I should be ecstatic over this player, but I’m not.

Killjoy.

I hope he develops quickly under Menzies but the reality is he probably won’t.

Welcome to UNLV though, we could really use the help

Welcome to UNLV, where if you don't get to be an all conference player in one year of development, you are bum and need to be exiled!
This is an outstanding post, don't want it to go overlooked.

This next season is a huge year for both football and basketball. Football is expected to be in a bowl game or bust, and basketball is expected to be top 3 in the conference this season or bust. We will see if they both improve or not, I hope so.

If we are going to play the game of hyperbole, then conversely, welcome to UNLV, land of the participation trophies.

You say that, But I really don't see many handing out trophies. I could be wrong. Sure there are posters that are all puppies dogs and roses, but not that many.

It seems to me that you seem to think that anyone isn't completely enraged that we aren't contending RIGHT NOW, that they are also super happy about what is going on. I don't think many people are super happy about things. Sure people are trying to be positive, but everyone is a bit depressed about where we are.

And contrary to what your hyperbole suggested, I didn’t hear anybody asking for players to be exiled. Not even a few suggested it.

My point was hyperbole.

Let us be clear, Trip. Joe is the poster I respect the most, of all the folks I read. He posts more than anyone else, by far. He is knowledgeable , and has strong opinions.

If you are paying attention, you will see tbat I quite often "like" his posts. I concur with his posts much of the time. Because he posts so often, there are also times I disagree with him. Notably the overemphasis on one year's schedule, and the use of hyperbole to attack those who disagree with him.

But, disagreeing on a couple of issues does not adversaries make. I would bet we agree 80% of the time.
I will speak up when we don't, just as I do with others, who may not post as often.

I'm not sure what he feels. He may well have me on ignore, which would be too bad, since I try hard to disagree respectfully. When I have failed that, I I have tried to apologize.

So, no, I am not following him, stalking him, etc. I respect him.

Well, NSU67, I respect you.

That's why I like you, Trip. You can take both sides of something within 5 posts. Well done.

Oh oh, does that make me your nut hugger? Gonna wear me out!

There are posters, and you know it, who think we need an upgrade at every position. They may not be calling for a specific player to be booted, but there are only so many scholarships to go around. It is very much implied, or unless you think our fans believe that we can have 25 scholarship players.

Sure saying that they need to be exiled is taking was a bit of a stretch from what Scrub said, but already saying that a player won't get any better under Menzies is a bit unfair, don't you think?

Yeah, it is definitely unfair. There’s no evidence. Maybe there is some evidence at NMSU, but I’m guessing there’s some evidence of guys not improving either. Then again, I think it’s every bit the responsibility/fault of a player improving on the player as much as the coach. People like to blame/credit the coach for growth, if the players mind isn’t on the same track, they won’t grow as much as you want. If they are a hard worker and focused, they will.

Coaches that are known for development have had failures. Coaches that aren’t known for development have had successes. Two factors to the equation. And with a player having an impact in it, what kind of player you recruit and what type of player a school attracts comes into play.

And there are posters who think we are “fine” with certain players, giving a huge benefit of the doubt even though eyes have said something different. Call it hope or blind faith, whatever you want. Some guys aren’t good and being a freshman or sophomore isn’t the issue. They just aren’t good.

I agree Joe. Players are a big part of the equation.

I do think the coaching staff definitely play a role. Menzies had a good track record at NMSU for taking raw bigs and turning them into good college players.

But you are right, the player needs to accept feedback, and have the humility to change his game when necessary.

Also, every player has a ceiling, and some top out early.

I am optimistic on several players on the roster, not all. I do think that most can develop enough to carve out a niche, to at least be a situational bench player.

Sure they play a role. A huge role.

But NMSU isn’t UNLV. Completely different environment. That plays a role in how a player may respond, too. Far more to do in Vegas; an incredible amount of distractions in Vegas opposed to Las Cruces. A kid in a candy shop isn’t going to go hog wild in an empty room.

Still remember a former player telling me about his official to Wyoming; he couldn’t go there. There was nothing to do. The big deal on his trip was a local bowling alley near a 24 hour Walmart or something like that.

Maybe he would have turned out to be a better basketball player there than here because he had no choice but to be focused because there was nothing else to do.

He is a great story. Check out this video from 2 years ago, training in Africa.

I think these guys are going to work hard and are hungry. Don't really see the entitlement bug getting to our African players
