OK I feel I "little better" if this is true.

Is there something in the works with the Big 12? I doubt it but, hey a guy can dream right? Having the option without penalty is pretty huge though.

After calming down and thinking about it for a minute though…

Jumping to the PAC was likely going to cost at least $18 million. Maybe it was just the $18 mil or maybe there was some other bs shannanigans the PAC and the rest of those traitorous CU**S were trying to pull like reduced revenue share or whatever.

Regardless, UNLV saves the $18 mil and picks up an additional $20 million or more to stay in a conference, that isn’t as good to be sure (maybe by a decent amount), but in all reality isn’t as far behind as people may think.

The PAC is still a G5 and in any given season, depending on who the national Cinderella turns out to be, could easily end up as a footnote during any given season.

Once a few of them sh*t the bed in the non-con and it drags their SOS into the tank it won’t matter what the rest do.

And UNLV just made $35-40 million to be in essentially the same boat.
It isn't the same boat though.
UNLV would have been thr PACs 7th best market. It is the MW's top market.
The annual revenue isn't going to be that close. It can't be,
They also a good chunk of of better basketball schools.
Oh yeah SDSU, BSU, and Frenso have been the best football schools too in the past decade.
The factor that no one talks about is UNLV in the PAC really helps the PAC profile. The PAC becomes pretty legit at that point. They are really struggling without us, but they will be OK.

And it was never going to cost UNLV 18 million.

But.

Going to the PAC is more or less committing to G5 for an extended period of time with a much lower ceiling financially and athletically. It is trading extra cash now for being truly upgraded in the future.

These next 2 seasons are huge. Because after that it is going to be much harder to make a splash. No one moves from a lower G5 to a P4. No one.

Depending on who the MW can land, then maybe it won't be a lower G5, but is sure as sh!t is now.

UNLV Stays Put MWC

Utah State left because they have bad leadership and their football program is a disaster. The amount of coaches that school has run through over the years is astonishing. It’s not surprising they lept at a deal where they pay their way in because they want positive coverage admist their scandals.

The PAC12 was rejected by 7 schools this week, if you count Hawaii. PAC has more problems because their standards and used car salesman tactics aren’t working on anyone. Their proposed tv deal is probably fiction and doesn’t move the needle for any AAC team to pay an exit fee and get paid a few dollars more…for what? Joining a version of the MW? Nah. Why would unlv want to pay an exit fee and join a broke conference with no tv deal?

Semantics I know but Hawaii didn't turn the PAC down. PAC didn't invite them after meeting with them.

UNLV Stays Put MWC

Based on where we are at, that is probably the best case scenario. Would get us into the central time zone, building the media value up somewhat. Unfortunately, there just aren’t many good options.

The good thing (if you can call it that) about there not being great options available.

PAC is in the same boat.

And nobody can tell me that there isn't some sniping in those PAC meetings now. This is not where they envisioned this going.

I really thought initially the PAC had handshake agreements with Memphis and Co. And it was a done deal. I figured no way they would be this dumb and just assume they could get whoever they wanted.

However.

Until proven otherwise, I now think Memphis and Company played the PAC to get a better deal out of the AAC.

The initial 4 SDSU/BOISE/CSU/FRESNO can't be happy with where this is at right now. It's not what was promised.

HUGE NEWS!

NIU and Toledo have had some good teams. Actually think it could be a win/win. We (Current MW) gets 2 solid football only schools and we get into the fertile recruiting areas of Chicago and Ohio. Plus it could boost the media deal at least enough for them to be cost neutral from a payout perspective. They, of course, get into a better conference for football. Texas St would be the best full member school being talked about in my opinion. Still would need 1 more full member, but would probably take 2 (or a 4th football only school) to get to 12. Don’t really have any strong feelings on who would be best out of the 3 you mentioned, though another football only MAC school like Miami (OH) could be intriguing.

Yeah..I'm not enamored with prospect of NMSU and UTEP but they make sense on a few levels.

This will sound back handed but. There just aren't a lot of other options.

Geographic sense.

We might need them to survive.
And who's to say with a little more media money they couldn't start improving some things. They would also be saving a little in overall travel expenses I think. (Could be wrong I didn't bust out a map and ruler to calculate)

Side note.

