The block call

That blocking call on their big man near the end of regulation when we were up one and he threw the ball out of bounds was a killer. He was clearly out of control and for the ref to make that call at that time was very suspect.

We should’ve won this game, the refs screwed us over all night and especially on that blocking call

Taking a huge dump in overtime isn't ever acceptable, but that call was shenanigans. Even the announcers were in on it. Oh he was shuffling his feet. Fool I watched that replay three times, those feet were set. This would have been a good time for menzies to get himself tossed. Ain't nothing wrong with being the nice guy but damn your squad just got walked on and you allowed it. Should've won that game.

I disagree that last shuffle he made to get in front of the defender cost him. Had he stayed put, ball would have still be thrown out of bounds. We also had some pretty terrible shot selection last 4 minutes of regulation. Can’t make these types of mistakes and expect to win.

That call had no impact on that play what so ever. The right call was a NO-CALL. We didn't play well but we played our hearts out. It's a shame that call was made but that's life and on to Saturday

It seemed like a crap call.... but....

With 5 minutes left, the rebs up by a few:

  1. Lazy pass trying to push it up the floor quickly - turnover
  2. Run down, jack the three - miss
  3. Run down, jack the three - miss
  4. Run down, try to mow a defender over - charge, turnover
If they had settled at this time, scored on 2 out of those 4 possessions, extended the lead, would have won the game. No overtime needed. Refs taken out of the game.

Not really upset. Last night was the difference between a young inexperienced team with talent, and a veteran senior team. Should have won it, but this game is what conference play will be like. Guys should come away with a learning experience.

While I agree that the block was a pure “homer” call, I see no upside in MM getting a technical when the score is tied with just a few seconds left, and the Rebels in possession of the ball. Imagine if Marvin were to take your advice. Instead of that, we would probably be down (I’m not sure if, when the T is on the coach, do they get one shot, or two?), and UNI now has possession.

Had we known what was going to happen in OT, maybe settling it in regulation would have been a better route, but he’s a good coach, not a fortune teller. So, no, that would have been a terrible time for him to get a technical.

Among the lessons learned from this game, one is, don’t allow them to get close enough, for the refs to make one bullshit call, and cost you the game, especially on the road.

We have only one more true road game until conference play begins. That is at Pacific. They are currently 3-4. Among their losses are at Stanford (80-89) and a home loss to UNR(74-89). Those two were expected losses, but they have two other home losses. One, a grind-it-out affair with UC-Davis (58-62). The other to Texas State (78-85). an encouraging note is that, aside from the UC-Davis game, all of their games have been played in the high-70’s or the 80’s. so they like to run. That should play right into our hands. I expect a “W” in that one.

The Arizona game, and the Illinois game too, become extremely important now. They won’t erase the loss. We would like the committee to take into account that this game went to OT. We would like them to realize that, but for one bad call, we’d have won. But they will only look at it as a road loss, to a mid-major team. We need to win the conference, if we expect to be dancing in March.

Had we swept this week, we might have entertained hopes of an at-large bid, assuming we didn’t blow it in Mountain West play. so that charge/block call cost us more than just the game. Of course, a similar call, this one on Greg Anthony, probably cost us a repeat NC, and a perfect season. Here it is, 27 years later, haven't gotten over it yet. Maybe next year...

So, one more time. What did we learn? Blow them away. Do it early, and do it often. Take the ball away from the striped-shirts. They are not our friends. Simple,…Right?

Yes in retrospect the idea of getting a technical at that point of the game would have been a game losing decision. I'm a little hotheaded and probably couldn't have stayed chill if I were in that position. It wasn't that call that cost the game anyway. Poor ball handling and soft interior defense were the bigger issues. A little more control and they would've run that team right out of Iowa.

Really? Young inexperienced team? Our two starting SENIOR guards might have something to say about that. Considering the two of them combined for 3-16 from behind the arc and many of the turn overs I don't think experience or lack thereof had anything to do with it.

The BAD call absolutely took what would have most assuredly been a win on the Rebels part. Up 1 with the ball and 18 seconds left. Granted there were numerous things that could have changed the outcome of the game in regular and OT, the bad call doesn't get excused just like the bad play doesn't get excused. Too many turn overs and rushed jacked up 3's at the end of the game. Why doesn't our stud 7'1 center touch the ball in the second half? I think he may have had 1 shot in the second half. Our guards never got the ball into his hands for what were easy baskets in the first half.

I'm guessing that he meant "young" in terms of their experience playing together. Their two principal scorers, Koch and Carlson, who were responsible for 20 of their 27 FG’s, are both red shirt-juniors. They’ve spent four years learning how to play together.

Our guards are both seniors, true, but JJ is only seven games into his UNLV experience. And JoJo is in his second season. His first was last season's debacle, when the focus was mainly on himself. Expecting him to make the adjustment, back to the two-guard, on a team with multiple weapons, is going to take some time.

Having said all of that, it doesn’t excuse their poor decision-making throughout this game. They nearly won it despite the guard play, but a bit less of them and a bit more Brandon McCoy and Shakur Juiston and we could have run away with it. I expect Marvin Menzies to address these issues in practice between now and the Arizona visit.

Yes. Inexperienced team. That isn't a knock against them, they have only been playing together for less than a month. With 2 games that were a challenge. Yes, we have a few vets, but that doesn't entirely replace cohesion from guys that have played together for years. I'm sure Menzies will take away solid coaching points and even though lost the game, betting it will be a good learning experience for these guys. I'm impressed with these guys and how they have played to date. Even in this loss. They have the skills to do very well and are a joy watching.
