" UNLV is not expected to interview other candidates..."

It is embarrassing reading these posts. We are going to have a b-ball coach and the least we can do is welcome that person to LV and UNLV and stop this whining and whimpering. It is pathetic. Too many people started this search with unrealistic expectations which meant disappointment regardless of the outcome.

The new coach deserves the opportunity to succeed or fail on the court next season. Let's just chill out and hope for the best. Go Rebels.

Slow down hiker. Nobody is denying the new coach an opportunity to succeed or fail, but some of us are unhappy with this sh@@ show of a process. As alumni and season ticket holder I think I have a right to be. I'll support whatever clown shoes coach my alma mater decides to hire at the end of the day, but I don't have to like it.

Our expectations weren't the problem here. The problem was the bungling state of our athletic department ruining our chance to land a more accomplished head coach. So now we get either WAC Marv or the guy with 30 all time D1 wins.

Just out of curiosity what coaches did we miss on?

Dixon. No way we beat TCU in bidding war.
Underwood. See above
Cronin. Came here didn't see what he wanted or it wasn't a great fit. Said no.

Pitino? People need to stop with this nonsense.

Jay Wright? Nope.

Archie Miller? Not interested.

Lavin? Lots of reasons not to pull that trigger.

What other names are interesting that we can truly afford.

Honestly man. I really don't feel like rehashing every potential coach we missed on at this point. Any coach I name you can come up with a reason why we couldn't get. Most of the excuses would be false if you ask me. You and I both know we have no idea how much would be available for the right coach, so it's really hard to rule people out based on what we can and can't afford.

What it comes down to is what candidates have interest in the job. The reason I think we end up with these two candidates is because everyone knows our athletic department is a disaster and Tina's reputation is mud. There should have been a lot more interest in this job than there was, and that falls on the AD. I wouldn't be surprised to learn if possible candidates all over the country were warned to stay away from Toxic Tina and her shadow bosses, would you?

Exactly. That was/is the point of my original comments. The fact that it appears that absolutely zero first-tier coaches had any interest in the job--for whatever reason--is what is truly disturbing to me. It's a HUGE reality check.

We are about to land us a coach who was at Angelo State coaching Division.2 basketball in high school gyms 24 months ago.

And that's if she picks the better of the two finalists.

For what it's worth, of the two I'd rather have Beard. At least he has upside, if also the potential to be a complete disaster.

25 years of mediocre basketball will do that.

We have P5 basketball facilities.

Unfortunately we...

Pay like a mid major.

Play in a mid major conference that is trending downward.

Right or wrong we fired a coach mid season which is a bad look. Coaches are a faternity. That sits poorly with all of them. Whatever we as fans think, coaches on the outside see one of their own fired midseason with a winning record and no scandal.

At this point not that surprised it turned out like this.

Yeah. Play in a down in the dumps conference with a laughable tv deal, one step from being left out of the P5 loop, and a rabid fanbase that cans coaches with a month and a half left in the season(admittedly I was one of those who wanted Rice out). I don't understand why elite coaches (whoever they are) weren't lining up for a chance to leave their P5 conference school for a once in a lifetime opportunity like that! Cuhraaaaazy!

Well, last I checked, "mid-majors" don't typically offer coaches $2 million.

We didn't pay Kruger that. And we didn't pay Rice that.

This was an all out effort by boosters in an attempt to secure a solid coach. We have not seen that here in a long time. This was an exception based on our history not the norm.

We have historically paid like a mid major program.

It doesn't matter where the money came from, it still spends the same and 3 million is top ten money and even at 2 it's top tier.

It does in this instance. Without Under Armor backing we could not get to that number. Not just any coach we brought in was going to get us that support.

that right there happened (fact).
the Lep played us and the only other coaches that would be willing to come are those that are at a way worse place and will bounce as soon as they are successful because it won't be forgotten.

All College Basketball Coaches: "damn! that's what they do to an alum coach? i'd hate to see what they'd do to a coach that didn't go there."

If I recall, Tark was one of the highest paid coaches in NCAA basketball in the 80s, in the 700K range. We haven't always had a mid-major mentality.

Not always. Just more recently. We couldn't or refused to match OU on Kruger, and got Rice relatively cheap. Sanchez might be the lowest paid coach in the conference.

The school is not in good finacial shape. They are scrounging for money and moving money around to make things happen. Every effort is being made to position UNLV for a P5 move. There are a lot of hurdles though because of how cash strapped the university is at this time.

UNLV has always paid like a mid major. the offer wa sbetween 1.8 and 2.2 mil , not 3, never was close to 3. UNLV has moved from pcaa to big west to wac and than mountain west . gradually getting better each step, someday perhaps they will not be a mid major but right now they are a mid major that has financial problems. lets not even get into how if they got a big hire they may have had to cut a few professors..

Part of why Cronin wanted out of Cincy was facilities but also Cincy was not making headway to go power 5. He came, he saw and found an athletic director with one year left on a contract trying to make promises for the future and where UNLV was headed. the situation would have had to be perfect to take a local guy from coaching his alma mater. oh and while here he gets reports from his people that the local media is bashing his style of play calling him not a fit. Those reasons tend to make it easy for him to say no thanks.

btw Bull has some very solid info that is not agenda driven you might want to listen to him. or perhaps you all believe in local crap media and the westgate god

UNLV has the potential to go P5. A lot of things being worked on right now are pushing us in that direction.

The salary being offered to Cronin was out out of the norm for UNLV. Which was my point.

Actually i'm not positive on this so correct me if i'm wrong, but when we first got Kruger we were paying him pretty well by mod-'00's standards; like $1.3 mill... not top 5 money but I think was top 20 at the time. Really too bad we didn't up the offer to keep him tho.

I love the directions they are headed in both athletics and academically. The thing people don't realize is how young UNLV is. They just recently graduated their 100,000 alumni some power 5 get that every 3 years the booster base isn't even close let alone tv contracts.

It was close to that number.

But as you mentioned.

When OU came calling, UNLV bucked at matching. Some of that was probably due to people feeling Kruger had peaked. I think another part is we simply couldn't match it, or booster support was unwilling to make it happen.

We took the gamble on the cheaper option which was Rice..

For UNLV to get to what was offered Cronin it was really stretching the budget and boosters to get to around 2 million.

So, it's between Menzies and Beard. And...that's that, I guess. We have officially become a mediocre program with unrealistic expectations of attracting a big-name coach. WOW.

Beard will turn out to be the second greatest hire UNLV ever made..

I’m beginning to believe that. But as I expressed in another thread, should he achieve that level of success, just how long can we expect to keep him? Surely the Power conferences will come calling. He owes no particular allegiance to UNLV.

One-and-done…?

Cash is king, and UNLV, through their boosters, can offer more money than most of the Power conference teams would be willing to offer.

If he does so well that after one or two years he is fielding offers from top schools, I will take those one or two years.

If it's 4 years I will take those 4.

The "he might win too quickly to stay" argument doesn't work for me.
i don't like the idea of him bolting.....BUT if he is winning big, he will get paid and LV can be a pretty fun city to live in. if they offered the Lep $2.5, they'll be able to pony that up. LV likes winners.
