An exhilarating win. And another opportunity to see how important Patrick McCaw is to this team. In a season of utter disappointment, he is the one shining star.
Although they sure play dumb sometimes no one can question their effort.
And speaking of playing "dumb", despite the disastrous results this season, I still love the Rebels. In fact, in my 40-year love affair with UNLV basketball, I can honestly say that I’ve had great feeling for all of the young men who have donned the Scarlet & Gray.
Several years ago, there were a great many on this board who delighted in ripping Steve “Chopper” Jones. I felt sorry for him. It wasn’t his fault that he was not blessed with the skills of others on the team. He tried, and he wanted to be a Rebel. That earned him my respect. To a lesser degree, Carlos Lopez suffered similar treatment. But again, here was a kid who spent four years here, and contributed all he could.
But I have found a player who I wish, would never see the floor again. Ike Nwamu came here as a fifth-year senior transfer. One would therefore think that he would bring a maturity and leadership that would be beneficial to the underclassmen. Instead, he has exhibited cancerous qualities. His childish temper, leading to more than one technical foul, his disastrous decision-making and shot-selection, and his overall lack of the slightest basketball IQ, add up to a serious detriment to the team.
I don’t like to speak this way about any Rebel, but I’ve seen enough of Mr. Nwamu. He doesn’t deserve to wear the same uniform as those who’ve come before him.
