Just saw it on twitter. Marquis Wimberly is no longer committed to UNLV. would have liked to have had him but with Boyd and Keys here at his spot in can see why he might look elsewhere to get more targets.

Wonder what he meant by "miscommunications" in his statement? Perhaps he wants to follow Lagow to Indiana?

Official visits aren't supposed to end with de-commits, but I'd rather have that than a guy who is here and unhappy. Hope he lands in a good spot for him and doesn't come back to bite us on the !

Typically no its not good, but I don't think this decision was based on his visit. I think this had been brewing for a while and the Lagow decision played a small role it as well.

There's a big need at wide receiver with just Kendal Keys and Devonte Boyd returning as guys with more than 3 catches in a season. The only other scholarship guys returning are true sophomore Brandon Presley and redshirt freshman Darren Woods.
The remaining guys are all walk-ons with Eldorado's Justin Brown (sophomore) being the only none freshman.
In state they missed out on guys like Devin Gray (Cincinnati), R.J. Hubert (Utah) and Isiah Macklin (SDSU) but they should consider former Virgin Valley star Devonte Milligan. At 6'2 185, he led Victor Valley (9-2) with 52 catches 976 yards and 10 scores but I'm not sure if he is a mid year guy however but he has 3 years to play 2.
They really should also go all in on Silverado's Devion Clayton who is a rare combination of size and speed that can be a dominant player.
Chaparral's Casey Acosta is a local player that can brings explosive speed being very similiar to Marcus Sullivan but more durable while Eldorado's Shane Barnes is another athlete that could develop quickly among the pass catchers at 6'2 185.
I'm interested in seeing how the walk-on guys have developed this spring but the WR spot needs numbers and athletes that can play extended downs next year. If you over-sign and a walk-on or two earn scholarships, then you grayshirt an incoming player or two but right now the team is an injury or defection away from being extremely thin among pass catchers.
Although I speak of locals, I really just want to see 2 or 3 more pass catchers brought in to fill out the roster and there are several really productive JC guys that should be in play in January. While Stanton looks like a very impressive guy as a quarterback prospect, he needs more guys that can haul in the ball to play to his potential.

Will I get what you are saying on missing out on guys, but we weren't going to get Gray or Hubert. We did miss on Macklin since it was to a conference opponent. I think they will add one more JUCO in this class who can contribute now, and maybe one more HS WR who can red shirt. Interested in watching the tape on the guys you listed.

offers out 4 star Javon Mckinley no interest thought 3 star Jeremiah Lorick, 3 star John Okwoli, 3 star Dezmon Patmon, 3 star Malik Talley, 2 star donell dunn 247 has him committed to Steven F Austin, two star Vincent Heard, Torin Justice. They will get a offer out tomorrow during the visits

I linked their HUDL highlights to their names in my post. It highly unlikely they will be pursued by the team but they really need some quality bodies at the position.

I agree, I do think Pressley has a chance to be a difference maker this year. Williams and Criswell were servicable and had some good moments. They also were guilty of some drops and never really did enough to take coverage off Boyd. Keyes got better as season wore on and has a chance to be a very good #2 guy opposite Boyd.

Wimberly wavered long ago when more and more offers kept coming. I don't like it when someone goes back on a verbal commit as coaches reduce recruiting efforts for some Pistons when this happens. Marquis should have decommited long ago but he was just waiting for a better offer. Kind of like asking the ok looking girl to the prom but then taking another when a prettier one comes along.

While I don't like it either this happens in football. We have two recruits in this weekend who've committed to other schools. Coaches don't stop recruiting players until they sign on the dotted line elsewhere.

I don't fault this kid for changing his mind. Coaches do the same thing to the kids. It happens every year on both sides. Sometimes a coach will pull a kids offer at the last minute if they can get someone they like better, often times leaving the kid with nothing available at all then from other schools.

I don't like it either but to go all cliche, it is what it is. I agree it sucks he waited this late in the process.

