top 25 talent"...
Like man, we had that for the past decade. We had that last yr coming in. Known producers, role guys, etc... we don't have that outside DJ and Whaley. we have a bunch of guys who all were average and we hope coaching pulls them together

They all go to private school.
Nicco Fertitta is an assistant coach working with safeties at UNLV! both Lorenzo Fertitta (worth $3.3 billion) and Frank Fertitta III (worth $3.3 billion) live in Las Vegas. Between all their donations they have provided around 15-20 million to UNLV

Adelson family (Miriam) has given millions to the UNLV hotel school - no clue if they still donate anything under the Adelson Foundation. Worth $32.8 billion

Andrew (worth $3.1 billion) & Peggy Cherng (worth $3.1 billion) - Have donated numerous time to UNLV. I know the last one was $5 million for the William F. Harrah College, but that was back in 2020.

Nancy Walton Laurie has given 10's of million to the University of Memphis (I do not think she has given anything to UNLV even while living her for decades) Worth $9.3 billion

Elain Wynn chaired the UNLV foundation for eight year, has donated millions to UNLV, but not sure if she has donated anything recently.

Steve Wynn - Good luck with him. Bad feeling between UNLV and him.

Phil Ruffin - Not sure if he has or has not donated to UNLV.

Looking at who is playing whom next week, UNLV has a great chance to move up on the AP:
Game and likely to win/lose:

#25 Texas A&M playing #5 Missouri Lose
#24 Illinois playing Purdue Win
#23 Indiana playing Northwestern Win
#22 Louisville playing SMU Win - But I think this could be a close game with a good chance to win only loss for SMU was gainst BYU 18-15
#21 Boise State playing Utah State Win
#20 Kansas State playing Colorado Toss Up - Could go either way.
#19 Oklahoma playing #2 Texas - Lose
#18 Utah playing Arizona State - Toss Up - Being at Arizona State, I think they have a decent chance to win a close game
#17 BYU playing Arizona - Win - I think this could be a close game.
#16 Iowa State playing Baylor -Win - I think Iowa State is overrated, but I think Baylor isn't very good.
#15 Clemson playing Florida State Win - unr would have a hard time losing to Florida State.

No matter how bad the loss, no chance any team ranked above this would drop enough to help UNLV.

2-5 loses likely from #15-#25.

When talking about potential jobs openings that scare me..Baylor is one of them. They were really good not so long ago. Aranda is shuffling there. Would not be surprised if let go after this year. That's a place you can win at. Aranda makes double what Odom makes.

Think you got the win losses pretty well picked.

This gotta put the pressure on Kruger right?
Pressure to pack up his office when we miss the tourney again this year. I can’t believe we have to sit through another season of his slow build, uninspired, underproducing, unsupported version of a bball program.

Let’s go Harper, do something for basketball.

The other voter is from Arkansas I think... so they like Barry...

But 2 MWC teams ranked in the AP poll the same week those idiots failed to break us apart is icing on the cake
