In nearly every case where a player has flipped, there has been an almost immediate response/commitment from another quality recruit.

Good to see...
It's one of the things that tell me arroyo knows wtf he's doing. Also the fact that he's recruiting guys who don't have grade issues. I don't think i realised how bad our roster had become before him

Sanchez upped the recruiting over Hauck. Just not to the degree some thought.

Not going to get overly excited. Or suddenly start making wild predictions based on one class.

But this was a pretty impressive haul in a relatively short period of time.

Yeah one class doesn't turn a program around. I'm excited for the future because what we just saw didn't happen by accident. That takes alot of planning, execution and late night coffee. If he has that kind of inner drive year round he will build a winner here.

I readily admit, of the likely candidates (Scalley, Gonzales, Avalos, Hill and Arroyo) Arroyo wasn't near the top.

But this was impressive.

He has a tough schedule this year.

Way to early for predictions.

But I definitely expect to see a more competitive team on the field week in and week out.

Bowling? Maybe not this year (also maybe) but fewer blowout losses.

The roster based on MWC annual recruitment ranking showed us this:

MWC Rank 2019: 8
2018: 8
2017: 11

We've been mired down for several years and another year of CTS wasn't going to change a thing. The 2020 off the charts recruitment isn't going to get us out of the hole just yet either. We need 2 or 3 more years of CMA recruiting at the high level to turn things around. I hope people aren't expecting miracles next season.

2016 was the third ranked class in the conference per 247 and then after that his recruiting took a dive back down. As for Rivals, UNLV has the #1 ranked class this year for the MWC.

Words to take away from Recruiting Special from DC. Long, Violent, etc.
I was impressed with the DC. I did not know we are going to 3 Four alignment and linebackers will come from everywhere. Blitz packages anyone. Will be fun to see this linebacker group grow.

I'm glad you brought that up. I didn't think that much of our DC until he spoke on signing day. Seems to have his head into the style of play he wants and the players to do it. Looking forward to see how all this plays out in the future.

I expected 3-4 based on Stanford and 49ers DC's that Hansen has worked under - Vic Fanggio and Lance Anderson. Both 3-4 guys.

That said, you're dead on with the takeaway on the verbage. I was impressed by his enthusiasm and energy, too. Not gonna lie, I didn't expected to be.

I know that we are a super scorned and beaten-down fan base, and being excited is not really our thing since we are always preparing ourselves for the next disappointment, but I'm impressed by CMA.

He gave us the best recruiting class we have had in decades in just weeks of being on the job. I'm not saying he can coach and that we will be good, but I am saying he surpassed expectations for what this recruiting class was going to be. And for that, I'm excited.

Okay, now everyone can go back to adding all their qualifiers on how tough our schedule is this year, how we still have not won any games, and even if we do win he is just going to leave us.

It will be interesting to see who is finally hired as the Reb's D-Line coach.

Yesterday I was reading about a coaching clinic that was being held here in town this weekend:

https://www.glazierclinics.com/Coaching_Clinics/Las-Vegas-Nevada-Football-Clinic#clinic_schedule

Coach Arroyo was a speaker, and interestingly former UNLV ST/RB coach Travis Burkett was also.

UNLV LB coach Kenwick Thompson (who came from Fresno St) spoke last night on several defensive topics, including "DE Pass Rush Techniques". I believe we are going to start pressuring QBs more finally.

Pass rush has been a huge problem for years.

It's not just lack of sacks, it's the inability to even get pressure or make QBs uncomfortable..

The signees are designed to fit into a fast innovative coming from all angles defense. The corners are tall, fast and growing. Inside guys are long, huge guys who are only freshmen. Linebackers look to have a huge upside. As coach stated he expects this class to contribute. Having watched UW do the same type of build, it will take two years but we have two new qb's who are excellent so I expect lots of offense with a more aggressive defense. It will be fun to watch. Returning guys will also get better.

Looking at the level of the transfers over the last two years, and the very strong defensive recruits in the 2020 class, I expect to see an immediate improvement in the level of play from the defensive side of the ball. We are getting defensive players that are faster, stronger, taller, and bigger than those we have had in the past and it should quickly show up in practice and at game time. In the past we mostly received commits from marginal defensive players that had few if any other upper level offers, the players we got this year have numerous offers which says a lot about the level of play we can expect to see on the field.

It's a lot to ask true freshman to contribute right away.

Last season Jacoby Windom looked really solid in Spring but probably needed a season to physically mature.

I think the defense will be better.. How much is the question.

Granted the defense was not great last season, but it did lose some of it's better contributors, namely Javin White and Jackson....Others like Flowers and McCoy were solid pieces.

It might take a year to see big strides...

Our DC prior to the Skipper brought us to a new low. Those three years prior to Skipper pissed me off so much. CTS made a huge mistake in keeping that guy for so long. Skipper was better but had to work with what was dealt him from the previous guy. It's still going to take some time but, I like the way we've recruited with defensive players. I just hope our new DC can get the job done for us.

There were some things to like under Skipper...

Overall numbers were not good though. They pretty much mirrored what we saw under Baer..

I agree though, Sanchez held onto Baer a season too long.

At least that what I remember, one hour of weights and one hour of cardio and one hour of something competitive...

Bull - you kind of proved my point when you referred to losing Jackson. Rayshad Jackson was a low 3 star rated player out of high school who was a graduate transfer from Florida who by himself made a huge impact for UNLV in one season. We now have a hand full of high level 3* players. We also have Adam Plant who was a high 3* rated player from TCU who has the potential to have a much bigger impact than Jackson. UNLV had a bad defense in the past because they had undersized and slower players being outclassed by the offense of the other team, with the improvements in size and speed, that will change. One or two skilled players could totally change the dynamic of the UNLV defense and make it much harder for other teams to burn us on a regular basis on third and long.

I've re-evaluated my view of Tim Skipper. I try to be restrained with criticism, so I supposed buried here in a thread about a de-committed TE is a good place to only speak to serious UNLVfb fans...

First, (and I see now others here have made the same point...) how ugly would last season's defense have looked without Rayshad Jackson showing up during the summer. That Florida pipeline would be 3 years removed now and had likely dried up.

Second, notice that none of the five Skipper commits for the '20 class made the final cut? Looking at that group now and the other "targets" that were in the picture, it's looking like the '20 defensive class would have been another weak one. They were:
  • DB Justin Pinkney - sounded impressive because of the Auburn "offer", but he was one of 66 DB/ATH '20 players that announced Auburn offers, and only five of them signed; all five were 4-star recruits.
  • OLB Iopu Tauiliili - no offers other than UNLV
  • CB Kobe Jenkins - no offers other than UNLV; I believe Jenkins is the son of one of Skipper's friends and former teammates.
  • OLB Jabaz Myles - signed with FCS Ark-Pine Bluff; only other offer Northwestern State
  • DT Tai Tuinei - no offers other than UNLV
Pinkney is the only one in that group that would have been in the top 10 of signed players (247Sports would have had him at #6).
