Syracuse: San Diego State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett has joined the staff in the same capacity. Ironically, Rocky Long interviewed for the same job before retiring. “Zach is a very talented coach,” Dino Babers said. “He learned under a great defensive mind in Rocky Long at San Diego State and excelled when he got the opportunity to run the defense there. His qualities, both as a person and as a professional, are an excellent fit for our program.”

So with Long and Arnett gone, it's 100% Hoke defense.

I hope they suck! :)

UNLV braintrust needs to get off their collective butts and get Long here!
Arroyo, President, AD and anyone else that is charismatic and persuasive.. needs to work together to improve UNLV going forward and that means the football team with a strong D!

Why the assumption that people aren't working to get things done?

Same type of thing during the coaching search...

'OMG! WTF! Why is Desiree taking so long!'
'This search is a disaster!'

UNLV ended up being the first to actually hire a coach out of all the openings in the MWC.

So all the wailing and gnashing of teeth was for naught.

Whether we all liked the hire or not...Different discussion.

Maybe there are struggles behind the scenes. Maybe things aren't going swimmingly. But I'm sure people aren't sitting around doing nothing.

Well, that the UNLV/Raider details aren’t all ironed out yet, and the Raiders are waiting on UNLV… and face it, the loon WANTED Morton Poyser - that’s all you need to know when it comes to competence. You can’t undo it. I can’t unfathom it.

I get all that Joe.

But good lord the football search was all of a week in the process and people were flipping out about because of how long it was taking. A number of other schools hadn't made any hires but don't let that stop the overreaction here.

Then, she ends up making the first hire in the MWC.

Any comments like, 'maybe we overreacted' or 'maybe the search went at the pace she intended' or 'maybe she had a plan and stuck to it' ?

Nope...

We just move on to the next dilema...

I get she is unpopular.

She's incompetent.

Etc etc etc.

What is unfair, is that if TJ figures it out or Arroyo does well the prevailing sentiment around here won't be 'maybe she did a decent job after all' it will be 'she lucked into this or that, or somebody else called the final shots.' 'She had very little input'

Anybody can fluke into something as well. I think she did fine with Arroyo. Who knows with Otz, time will tell. She could go 2-0.

But she wanted Hoser Morton.

She doesn’t know what she’s doing even if she flukes into it.

Like I said...

If it's good, she has no clue.

If its bad she was the architect.

Damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.

No.

She picked Horton Moser. That in itself, regardless of successes of failures, tells you what you need to know. She’s bad. Period.

If a doctor misdiagnoses your kidney infection as tuberculosis and gives you medicine for TB, it will wipe out the kidney infection. Cured!

But the doctor is still a moron who shouldn’t be in practice.

Horton Moser. UNLV. Get tf out of here.

Question. Does Coach Arroyo want to run the 3-3-5 Defense. Maybe he believes in other defenses like 4-3.

I said what I said partly based on the coach she initially salivated over and now her choice for football who might be decent but has a lot of work to do just getting a staff and due to that is starting off slow!

It may look like work to you but to me it looks like she is good at getting "low hanging" fruit!

Sanchez hired Skipper mid January.

Do you know any of this for fact. That they are sitting around doing nothing?

For all any of us know he has people lined up. Maybe he's still vetting people. Could be finishing it up. We don't know.

Dude, you’re fighting a losing battle on here.
Sometimes what it is is what it is.

Maxson killed UNLV. Saying otherwise is nonsense.

She wanted Horton Poser. Because he fluked into a FF as career 500 coach. Her “slam dunk” hire that would fire up the fanbase.

Shows she doesn’t know our fanbase. Shows she doesn’t understand college basketball. Which is probably something an AD at UNLV should understand.

Did you just say "fluked into a Final Four"?

HAHAHAHAHA

I'm sorry but you cannot fluke into a final freaking four. You can fluke your way into a win or two, but surviving 2 whole weekends in the NCAA tournament takes more than luck.

