Portal Offers

I was thinking to myself right now, can you imagine how crazy Rebel Twitter would be if Maiava left after the whole fiasco of allegedly transferring and then pics being posted and every UNLV media member saying he wasnt transferring and how people were making stuff up.

My biggest question is; why didnt he come out and say it himself?

Maybe just maybe, Maiava like UNLV for real? After some emotional loss vs SJSU and Boise he acted differently?

I am not a big fan of the way Maiava acts. When he was crying on the bench after turning the ball over. He has a lot of growing up to do. I have no problem with the new QB'S we are recruiting. We need competition at QB.

Let's talk about QB differences. Maiava is a Pro Style QB. Right? Ok. UNLV is recruiting a dual threat QB. One of them throws a side arm throw. The ball is flat and get there fast and he can run. At this level, is that something we want to see if it works? That is a playground QB. Most definitely not a D1 QB.

So he never did say he was going to the portal? … that was all rumors/inside info?

Was that his emotion of wanting it that bad - and realizing he let the team down?…. is that bad?.. I would want that every day from a freshman! The game was over at that point, which he realized… that’s not how he reacted in the first or even the 2nd turnover. He was fighting the whole time.

I fully agree with more competition - that should never change!

Im in the camp that Maiava can grow into being an extremely productive QB! If he’s supported and wanted by HC and OC… if he is looking elsewhere, that’s obviously not what he’s feeling, which is confusing to me... Given how that looks with local recruits.

Or you just throw names in the wind and hope

Same reason why when linkedin recruiters contact you and you ask what they're offering you don't tell your boss till you're ready to get a counter or leave...
Honestly maybe he does love UNLV, maybe something crazy happened when the rumor got out there by mistake and some school calls with a ridiculous offer, or someone on staff texts or calls you demanding to know what's going on or doesn't believe your answer, maybe some teammates here and trash you in text... who knowd

I completely get that analogy, but this man took a picture which was then posted. Or was that a picture taken sometime ago and posted to do damage control lol. Idk. Just a conspiracy.

I need someone who is good with computers and stuff like that to find out when that picture was taken. Timestamps and all.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of tears during gameplay.

not a fan of constant sulking on the bench during game play either … (Cwood at Kansas).

That stuff tends to lose me a bit …

He can be on campus and be in the portal. It’s not like once you decide to put your name in you have 3 minutes to pack your shit and go. That photo very well could have been taken after him telling someone he was entering. I doubt the unlv pullover is any inclination either way

No, for sure i understand the process of it. Im just wondering if that picture was taken before for whatever reason, and it was posted to make it seem like he was staying for sure/damage control.

I just saw a player from South Carolina hop in the portal and hes getting haircuts in the football team's facility. Thats crazy to me. if youre in the portal, no way id let you come back and use the amenities.

Or play in bowl games with the gifts they give you or eat free food on campus, etc... seems like entering the portal is more like going to a networking event where you expect to get people to reach out to you about job opportunities but your still representing your company on their dime...

Just because you go in the portal doesn’t necessarily mean you’re leaving the program. You can still go back, but the program doesn’t have to take you back either. I assume SC is going to try and get the player back, hence the use of barbershop etc.

We forget these players are still kids. Hell, even those in the NFL are in their early 20s. We truly forget.

Which is why they should not be getting that type of money from NIL. Immaturity and kids do not go along well with each other if there is no supervision.

I'm not sure the school could keep you from it, could they? I mean, even if you're in the portal, at the moment, you're still a scholarship athlete and full time student at the school that you're enrolled at.

I'm not sure about all that. I thought if you went into the portal you really aren't part of the team any longer. Isn't that why coaches try to re-recruit you back. The coach can also say goodbye and not even accept you back. A player takes a chance on going into the portal. Obviously, the better players don't worry so much.

No. Entering the portal means nothing with your standing at the university. They still have finals to take. Once you enter the portal, different rules regarding contact take place, but you are with the program until you sign with another school, the signing period ends and you haven’t signed anywhere else, or you remove your name.

