Spring Ball

With most programs it is I can't go this year, but next year I will go to the bowl game. With UNLV, it is I can't go this decade, but next decade I will go! I hope that is past history and we start going on a yearly basis!

It looks like we may have a bunch of really good players on D next season. Vic could be something really special. He could be the type of leader on defense that could move UNLV to the next level. One good season, and we are on are way!

I'll put it like this.

There are some things to like.

I would temper expectations though.

If the D for UNLV just moved to average in the MWC, we would be one of the top teams!

Realistically for them to get bowl eligible the following has to happen.

(Assuming the offense performs as it has the last few years).

1) They have to shave nearly 10 points per game against off. Even then you are still looking at giving up 28 points per game.

2) Sack total has to improve 50% over last year. They only had 21 sacks so not even two per game. That stat gets more depressing when you factor in we were 113th in the country in sack %.

3) Three and outs. They have to force considerably more 3 and outs to give the offense a shorter field to work with.

Can it be done? Sure.

But it's a lot to ask..

And we have put up more points than the other team?

Tejchman has been awesome at safety! He brings real speed to that group. Our two deep in that position is solid. Over all, I can't say I've been disappointed with the DBs this spring.

I do question our interior D line depth. Kolo can bang, but past him everyone else is more or less a band aid until Kolo catches his breath.

To be clear, I agree with the sentiment here.

It's just a lot to ask when you consider UNLV's defense has been awful for over a decade now. You could make an argument last year was the worst of Sanchez four years here...

The numbers are right in line with Hauck's defenses. Both had/have only one season in the top 100 in total defense. And it was 92 and 88 respectively.

I look at the quality of the top defensive players that are coming in for UNLV next season and believe we have a lot more speed and aggressiveness in comparison to the last few years.

Right now here is who is running with the 1st team defense thus far.

DE-Malakius
DT-Uesike
DE-Neal

LB- White
LB- Viramontes
LB-Salu-Gibbs-Hester (Going to be situational)
LB-McCoy

CB- Flowers
SF- Austrie
SF- Tejchman
CB- Plummer

There's a JUCO safety and corner coming in the fall and one true fresh DE that could compete for time. That's it.

DL-

Malakius was a juco from last year, who barely played. He's currently running with the 1st team.

Uesike returns.

Neal is in year 3 and finally seeing the field.

LB-

White was here last year.

Viramontes obviously new.

Gibbs/Hester played last year. Salu was a RS.

McCoy started last year.

DB-

Plummer, Flowers and Austrie all started at some point last year. Tejchman converted from WR and started a couple games.

So as it stands 9 of the 11 guys currently running with the 1st team either started or played significant minutes last year.

This can change as new guys get comfortable. I'm only suggesting that people temper expectations.
