Rebels were back in full pads today, and responded with a spirited, hard hitting practice. Highlight of the day was the 11 v 11 goaline drills. Both sides of the ball had some good moments. Mike Hughes and Jason Fao continue to be difficult to handle on the interior. Runningback Evan Owens scored on a physical run to end the session. Charles Williams and Lexington Thomas despite not being particularly big backs are both solid short yardage runners. Williams in particular finishes his runs well with good pad level.

Safety Demetrious Gibbs saw some more run with the first team defense. He was involved in a big hit at the goaline to help give the defense a stop.

Gabe McCoy appears to get more comfortable with his transition to outside linebacker with each practice. McCoy recorded another 'sack' today and was disruptive vs the run.

Brandon Presley hauled in a beatiful ball from Johnny Stanton for a long touchdown, continuing his strong play.

I really like Gibbs at safety, he'a really fast. Nice to finally have a safety that can cover ground. A few of the long passes that escaped the defense at least had Gibbs close enough to do something. We gave up way too many long balls last year. He almost caught Presley on a deep ball from Rogers for what turned out to be a nice long run score. Not bad since he wasn't covering Presley to begin with. Another 5 yards and Gibbs would have had the stop.

I wouldn't count Stanton out of the game yet. He's pushing Rogers, he looks like the guy we thought he would be. He could make a career in the NFL as a fullback/ middle linebackerwith the way he breaks defenders. He was able to show off the long ball and displayed his arm talent. He's a guy you want if you need a hail mary. On a break away he hit Presley in full stride down field. Big and beautiful arc with a tight spiral that fell right into Presley's hands. We wish he had the same spirit last year.

Could be a heck of an H-back/Super Back. I wonder if Barney could get him into some games that way if he doesn't become the starting QB?

It would be a waste of arm talent, but even so I d like to see him on goal line packages lined up at full back. He could be our new "short yard specialist" since Green graduated.

If Johnny Stanton wins the quarterback competition, then I fear we're in trouble. His accuracy was atrocious. Who cares how strong your arm is if you can't locate the ball?

Stanton has been on point this year for the most part. Last year he didn't inspire confidence past the first game at spring ball. If he plays to his potential this year and has the type of senior year Caleb Herring had, then I m okay with that. I don't care who wins the job as long as we win games. If the 5'4 place kicker can move the chains as a qb, then sign him up. I ll live with it as long as we we post over 8 wins and the cannon comes home.

Outside of his HUDL tape, how many passes of Armani Rogers have you seen?

Have you attended any practices this year?

Stanton struggled last Spring, it carried over into the Fall.

However...

He looks like a completely different QB this camp.

Had he been this good last Spring, the QB competition would not have spilled into the Fall. He's shown good command/understanding of the offense. Has thrown the deep ball well. Accuracy is much improved.

Add in the fact he sells the read option better than any QB on the roster.

There is a very good QB competition brewing right now. Last year Stanton essentially won the job by default.

This year he is performing well, as is Rogers.

Don't mention kickers here. :boxing:

I was able to make this practice as well. This year is not a case of picking the best "game manager". These guys (Stanton and Rogers) are making plays and showing consistency. A healthy WR group is a huge boost as well. Whoever starts has earned it this year and the other guy will most likely still play a solid role this season.

Almost forgot, JUCO Punter Sam Tapia was visiting practice . Was a teammate of Roger Mann's . Landing him would help take some duties off of Pantels and allow him to concentrate on Field Goals.

Did you say the "P" word????

If Armani wins the job, I think Stanton will still have a role.

Think Tebow his redshirt freshman year. Any time the Gators got inside the 10 they brought in Tebow to run their 'heavy package'. Stanton with his size can make his own yards.

Stanton could also get big 3rd or 4th and short situations.
I like where you're going with this.

Let me stress this is not something I have seen in practice. Just something I could envision them doing based on Stanton's size and how adept he is at running the zone read.
Oh that was quite clear. Just enjoying the brainstorming