Their fan base on Twitter is almost in unison saying please God let this happen. Followed by 'But we are UTEP and nothing good happens to us.' 🤣

Dudes got 10k followers. Not sure how reliable the info is but.

If NIU and Toledo reached out 1st maybe this has legs.

I've been pretty down about not joining PAC. But Toledo and NIU have been solid programs.

If Gloria can add Texas State and possibly a combination (or all) of SAC State, UTEP and NMSU I'll feel better about the viability of the MWC..

No Utep and NMSU aren't great but regionality makes sense.

And they get us to the minimum

TV Deal

Ok, so hear me out...
Gloria targets 2 football only Schools for expanded regional coverage with NIU and Toledo, adds 1 Texas school for all sports...
That's 10 football and 8 basketball programs...
So you swing for the fences and add Gonzaga and St. Mary's and now you balance 10 and 10...
I mean, that's one hell of a job as a commissioner if she can swing that

Don't we need 2 for all sports since Hawaii is football only?

HUGE NEWS!

If we did get a P4 out that means the MW is pretty sure it isn't coming.

Maybe this is my ever optimist...

But if it was between saving your conference or not I think you do it.

If UNLV left AFA was very likely bolting to AAC.

Down to four the best option at that point is probably look to merge with CUSA.

Not saying BIG12 happens. I still think it's unlikely, but UNLV had that provision put in place. And they were smart to do so. I don't think anybody else did. (If they did I haven't seen it)..

UNLV Stays Put MWC

The only way the PAC becomes viable is if the acc implodes sooner than later and Cal and Stanford come crawling back, but I doubt they don’t find a home elsewhere before that.
The problem for the PAC is the ACC implosion isn’t imminent, it’s not happening anytime soon. Hence the rushed offers and lowballing AAC members. The other problem is the geography of the PAC is extremely regional. Oregon Stafe, WAZZU, Boise, Colorado, Utah State. Fresno and San Diego are on an island.

The best of the rest scenario never materialized, and a lot of schools are taking stock and looking at the situation, thinking to themselves…wait a minute, this actually makes no sense for us. If the PAC had a large war chest as they claimed, we wouldn’t be seeing them have issues or be turned down by 6-7 schools.

I think people also are kind of sleeping on the no exit fee. If we're decent and the big 12 wants to expand west they can either take a PAC-7 team that will cost them 30-40mil (if what I saw was correct) or they can take us for free. Couple that with not spending money on an exit fee now and we set ourselves up as best we could with the situation that was presented to us imo.

OK I feel I "little better" if this is true.

I missed the part about leaving for an autonomous Power 4 conference. A nice add and the only good thing about the Memorandum. Still lousy conference with no real reason for Idaho or other Summit league powers to spend money to go to a soon defunct MWC. I just don't see with the economic conditions at present a major network paying for the MWC anything but ESPN3 money.
The next TV deal negotiations are already under way. Expected to be at least what they are getting now. At the end of the day, all of these networks need content to fill up their schedules and nothing gets more viewers than football. Even MW games.

TV Deal

They average less than 10000 per game. No one goes west out of Chicago to watch that team. Toledo is even worse. 7000 per game. Someone is smoking crack if they think Ohio and Illinois give a darn about MWC football. BIG runs the Midwest and any other teams are just considered cannon fodder for basketball and football pre league games.
All that matters is what CBS thinks, obviously they are involved with the conference expansion talks and want programming slots for Pacific, Central, and Hawaiian time zones. The PAC has gone regional, the exact opposite of their intention.

UNLV Stays Put MWC

There is no tv revenue stream. The league is dissolved with Utah State leaving. UNLV will be a lost entity in the world of pro athletics here in Vegas. No one will go to see the left over conference and no major tv network will pay to have UNLV on every week in basketball with Kruger as head coach. Odom is gone as this power conference dream is as solid as the paper it is written on. Worthless leadership leads to academics and former Arizona Pac12 administrator with dreams of grandeur which will be met with the steam roller of no money, no attendance, no NIL, no NCAA basketball shares etc.
