Assuming Hawaii gets done..Then what?

Again if the PAC media deal comes in at 8 mil or less would it make any sense to pay a 17 million dollar exit fee. When in all likelihood we end up there in 5 years. You said that yourself.

It would take that long just to pay it off, (unless a booster stepped up).

When the media deal numbers finally get released then a fair assessment can be made.

PAC media deal greater than 9 million per, UNLV made a poor choice. Less than 9 maybe not.

But UNLV joining the PAC really hurts the MW deal, and really helps the PAC.

If UNLV left the MW, that league would be in a rough spot.

Add UNLV to the PAC offering and I think it would help them get to that 12 million number for two reasons

1. the MW would be worth less
2. the PAC would be worth more.

It hurts the competition for the MW v. PAC when going to Media Partners.

If we made the leap, and killed the MW off IT WOULD have been worth it.

There was no need to sit back.

UNLV really doesn't impact the PAC deal as much as you would think.

Example (hypothetical) Pac deal currently sits at 10 million per school. For that deal to move a million dollars UNLV on their own would gave to be worth nearly 18 million to a media partner on its own. We are not.

With or without UNLV the PAC deal won't move exponentially. It would however do more harm to MWC deal.

UNLV on its own like valued around 6 to maybe 8 mil.

The numbers that get floated for each respective conference is 4-5 million for the new MW. Inflation has helps keep the number a little higher than it used to be, but losing the schools we lost really hurts.

For the new PAC the number that's floated around is 10 million dollars.

If those are the numbers, its a bad choice to stay taking into account:
1. worse travel costs in the new MW
2. less NCAA tournament revenue in the new MW
3. worse matchups, harder to sell tickets, in the new MW.

Not to mention worse access to the NCAAT and the CFP in the new conference.
Remember, that number floating around was 15-18 for the new pac months ago before they added Gonzaga. Its shifted quite a bit. Until they lock up another school, it isn’t even a sanctioned conference yet.
I deserve criticism for how I handled the Pasnter Hire.

I can be wrong, and my reaction to the pasnter hire wasn't fair to him

Issue is, we committed to something without knowing how it was going to play out.

There is no "evaluate after we have all the numbers and then make our decision" thing here.

We made our choice.

If we had made the right choice it woulda been a leap of faith, but it also woulda been betting on our future and not this risk adverse garbage.

If we weren't signed into an irrevocable contract with a worse conference then maybe you can "wait and see"
Did the Pac allow time for evaluation? I wouldn’t assume so. They didn’t for the AAC schools.

They already hurt the MWC.

They could have killed it.

They didn't.

The PAC did not have a media valuation when they pitched to UNLV. They had an estimate from a consultant Navigate.

Go read the interviews from the AAC ADs. Tell me after reading those you are 100% comfortable jumping in bed with the PAC. Conference stability and viability were one of their biggest concerns.

Again PAC gets media deal 10 million plus..Pitchforks and torches.

If it comes in at 8 then UNLV was probably correct in not jumping. The investment of 17 million would takes years to recoup.

I'll ask for the 100th time do you know if UNLV actually could afford the exit fees. Kind if an important tidbit don't you think?

Were not in the AAC, I don't really care about their evaluations of the situation.

I know I don't want to be tied to the new MW.

Of course they had an estimate, that's exactly what the new MW had as well. There was no difference, both conferences didn't have secured media deals. Im comfortable investing into unlv sports.

Also everyone expects those buyout fees to come down.

Ill ask fo the 100th time, if UNLV couldn't afford the exit fees, the question that has to be asked of Erick Harper:

We know UNLV didn't have the cash on hand to pay for the Fertita football conference, or to pay Dan Mullen.

Its completely fine that they didn't, that's not how investment works.

They can afford it if they decide to make the financial investment, and they certainly can if Fresno state can.

If they come to us and say they cant they deserve to be fired.

Because a booster stepped up to help with Mullen.

Next question.

And yes the reasons the AAC didn't join do in fact matter. If a group of ADs say they have concerns over the stability of the PAC you absolutely take that into consideration.

Yes there is a difference. The MWC actually has a current media partner who they are likely in contact with.

The PAC schools do not have a media partner outside of a few OSU/WSU games on the CW where they are likely to end up.

Gloria is likely receiving feedback from current media partner where as the PAC has been hunting media partners down.

So there is a difference.

Navigate is a consultant who gave an estimate, not a media partner who gave a true valuation. Those are entirely separate things.

Nobody wants to be in a depleted MWC. But 'investing' 17 million into something and you don't know what your returns are going to be is not the no brainer decision you like to paint it.

PAC media deal comes in over 10 mil per school, sure march on down to UNLV I'll join you.

If it comes in under it may have been the right move fiscally for UNLV to stay put.

This isn't a hard concept to grasp.

Wait and see how it plays out vs all the rage tweeting and pearl clutching in advance. Might save you having to indulge in crow in the future.

The reason I say the AAC stuff doesn't matter is due to geography. Were not on the other side of the country like they are .

We're not in the AAC, which already has a 7 million dollar media deal; we're in a depleted bad conference that won't have an awesome media deal.

If we go, it is a no brainer because of what the new MW becomes. Air Force had an open invitation to the AAC with the other service academies.

This isn't difficult to grasp because it is a no-brainer because of what us leaving the MW does to that conference.

The wait-and-see crap, instead of proactively investing in your programs, kills us.

There are two scenarios where I will eat crow

1. If UNLV is in the big 12 by 2031
2. If the media partners force the two conferences to merge.

Thats it.

My guy the stability of the PAC was a concern of the AAC ADs on top of money and travel. It was a separate issue. Therefore it does in fact matter. If it was just travel or just money sure. But multiple ADs had reservations about the PAC stability. You don't ignore that completely.