Not to say that Moser would have been a great choice, I'm glad we didn't get him, but still you cannot minimize what he did that year. It was a true accomplishment. No matter how much you purposefully change his name

He hasn't had a great record, but he is at a small school, and he is as successful as you would expect most coaches to be in that job. Oh yeah, and he went to a final four.

I do believe DRF probably is not that plugged in to college basketball, which is why she hired a very reputable search firm to guide her. That's why she interviewed him early based off those recommendations. This is a professional organization that vets candidates.

If that was such a ridiculous proposition, why did Cincinnati, a much better job, go out and hire that same firm? And also still go after Moser themselves?

DRF should be judged on her hires, not on her interviews. Just like all AD's, it's the highest grading criteria on her resume. Period.

We will see if she has been competent or not.

There’s still a coaches conference at the end of this month where positions will be vacated and filled
Afca is right now through Tuesday

(Just to put dates on it). Between AFCA amd both national title games being over by end of day tuesday, I would think it's reasonable to expect a complete staff by end of week...

When you are going to put the future of the college basketball team in the hands of a guy who reaches an acceptable level of success 5% of the time, you are a moron. Granted, that one out of 20 times he reached an acceptable level, he far surpassed it. It’s akin to giving Marv a 5 year extension for going to OT with Arizona. It means you are knee jerk and ignorant. It means you are OUT OF TOUCH. It is supposed to be your area of ABSOLUTE EXPERTISE. I’m sure you’d have been peachy keen with his hire and used the Final Four fuel until he was fired for doing a little bit better than Munchies after 3 years.

When you are a professional in a specific field and you have some experience, it’s laughable, it’s embarrassing when you don’t understand the very essence of your duties. You are defending a person by admitting she probably doesn’t understand her job. Wow. Just wow. She’s not competent. Because the bum she wanted rejected her isn’t a defense. It shows what she’s thinking, what she’s doing. And she’s asleep at the wheel with the Raiders dealings - maybe the press will get to that soon.

Listen, I know UNLV and everything surrounding them can do no wrong in your eyes. Tiny crowds are ok as long as they are cozy and the very few that attend had a good time. Losing to LMU at home by double digits is ok because they’re pretty doggone good and we must be patient with the slow growth philosophy.

I don’t know how to break it to you, things aren’t great. Football plus basketball the past few years is below .500 Most people aren’t ok with it or with UNLV, that’s why they’ve bolted. In case you haven’t noticed.

Spilotro - For some reason you seam to have major anger issues when it is in regards to our AD. Trying to bring up an interview of a coach, that you do not like, and wasn't hired by the AD, is not grounds to fire her and find a new AD. Calling someone out as a moron for not doing what you think is appropriate isn't the way to handle your dislike of the AD. She has made two significant coach hires, and at this point it is too early to know if these hires will end up being great, good, average, or poor decisions!

Rocky Long's defenses have always been very successful. However just pointing out that coach Arroyo may want to do his own thing.

There’s more than that. She was unqualified, she’s incompetent.

You don’t have a problem with her line of thinking, I do. Those are true colors, it shows where you are at with things. It was bad judgment, she knew Menzies was toast before he did. So she had time.

I don’t have any anger issues, UNLV can do whatever they want, they do anyway, and as they keep doing them the way they want, they lose fans and games.

She blocked significant football transfers. Because it’s her belief or because she wanted Tony out? I don’t know the answer to that.

She’s in over her head. Even at UNLV. But she will get bigger and better because society now says, you don’t have to be qualified, it comes down to other things.

The Raiders crap should have been hashed out at the table long ago. Much is still pending and undecided. That’s not on the Raiders, they’re waiting ... if you know anybody with the Raiders, ask what they think of her. If you know anybody at UNLV, as what they think of her.

She talks a good game. Buzz words. Charismatic. Liked on the surface. But she’s not an asset.

For the record, I don’t have issue with her Arroyo hiring. Both Arroyo and Otz can have success, I’m not denying that. I don’t have a problem with Otz either, that we arrived at him after Morton blows my mind. So yeah, that process, that line of thinking ... told me all I needed to know about her.