I really don't see this as late in the process, UNLV has picked up most of their players from those who dropped through the cracks in the last couple of days of the recruiting process. How many of those players had offers from other programs that backed off at the last second. Just like the coaches are working at recruiting the best players they can get, the players are also looking at putting together the best situation for themselves.

Under Hauck that was true about picking up players late in the process. Last year for Sanchez you really can't count because he started late in the process. This year we have more early verbals than anytime I can remember.

For JC kids this is actually getting later in the process for them. They typically sign or commit before HS kids. Spots start to dry up quick, and they need to find places where they can play right away.

I have no issue with the kid changing his mind. But let's be honest, its not the least bit sketchy the dude suddenly decides to de-commit 'after' getting a trip out to Las Vegas? It's possible but I find it unlikely that this decision wasn't already made before the trip.

Isn't he in California? The whole trip to Vegas thing holds more value if it's a back east kid not some guy who can get in the car and be here in a few hours or a half a day from NorCal. Although in fairness to the statement he's been coy about UNLV all along on twitter, but at least he thanked the fans and quite eloquently decimated in my opinion. i really think as talented as he is we have more pressing needs, we already have 3 commits at the WR position he was 4 plus we have 4 pretty good returners.

Like I said its not a huge issue to me. You are right, he had been pretty coy on twitter.

I don't hate the kid, or think he is wrong for changing his mind. I don't think he lacks character. I just don't like the timing of it.

If he got an offer to play at a 'better' school or one where he thinks he has a chance for more playing time, he should do what's best for him.

I just thought it strange that this talk with his coaches and family, came after his visit.

Wasn't he the 1st wr commit? He could have been looking at the depth chart. Ok only 4 players coming back I get to play immediately. Now there are 3 other commits now he may have been the 6th-8th receiver in the depth chart and not getting lots of playing time.

That's part of it. Boyd is locked in at the #1 spot. Keyes made some big strides last year. There was a very good chance he would have been the #3 guy and possibly #4 guy depending on how much Pressley improves with another spring camp.

Sanchez said he wanted to carry 8 Wrs. (6 would probably be active 2 red shirts)

As long as we have enough TEs & H-backs, that should be enough in the new offense.

Price has gotten better every year. I think Tim Holt could become a really nice weapon moving between TE/FB. Has solid speed at 4.6.

Funny how different offensive philosophies label players as an H-Back. Urban Meyer's offense typically has guys like Percy Harvin who can lineup at WR or Running back, sometimes taking direct snaps. Others refer to the H-Back as more of a TE/FB type like Frank Wychek back with the Titans.

I think Holt fits nice into that type of role. If that 4.6 is a legit time, he could create some real favorable match ups vs linebackers in the passing game. 4.6 isnt Olympic speed or anything but at 6'3 230 its plenty fast.

I like Clayton. With his size and speed you find a position for him.

Yup. Cotton's H-Back is more of the Aaron Hernandez mold [except for the murderer thing]. If he had his druthers, we'd see a big Y-TE [plays on the line of scrimmage] and an H-TE [primarily lined up like a wingback] on nearly every down.

In no way comparing, but you see us running more of what Florida did out of the spread formation under Meyer with a lot of power looks, or similar to a particular community college up north that runs a more power oriented version of the spread utilizing multiple TEs or leaving in a TE/FB. Vs what we did this year with more 3 and sometimes 4 WR sets?

With the way college football is now, most teams are operating out of the pistol and shotgun. Very few work primarily under center.

I liked a lot of what we ran this year and personally prefer an offense that is a little more run heavy.

When we have the right players, I bet that we will see more power formations like the I formation Nebraska used to run but with an H-TE rather than a wingback. Probably some Ace formation too. We will still see a lot of shotgun and some spread option that Cotton ran at New Mexico State. Interesting that the then HC of Utah watched NMSU and implemented a lot of it into his spread option in Salt Lake before he took it with him to Gainesville. CTS wants to pound opponents in the running game but he realizes that we can't get the players to operate the Husker offense of the 90s. It has to be a hybrid with a lot of speed implemented into the passing game which better suits our local recruiting pool.
