OT: Tom Herman

Herman was the hottest name when Texas hired him a few years back after going 22-4 at Houston in 2 seasons. He won at Texas but not enough. FAU is tough they lose a lot more than they win over the years and turn over their HC every couple of years. Lane Kiffin did win there 2 or his 3 years. Herman didn’t even make it through 2 seasons, I’m not sure exactly what they were expecting of him but he took over for Willie Taggert who was an absolute dumpster fire at Oregon and Florida State so after 3 seasons at FAU I doubt he left them in a good spot when Herman took over.

I would still have liked Fresno State to stay in the MWC more than any of the other teams that are leaving.
I dont disagree. I think they are fun to have and add value. IMO in terms of what they bring from an eyes, competition, and perception, they are behind BSU and SDSU. But I'd definitely prefer them be with us whether it's MWC or elsewhere than not. I enjoy the Fresno games every year and have since they joined the MWC.

Line ‘em up: Predictions and Game Thread SDSU

I don't think the casual fan knows that we need CSU to lose or the importance of it. We'll get the same for UNR regardless if CSU loses on Friday or not.

My plan is to go to the UNR game and either take +4 or +10 depending if my sister and her family come down from Utah for Thanksgiving.
The casual fans showed up in large numbers verse BSU because they understood the importance of that game in a national level. If CSU loses, they will understand that winning that game would put UNLV into the MWC championship game verse BSU.

UNLV Top 25 Ranking?

So (hypothetically) if the #14 BYU team wins the Big XII they're a top 4 seed and get a bye. It doesn't matter that they're #14. Conf Champ gets a top 4 seed.
As long as they are the #4 ranked conference champion. If BSU finishes the season ranked higher than the Big12 champion, then they would get one of the top 4 seeds which is possible between them or Army if they both win out. From what I have been reading, Army would possibly pass BSU in their ranking if they can beat Notre Dame, and then beat Tulane, but who knows if a ranked UNLV gets to the conference championship and BSU beats UNLV? On the other side, it is very unlikely that if UNLV wins the MWC championship that they will be ranked high enough to get one of the top 4 seeds.

Yeah I saw their run game is a disaster. Mentioned in the FSU vs CSU thread, boy are those stats awkward.

Conference title contention aside, they don't get to good bowl games. That's not who they are. Here is their entire bowl appears history (not years or opponents, just games) going back to 2000 from oldest to most recent:

Silicon Valley Football Classic
Silicon Valley Football Classic
Silicon Valley Football Classic
Silicon Valley Football Classic
MPC Computers Bowl
Liberty Bowl
Humanitarian Bowl
New Mexico Bowl
New Mexico Bowl
Humanitarian Bowl
Hawaiʻi Bowl
Las Vegas Bowl
Hawaiʻi Bowl
Hawaiʻi Bowl
Las Vegas Bowl
New Mexico Bowl
LA Bowl
New Mexico Bowl

According to Wikipedia, that Liberty Bowl (2005) was supposed to be MWC conference champ TCU, but TCU picked the Houston Bowl instead. Tulsa, C-USA champ, played Fresno (who finished 4th in the WAC, and closed the year 0-4 in their last 4).

MPC Computers Bowl is the same game as the Humanitarian Bowl is the same game as the Idaho Potato Bowl. It's the one in Boise.

Silicon Valley Football Classic was a bowl game that last 5 years and was supposed to be Pac 10 vs WAC... a Pac 10 team appeared exactly once. Fresno played in 4 of the 5 SVFC games.

The others are Hawaii, New Mexico, LV, and LA. The LV bowl is lost of course, but the other 3 are still MWC tie-ins. Obviously you see my point.

They aren't one of those who hunted for the Poinsettia Bowl, the Armed Forces Bowl, Liberty Bowl (when it is at-large, unlike that year), etc. They get tie-in games.

Ya know what my digging has got me thinking? We (MWC community, CFB in general) talk about Fresno like they have some elite FB history. They have a good history, I'm not disputing that. They have regularly been above .500 and appeared in bowl games. I'd love to have Fresno State's history in football. But they aren't some historic program averaging 10+ wins a year like their fan base would have you think. The one time they had a chance late in the year to play a meaningful blow game they blew it to SJSU and David Fales and then got blasted in the LV bowl by USC, that was like 10 years ago. 8 times they have over 10 wins, 5 of which in the 80s (the other 3 in the 2010s).

Fresno is a good program, but man they had me fooled for being elite for a long time. Give it to them though, they take pride in their program from an administration and fan standpoint. Good on them. But also, Fresno sucks.

Have fun continuing to finish 4th in the new Pac.

That's fair.

I'm just not sure how fired up they are to get to the John Deere Weed Whacker Bowl when they're use to contending for conference titles. That effort vs AFA was...Pretty bad defensively.. And offensive they rushed for. -5 yards....

I don't think they've quit on Skip or the season. I just wish they had more to play for this week.

UNLV Top 25 Ranking?

I thought the P4 champions are auto top 4 bids regardless where the G5 is ranked. That's why (until Saturday) BYU was a 4 seed in the CFP even though they were 6th in the rankings.
According to ESPN they said it is the 4 highest rated conference champions and everyone assumed it would be the P4. But that it is actually the 4 highest rated and that right now BSU is rated higher than anyone in the B12. BYU was 4th as they were rated ahead of BSU at the time and now that they lost Colorado is the highest rated out of the Big 12, but behind BSU, moving BSU into the top 4. Maybe he is wrong but that is what they were saying on ESPN radio this morning.

If it does happen that way I bet they change that rule lickety split if Boise gets a bye over the Big 12? LOL!

BOTTOM FEEDER Utah st.destroying Hawaii!

I don't know if I buy in to the fact that they wouldn't be motived by being bowl eligible, but not conference title game contenders. How many seniors on that team are there? You've got guys who will never play again. You've got an interim head coach and staff who would rather look for their next job with comfort of not failing at a top 3-4 program in a conference where everyone outside the top 2-3 is pretty meh.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think motivation is a critical factor. I think it might have been 2.5 weeks ago when they were 5-3 and felt like it was obvious theyd be bowling. Now with the necessity to win, I could see that focus coming back.

That's fair.
