Who is your top choice to replace KK?

Again, none of those guys were journeyman
So you would rather has a coach that learned from one coach, as opposed to several?
I wouldn't. Especially since he keeps on getting better jobs. He took the job here as a favor, and he got a better one so he took that.

Why go or even consider the assistant route when you don’t have to?

Not to mention we finally broke rank of what we have done in the past in hiring football coaches and did not go the assistant route and look how that turned out.

This is recent so I know you see this!

Why put the program in the hands of someone unproven when you don’t need to?

This is not 10 years ago, the program is on its last legs financially and putting a new HC in place who needs “NO” ramp up time because he has already been a HC for a few years and knows how to run a program already is what I think makes the most sense now and that person is not Hartman.

What ultimately happens is not my decision but if you ask me, this is what I’m going to tell you!

We can agree to disagree on what Hartman is or isn’t all day but you cannot disagree with the success of UNLV football the last 2 years. Harper picked former HC’s for the job, why buck the trend in basketball when there are so many former HC’s to choose from?
There is no magic formula to hiring a good HC.

There are situations where a coach like Odom, did well mediocre to decent at a higher level, and does very well at a lower level. That exact same scenario has lead to failures.

Sometimes coaches come out of retirement and struggle.

Same with a coach that is elevating in competition. Same with an assistant taking their first job.

You can point to successes and failures for ALL of the above.

I again trust Harper making the pick. I think he has earned a certain level of trust at this point. Unlike last time, there seems to be a real search with a lot going into this decision. So I feel pretty good about whatever the decision will be.

Even if it is Hartman.

Based on where we're at as a program, going the assistant route will have a negative reaction, especially if it is Hartman, who was already here under Kruger before. It could end up working out great, but initial reaction from the fan base will not be positive.

Just hire Crean at least we KNOW he can coach. Buckyball is also another option. We need a attractive name that can draw fans and most important NIL money. Hiring a assistant and waiting a couple years to see if he can turn this around is a crapshoot. The better Coaches and the top BB gurus know who can coach on a top level and whom can't . Just let's pray Harper is listening to the right ones. I'm not religious, but whatever it takes to up grade this lemon I have been riding in the last dozen years or so. My UNLV bandwagon and Fandom is on its last wheel.

I believe that the support from the administration is as important as is who the HC is. When you’re in middle management, as a HC sorta is, if you don’t have NIL support and facilities then you look worse than you are. It goes the other way, too.

Can we just make an offer to Bill Self already?

Truth!

And if this is the initial reaction (which is a real possibility) in hiring an assistant, imagine how hard it will be to raise NIL money? The lifeblood to go shopping for needed talent in the transfer portal.
Advocating Hartman would be an uphill battle for Harper and would lead to more “ho hum” types of recruits which lead us to 5th place or lower finishes in the MWC, no regular season, MWC tournament titles and no NCAA appearances.

In other words, more of the same results which we cannot afford now.

Hartman now would be a huge risk, at this point in time for this program and I hope it’s not Hartman for this reason and the others I’ve mentioned repeatedly!

You mean like a HOF coach in Kruger who wanted him as a top assistant, or a guy like Golden making a huge jump in competition going from the WCC to the SEC?

I like Crean too. I like him probably the best out of realistic coaches. I have given up hope on Marshall, he would be hire by now and there has been no reports of him linked to any job. Guys like Wright and Bennett would be kind of stupid to take this job right now, they would be able to get much better jobs with better pay and better NIL support easily elsewhere.

The rest? All have positives and negatives to make them at least similar to me at least.

So Jon Scheyer was a terrible hire, same as Dutcher, who was an assistant for decades.

Top assistants often make the jump to big time HCs. Tommy Lloyd was an assistant for 20 years before going to Arizona as the HC.

At our level Leon Rice obvious had a similar path. He has done much much better than UNLV and Rodney Terry by a mile.

Often assistants make the jump to ELITE jobs. But we are too good for that?
It's more of a matter of timing and fit, along with the changing of the coaching game with transfers and NIL. The good coach who needs 3+ years to build up doesn't fit UNLV at this point in time. Probably a good fit taking over for an already successful coach/program. That's not UNLV right now.

UNLV needs a coach that has experience building top tier transfer talent immediately. This isn't a 3-5 year rebuilding job. The program is already on life support and the fans aren't coming back unless it's done quickly. Otherwise just shutter the T&M and start playing games in Cox.

We just need to be good period. If we turn down coaches that will take 3 years to do that over a guy that is flashy but may give a few more hundred fans in the building? That would be foolish. Especially if the flashy name may be past their prime
And yes I think the difference between a "name" and a lower level coach maybe 2k in season tickets, and probably 500k-1mil more in salary. Not sure if that is worth it, especially if the lower level guy is more likely to get us there as a program than the other.

We need a program again. We can't worry about first year attendance too much.

We have the benefit of a successful football program. Things are not that dire.

I'm happy that you said that. People seem to be really impatient with AD Harper that he hasn't hired anyone yet. I agree, dcu03 that, at this point, we should trust Harper and his recruiting. Last two choices were home runs. It doesn't always go that smoothly, May not like the timeframe, but let's support AD Harper and let him successfully get through this process before any criticism.

My expectation is the coach he wants is coaching for a team that is still playing. The question is he a head coach or an assistant?