Can anyone shed some light on the way that the recruiting is done at UNLV? Does Odom himself do any recruiting? I'd think he does, or at least has a role with most of their targets, but pretty much all of the offers that I've seen end up thanking one of the assistant coaches or coordinators for the offer.

I just listened to an NCAA power point presentation on the interwebs. It does say that if the school chooses they can terminate your athletic scholarship for the next school term. So, even if you don't transfer the school could still take away your scholarship. So the school does have a choice. Keep you or let your financial aid go away.

I always thought that scholarships were a year long commitment, but I could be wrong. If a football player were to be removed from the team in the 1st semester, I'd think that the school would still have to honor the scholarship, unless there is some criteria in the scholarship agreement that addresses it.

After the term, which is in mid December

NIL had nothing to do with my comment. It had more to do with those sitting in the stands having issues with these kids getting having an emotional reaction to the game for whatever reason; whether it's their bad play, letting the team down, losing, whatever.

Yeah, calling out a 19 or 20 year old kid with the weight of an entire program on his shoulders for the first time getting frustrated and emotional during a tough game isnt a good look. He understood exactly what his mistakes were costing the team. Im more ok with emotion than a QB who just walks off to the sideline and slaps hands like its not a big deal.

Tebow was crying after blowing it against Alabama. Some of these guys give a (bleep) and I’m not going to dump on them for it. They were that close to winning a conference title.
The way he did it didn't bother me at all. Caleb Williams jumping into his Mom's lap at the end of the game on the other hand is a little concerning.

I hear what you are saying. They're kids.

But to my mind, it enforces the concept that our society is fostering a bunch of pussies. In the Civil War, WW1 and WW2 we had Lt. Cols leading 100's of men in life or death struggles at age 21. The youngest Colonel of WW2 was 22. Responsible to lead 1000's of pilots and Airmen.

I don't think there is anything that CAN'T be expected of 18-21 year-olds in sport. What is the worst that can happen? They lose a game? Their NIL is a jeopardy? They break an ankle? 8 year-olds cry when they lose. 20 year old men - YES I SAID IT - don't cry over sport.

Our country hasn't been truly tested for @ 80 years. I'm fearful for what will become of us when, inevitably, we are tested.

You don't think those individuals cried at all when they realized a mistake cost them their friends or companions lives? Or when they had to go to a family members home after the war to tell the parents their last words? I mean honestly...
I get that society is as a whole a bit softer and certainly in sports, but good grief that's a terrible analogy to use regarding what the emotions of losing the biggest game of your career because of your mistakes

I don’t think it’s a terrible analogy. Even non combat military are responsible for task way above their maturity. I was an ast crew chief on fighter aircraft at 19 if I screwed up a pilot could die. We have construction guys JM’s age doing very complex tasks at the same age. Just suck up it land listen to your coaches and strive to do your best. There is no crying in football!
Cheers!

Of course they did but when exactly do they go from 'kid' to adult.

Said it 100 times.

Dudes a pillar in the community and on the team 'Fine young man'

Dude gets involved in some dumbassery 'Ah well he's just a kid'.

As far as emotions on sidelines, I have zero issue with it. I want guys that care.

The whole 'kid' thing is a pet peeve of mine.

I only use kid because he's like 20 years younger than me, lol... I agree they are adults, adults cry too when things don't work out the way they planned sometimes.

We have several things that we can recruit on besides the facilities:

Lou Graza finalist
Second team All American (as in all of America) Return Specialist
Jet
Ricky White (I believe that he won an award of some sort as well, or was honorable mention for a prestigious award)
MWC Freshman of the Year
MWC Coach of the Year
Marion won some Assistant Coach award as well

Then the case can be made that why get all worked up about a sport? It's just a game. We see A LOT of verbal crying (& wasted emotional investment) - YES, I SAID IT -from grown men every year on this site over something that is essentially meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Concerning ourselves that much in sports (& other entertainment) takes the focus off the truly important things going on around us. Truly a time waster don't you think?

Pretty much, yeah.