Nobody is arguing the PAC deal won't be better. The question is how much and would spending 17 million in exit fees be fiscally responsible.

UNLV did proactively invest by hiring Dan Mullen.

Ok so if UNLV makes the CFP over the next 5 years or actually gets to the dance while in the MWC you're still going to be pouting ?

Also we all expect the exit/poaching fees to be brought down, the PAC offered to pay 3 million

So 17 million dollars is overstating the cost

Semantics but fine 14 million.
No it would be something closer to 11 million.

Smart number that I’ve seen estimate that it could be settled down to 13 million per school, instead of 18.

That’d make it around 10 million for unlv to leave.

That’s not semantics.

I’m admit, this topic has driven me crazy, I genuinely think that the school has been using faulty, logic, and employing, a real lack of belief in our athletic program.

Had a long conversation with Doug Knuth who was previously the athletic director at Reno, it is now the athletic Director at Southern Utah University, and he told me his very informed opinions about the whole topic several months ago, since then I felt like the school has been holding a gun up to its own head

I’m not the only one in the valley that feels that way, but there are literally zero people in Las Vegas media that seemed to have any desire to call the school out on this.

I definitely haven’t always handled it very well, and I imagine some of my potter takes can come back to buy me no doubt.

13 million per school in the PAC? For media deal?

If it's that I'll join your march on UNLV. If it's less than 10 it was a tougher call than you are making it out to be.

No no,

I’m talking about the exit/poachint fees.

What it would cost to leave the MW

Hawaii and Reno should jump. Makes no sense to be in the MWC.

Even though we disagree, I appreciate your perspective. That being said, hiring Mullen doesn’t quite signal that the program has a lack of belief in itself. We could have very well ended up with a Hauck 2.0 or any number of discount hires.

Mullen is the first coach we’ve hired since Robinson that didn’t seem like the path of least resistance hire. I don’t know much about Pastner, but hopefully he can pump some life into the program.

Exciting can't wait to see that Utah Valley game. Finally get football going and now we are stuck in this dog shit of a conference.
I'm not happy to hear any talk of expansion until we see some money. Gloria made us promises and before we see a dime they are looking at expanding. This better just be a rumor or some bullshit because that is unacceptable. Why the **** did we sign that GOR.

Because it gave us a financial advantage over every other institution in the MWC.. You can see what 1.5 million extra does for Boise. Were talking more than that per season that was promised. Its also very reasonable to assume that should fees be settled in a way that the payouts promised do not align with the MOU that was originally agreed to for us to stay, even with a GOR signed, we could walk away. I think we will know the exit/poaching fee amounts before either conference announces their TV deal.

It's funny to me when people bring up the GOR and contracts. (Not you, I agree with your take)

Somehow PAC can litigate a contract they signed and claim duress, everything is going to get negotiated down and the MWC is screwed, yet the MWC GOR with UNLV is ironclad and UNLV is screwed and couldn't do the same thing the PAC is doing.

You’re completely right.

Hiring Mullen, and really everything we’ve done with football over the last 5 years or so has been awesome belief in the school.

I just felt like we had to make one more major commitment of belief. Having Mullen playing UtEP feels like keepin a rolls Royce in a trailer park.

I appreciate your perspective.

I dont know if Dan is going to be around long enough to play UTEP....
He's going to be right back into the conversation the next SEC job that opens at end of next year- especially if a job like Oklahoma opens.

GOR and what the Pac signed regards the poaching are two different things. You can call them the same all day long but they aren't. ACC is stuck in a place where they don't want to be because the GOR. Sure they can leave at anytime but they wont' see a dime from that media contract if they do. Same thing for us. We can easily say the same thing but it's going to cost us. If we leave for the PAC now we won't get a dime until after 2032. That is a big difference from being in a poaching contract and is currently under mediation. I know you know that.

Under the GOR they own our media rights.

If we left for the pac, we the pac couldn’t broadcast our games because the MW would own the right to distribute them.

Yeah I don't know why we signed it unless we are able to exit if the fees promised to us don't come to fruition. But if we can't then it was a horribly dumb decision.

I'll ask again.

Why is the PAC scheduling / poaching fees, exit fees so much up for debate or will be negotiated down but somehow the contract UNLV signed is binding and iron clad and seals our fate.

UNLV could claim duress. They only had 24 hours to decide. UNLV could say they were mislead by the MWC and had no other option but to sign.

I mean the PAC is claiming duress...

Which is nonsense since they could have approached CUSA for a scheduling agreement. And if their argument is regionalism, not sure that holds any water since they attempted to poach schools from the AAC.

There's always loopholes.

None of us are lawyers that I know of except @reagan21 but he's useless since he only works on 18th century agrarian law, which isn't helpful n this scenario.

Contract is a contract is a contract.

The agreements that were signed are different. The excuses to break them could be similiar. If you're buying the PAC's duress defense. UNLV could say they were mislead by the MWC initially. Their opportunity to join the PAC was lost and they had no other option but to sign the GOR.

Yep sounds like total bs I know. But so does the PACs duress nonsense when they could just have easily gone into a scheduling agreement with CUSA. It would have been far cheaper for them I am sure.

I actually agree with you.

It all seems moot to me because UNLV intends to be bound by this contract and I don't see them having any appetite on spending money in court.

Im talking about the GOR that was signed in December, a couple of months later. There are two distinct documents, if you were claiming distress on the MOU, I could get it, but they had months after the MOU when they signed the GOR in december.

Ill be graduating from law school this month at UNLV, but I'm not a contract experts. Hoping to become one though.
