CDM Era: Transfer Portal and Recruits Thread

Alex Orji is an elite athlete. No question.

But he is definitely a project as a QB in the BIG10 or MWC.

At the HS level he completed just 50% of his passes.

Has a big arm but struggles with accuracy and touch on throws more than 10 yards down the field.

Was a 3* coming out of HS. So he wasn't exactly viewed as an elite prospect at the QB position.

Orji is a very good pickup. I don’t understand the negativity, he’s a national champion that has seen the biggest stages of College Football and has been a starter for one of the CFB premier program. The pressure that comes with that is immense and he will do well here under CDM and playing vs MW competition.

Absolutely dynamic player and will be competing for the starter position. He has the potential to put up funny numbers against this level of competition.
Agree completely with all of this. How are posters making this something to worry about? Having two quality QBs (from major programs) is important for depth.

I'm not speaking for Rosegreen. But words should have meaning.

'Legacy' seems a bit much.

Impact..Sure..

Legacy...Seems like you need a little more. Like a third year and conference title.
LOL Go ahead and use whatever adjective or term or euphemism for 'legacy' you guys think is appropriate. Footprint, Indelible Mark,Bequeathment, whatever works...I won't be mad.

Unless CBO show that he tries to get those players that transfer out off UNLV to stay, I feel strongly that the money he spend in recruiting those players should be return to UNLV from his salaries.

Forget about the legacy. He maybe violated a contractual or ethical agreements.
From what I've seen college football these days has no ethics. That goes for coaches and players. The NIL and transfer portal has turned amateur, college football upside down and certainly not for the better. The NCAA better step-in soon and come up with some common sense regulations.

Saban wanted him at Alabama but not as a QB. Michigan is one of the few schools that gave him a chance as QB. If we are going to have him as a QB then project might be right. He is definitely a high level athlete that if he wanted he would excel at other positions but, that's not what he wants. Even Prime wanted him to play on the high school team he coached but not as QB and Orji didn't go to that high school for that reason. And of course Prime had his own son as QB so that wasn't ever going to happen.

Didn't UNLV have problems this year with red zone scoring? Maybe Orji is the answer to that problem.

Very true. But he could have done the same at Michigan. I doubt he left Michigan to come to UNLV without believing he'd get much more visibility?

Unless Orji makes some significant gains in his passing efficiency in the offseason. I just don’t see him winning the starting position, but you’d be a fool to not take this guy just based on his athleticism alone. Hopefully Mullen can work him up

He had the same duo at Florida. He absolutely can.

I think he believes Mullen and Dennis are going to be able to make him a better QB. Dennis spent the last 5 years at Ohio State as the QB coach. Dennis has his work cut out for him with our new QB's. If Mullen and Dennis can make these guys better I really believe we are going to draw in a lot of other QB's in the future. We will find out in about 7 months.

I’m somewhat of a passive Michigan fan because my wife and her family are die hards. Orji is a stand up dude, gave a ton of effort to his team, and was loved because of that by the fans. With that being said, his passing game isn’t anywhere close to what Hajj’s was. So my only concern is the why behind the commitment. He’s not going to turn into a passing QB no matter how good Mullen is. I’m just surprised he’s downgrading for UNLV when there’s a chance he’s not the starter. Now if he takes on a similar role that he had at Michigan when JJ McCarthy was the starter then I’m all for it. Makes for some dynamic play calls. It’s just surprising is all for me. And if he’s going to end up being the starter (who knows what Mullens plan is) then I promise you the same frustration we had with the passing game this year will be present next year. I’m curious to see how this all plays out.

He had a couple of starts a few games into the season. Had a win against USC but with only 32 passing yards. He had 86 against Minnesota. That was the peak.
And I couldn’t see he attempted one pass down field over 15 yards. He was really quick to abandon the pocket and started his run. Very happy feet. He made Hajj look like he was locked in concrete.

Unless it's the second coming of Brady, we aren't happy.
Hell, even if we had gotten Brady for a 5 year of eligibility people would be mad as he's barely a 60% completion rate, short of a 2:1 TD:INT ratio, never more than 2500 yards in a full season. Sure, he was a winner at a good program but he was clearly a game manager who rode very good defenses and running game to his success. I'd rather have Friel starting, he looked good against 3rd stringers in mop up duty last year /s

He was a regular in at QB, but with the signing of the Fresno State QB as backup, and Warren replacing Orji as the #1 QB, I think he saw a better shot at being the starter at UNLV instead of either the 2nd or 3rd string backup at Michigan.

I hope we see some more OL and DL signings coming soon, the lines are the key to a team like ours being great at home or on the road!

If you look at our LB signings a lot of them played DL. We do need one more though IMO. OL is the one area of need being what we lost I think we signed two?
You are right we have 2 or 3 new OL guys.

And I do think a few of these guys might be Doyle type guys who will rush the passer but I’m talking about getting a few guys who are 6’3” 295+ to not only clog the middle on runs but compress the pocket in the face of the QB on passing downs.

I have said it a few times now, we need to be like Boise State’s DL and they don’t have to be SEC transfers either!

3-3-5 under Arnett when he was at SDSU utilized linger more athletic type DL guys.

Wanted quicker more explosive guys to attack gaps vs Casey Hampton type NT that stood their ground and occupied blockers.
