Contract

Even if he’s a one hit wonder, he deserves a big contract extension for bringing excitement and notoriety to this program. This is unprecedented for us and he’s responsible for it.

I don’t think that he’s only going to have one good season. I think that he’s legit. Just saying that he could have struck gold and not be able to replicate it.

I wonder if Coach Odom would push more for his staff to get raises than himself. Keeping the staff together would be great.

If we take another step forward next season which I think we will, Odom will no longer be linked with good P5 jobs, he will be hunted. It would be prudent to increase wages but also position terms now to make any possible future transition as lucrative as possible for us. I'm already thinking it will come down to us and Boise next season.

Life time contract with a $50 million buyout? Maybe pay him by giving him his own casino hotel!

I think Marion see the writing on the wall with Odom. I think Odom will be gone next year if he makes another MW title game and bowl game. I don’t want that to happen and hope that he stays through the barrage of offers that will surely come. That being said I think Marion will see it as a good opportunity to step in and take the reins. Just my opinion no facts

This may, ultimately, be the job that Marion takes (should Odom be gone next season) but it's not because Marion hasn't put his hat into every other job out there this season, today, and he will again tomorrow.

Along that line, would you hire him as a HC here knowing that he could bolt after 1 or 2 seasons max? This was the hesitation of other employers and why he's here for a second season (as of right this second).

Unless and until we land in a P4 we will likely always be susceptible to the coaching carousel. I’m hoping that a coach, perhaps Odom, sees UNLV as an easier path to the playoffs than coaching a bottom-tier P4 school. Vegas has some inherent recruiting advantages and its facilities are very competitive. It seems we have just about everything in place to maintain a very competitive program. The missing piece, the most difficult piece, is the $$$$ to pay a big-time salary and really give this job some staying power, but there exists possibilities to solve this as well. A good coach with his roots planted in Vegas is a critical part to maintaining a strong program. Really hoping Odom sees these advantages, UNLV secures the $$$$, and he makes a 5-6 year run at making the playoffs.

Don't screw up Rebel football just to get a better bb coach. In the scheme of things, football provides a much more lucrative avenue going forward.
Did I say “let’s screw up Rebel football”? Good lord

I dont understand all the "Marion should step into the role" people... Guys, he wanted to leave after 1 year. Let's say he has a decent year after Odom leaves(bowl game), he's jumping ship to a bigger job.. have we learned nothing about making the right hire? He's been a good OC for us, he will probably be a good HC elsewhere, but I'm not giving the reigns back to a assistant ever again. Not after what Odom as a former HC has shown what competent experience can do with a program like UNLV.

He had built in bonuses for winning league and going to the bowl. I’m sure those were hit.

Other than that, he did was he was paid to do (win) based on the salary they agreed to for this contract. I don’t see the need to raise it based on doing what you’re supposed to do. I guess we are just used to the coaches failing constantly and taking the money anyway (Arroyo, Kruger, Menzies, too many more to mention).

IMO, you raise it primarily to boost the buyout.

You could say all of this about anyone who coaches and has success at UNLV! Whether it’s Marion or someone else they all could move on at anytime. If and this is a big if but if Odom leaves Marion should be in the mix for the next HC if he has not already left, there’s no doubt in my mind and that would be for continuity with guys here and recruits. AP finally got the HC job with the Raiders and that was primarily because the players would have revolted if they hired anyone else and UNLV could be in a similar situation if Odom leaves. A lot of moving parts with this whole thing if it takes place but one thing nobody’s talking about is what if Odom treats UNLV like Sonny Lubbick treated CSU and just stays here? That could happen too!

I don’t see any coach sticking around here long term based on the current climate in college sports. We don’t pay enough and it happens to P4 schools. Washington offered to double DeBoer’s salary to north of 8 million and he still left, the. U of A’s coach left after having an outstanding season. So to answer your question, I don’t think it really matters their longevity if you have good results. Just make it worth it in their buyout clause so we can afford someone when they do leave. Given the scenario you at least have some continuity with some one who has been here recruiting guys to come here.

I would have agreed with this 100% in the past. Obviously money can be the great equalizer but..

With the new 12 team playoff format leading a top end G5 program may be more desirable than a mid level P4 program.

Might be easier to get in with a G5 program vs schools like Iowa State, Indiana, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech etc..

Again money is the great equalizer though.

I agree with the idea that Odom may not "deserve" a raise, but I don't think it would be a bad idea to do it.
The only reason not to other than the money ( which is a pretty big reason) is to commit to a coach that you think you will have to fire down the road and pay the buyout.
Well Odom was a national coach of the year finalist, and surpassed all expectations. We did this with the worst recruiting class (rated) in the conference. Well next season we will have the best recruiting class in the conference. It looks good that we won't fall back down to the doldrums of the conference any time soon.
I think it would be wise to invest in an extension to protect from him being poached with the buyout. Plus he would be slightly more likely to stay with the recognition.
As for Marion? I say pass. We didn't strike gold with Odom by hiring an up and comer who would have 2 years at G5 and FCS as an OC, and has never been a HC at the college level. We did by hiring a guy who had been a HC in the freaking SEC as well as being a successful DC in the same league for several years.
Football being in the black for the first time in decades is huge. It can be a much bigger money sink when it isn't working, but also a much bigger revenue generator. You don't skimp on football, so if Odom were to leave, you use that buyout money to try to get someone just like Odom. It is like flipping houses. It's how Boise State has been able to stay relevant after losing several coaches.

I agree. You extend him with a larger sum buyout and some more money for assistants etc, add in some higher performance incentives, etc. You do that because you know hes going to be out in the next 2 years to a bigger job. You need the money to then go offer another big name coach and staff and the process repeats. I think thats where Boise is going to begin to see their decline, up unitl the last guy, they flipped good coaches for good coaches, then they fired one and got suckered into hiring this last one. I dont want to go that route, I dont think "recruiting" classes are a reason to hire an assistant as recruiting classes are constantly changing and each coach is seemingly doing better than the previous. Maintaining an exciting and winning program on the other hand has a much bigger factor for kids signing and Las Vegas becoming a destination to play rather than a stop.