She’s still incompetent. Hiring isn’t brain surgery. If you or I were in that chair being wholly unqualified, we’d come up with something similar, no? Actually, I’d have raised more money and gone for broke, but that’s just me.

But I wouldn’t have ever hired a search firm and I’d never considered Hoser for hire. And I’m not qualified to be an AD, but I sure as shit know that much. The reason to hire a search firm is so that you, as a university, don’t have to respond to public record requests (reporters) because a third party is handling it. I think it’s stupid, I’d go about my business as I saw fit and I’d go who I think was the best fit for the available money. And if I only had 100k at my disposal, I would never even pursued Horton Poyser. I’d hit up a JC coach before that. She actually tried to out-Tina TMK with Hoser. Unreal. What was more embarrassing is he still rejected her.

Legitimate question. Who that UNLV could have gotten would have been qualified?

Also, I removed it from the quote but you mentioned that shes in over her head "even at unlv" .... I would UNLV is the most likely place for an AD in ALL of FBS, maybe all of d1.

Ridiculous expectations in hoops? Check
WILDLY underfunded programs? Check
Until recently, NO funding in football? Check
Boosters who dont want what's best for the program, but want unreasonable control? Check

Like at least sjsu doesnt have fans expecting sweet 16 every year.

And fcs schools, even established ones, dont forsake the program and its history because their stadium is all of 8 miles from campus.

Edit... just saying. I know you know more about the entirety of the department and it's current personnel than I do, but for anyone to come in and not be in over there head at the dumpster fire that is UNLV Athletics in 2016 when she was hired... only a few wouldn't be... and they would not have come here (I would assume).

It’s part of my point. If UNLV ever wants to be a major thing, they need to spend money at the top. If they want to have an opportunity to compete in conference and regionally, we roll the dice the way we’ve been. It hasn’t worked out so far.

She’s making 350k or so per year to be an “expert” in athletics and she doesn’t know the difference between John Wooden and John Madden. Sorry ... you have to know your stuff a little bit, no?

I think you hire a top notch AD, step back president since you don’t know Jack about sports either - and let the AD do their job. Hires, fires, raising money, working contracts, networking with businesses and boosters, being a strong figure within conference, etc. If you have to go 1M per year, do it, with high expectations. Then let them figure the rest out. Last two AD’s have been athletically clueless. So far, I believe there’s a direct correlation between UNLV football plus basketball being below 500 combined for the past three/four seasons. That should never happen. Just shouldn’t.

And when the very first name I get on the direct contact list with the highest interest is Morton Poser ... seriously. I know UNLV has fallen off a cliff, but when we start hiring the Menzies’ and Hosers of the world - these are bad choices, bad fits, terrible fits. You can’t do much worse even with a ton of effort.

So spend up top and let them take care of the areas where they ARE experts, not in areas they should be experts but are novices.

Is UNLV a tough job? Absolutely, it’s a nightmare.

But give me 350k per year at 5 years, I’m confident I could get more done and I’m unqualified in comparison aside from the niche that I understand the college landscape and UNLV.

I had no clue she was blocking football transfers. Sanchez had a pretty good record of recruiting quality kids that went to class and graduated. I can only base her job performance on her actions. The fact that she has difficult relations with boosters is a little troublesome. The fact that the university is on the hook for close to 14 million dollars between the basketball and football coaches salaries is a little troublesome. I understand that the money that we are getting from the Allegiant Stadium deal is significant. If we have to play another game at SBS it'll be embarrassing. She will also be judged on how we open up the new stadium. It's 2020 and we still don't know who the title sponsors are for football. Also there's been no mention of the game day experience at Allegiant Stadium ( tailgate areas, food options, kid play area, field level club access). Those are just a few things on her plate. I also heard this past week there was an issue with the new football operations director. I guess he was here week and decided to go back to Fresno State.

I'm a firm believer in relationships. Sounds to me that she will need to work on building better relationships with our boosters and donors.
