We're a good team that can and will get better.
We are a
really good team. That game was played at March Madness-level intensity, and much like the UNI game, it's one we should have won. I'm lying here at 4 AM, unable to sleep, thinking about the lost opportunities that occurred this week. Once again, our guard-play did us in. There were definitely some better signs to the backcourt decision making, with one glaring exception at the end of regulation.
Jesus JoJo! What are you thinking in that spot? I know MM will never throw his kid under the bus, but that kind of selfish play, from the guys who are supposed to be the floor generals, is inexcusable. Last season it was understandable since there were very few options when in need of a final shot, but Mooring needs to understand how good his new teammates are.
But beyond that shot, the backcourt offense was very weak. They were 0-5 from beyond the arc, and 2-12 from the field. At least they didn’t jack-up 29 shots, like last time. And they dished out 13 dimes to 6 turnovers, which is not too bad. Unfortunately, our bigs had 9 errors, which contributed to our 18 still-too-many TO’s. I know that playing at the velocity that they are exhibiting, and that we all want to see, is bound to result in some miscues. However 38, in two heartbreaking losses, is too many to expect to result in wins against good teams.
One more time, we must lick our wounds, and learn from our mistakes. The announcers were shocked to see our team, and note that the Rebels were chosen to finish in the middle of the pack in the Mountain West. And they should be. We have a legitimate shot to win in our league.
We have a quick turnaround with Oral Roberts visiting the Mack on Tuesday. But they're currently 2-7, so they shouldn't present much of a problem. Next Saturday we host the Illini. They, like us, opened at 6-0, but dropped their last two games. Even going as far as falling in overtime on Friday to Northwestern. I like our chances in both upcoming games.
But there are some good teams in the MW. Regrettably 8-0 UNR would be one. I watched Colorado State take down previously undefeated Colorado today. Boise state is 7-1 with a win at Oregon. Wyoming was briefly ranked, with a win at Oregon State. They now join a quartet at 6-2, which consists of Fresno St , SDSU and ourselves.
I know the league is considered weak, but there will be quite a few tough games. Especially when we are playing in their venues. Let’s hope that these rather painful experiences,
steel us for what lies ahead.
Go Rebels!
