I'm not as tuned in to the football recruiting as many of you guys and gals. Just curious if we landed/lost any surprise recruits on signing day?

Not really. Pretty much went to plan.

Yes, pretty much went as expected. All you really need to know:

  • Recruiting class ranked 8th in MWC, but addressed most of the needs, particularly on defense. Coaching staff seems pleased, hopefully they got some sleepers that will really contribute.
  • The flashiest recruiting target that a lot of people (including me) thought we had a shot at - WR John Jackson - instead chose USC. This shouldn't have been any sort of surprise, since his father was a star for USC (and is now a USC broadcaster) and his grandfather coached at USC, and because USC is USC.
  • There are three more spots that could be filled in this class. Right now the Rebs are waiting on a local OL and I believe a California LB/DB to take the ACT and get past admissions. Also, an OL from Phoenix area is waiting to decide.
  • The construction started on the new practice facility & stadium is great to have to show recruits, but this class is lower ranked than the 2016 UNLV recruiting class so it's hard to conclude that it's making a difference yet.
  • Incoming class includes two solid QBs: a local kid who will be the QB of the future, and a JC sophomore-to-be that should be depth/competition for Armani Rogers the next three seasons.

Ummm we were 4th in the MWC. The only surprise for me was that Heimuli signed. I was almost positive he was going to sign elsewhere.

I usually go by 247Sports ranking:

But it is interesting how different the Rivals ranking is, and I believe the difference is mostly due to Rivals including all 22 UNLV commits but missing commits from four other schools, while 247Sports is missing four from UNLV:

According to 247Sports, UNLV had the fewest signees at 18. We know that number is incorrect, and that more recruits generally means a higher ranking. Also, they have Trigg-Wright and Zeon listed as no-star recruits. So, we have two factors right there that would definitely skew us lower in their rankings.

I didn't bother looking at Rivals. They have such a hard time maintaining current information that they probably haven't gotten beyond verbal commits for 2016 yet.

RIVALS' formula cuts off the class with the 20 highest commits for its calculation. They think it makes more sense in how to deal with over signing vs. under signing teams. It's not perfect but I see where they are coming from.

The 247 Composite ranks according to the average rank reached between the main recruiting services.
