Rogers to start vs Northwestern

It will be interesting to see how he does....
It wouldn't surprise me if it's a 180 for him and keeps us guessing on which Armani is going to show up each week. Similar to the 1st scrimmage and 2nd scrimmage.
I really like what I see out of Oblad too... and wouldn't mind seeing how he would handle extended play.

The problem with Armani is he is such an inaccurate passer, he never throws the ball away when he should. I think his passing rating is so low, he would rather take a 10 yard loss on a sack than mess up his completion percentages even more.

Rogers has completed greater that 45% of his passes in just 5 of his last 14 games and greater than 53% in just 2 contest during that period. Northwestern's offense stunk in game one so there is a chance we can grab a surprise but it won't be through the air.

Northwestern struggled against a decent Stanford offense.

I think this game looks like the Michigan game a few years back. Rebs will hang around. Keep it interesting for 3 quarters. End up losing 28- 14. Maybe 31-17. Something like that.

What is worrisome is, the Arkansas State game looked exactly like last year.

Zero pressure on the QB.
Wear down in second half.

If Sanchez lose two games in a row, fire his ass...be done with it. He aint going to change. If UNLV beat NW, then keep him another week otherwise just fire his ass. He is sticking with the same QB that got dismantled by Ark St.

If he were to lose the next two and start 1-3.

He'll be staring at...

Boise State (H)
Vandy (A)
Fresno (A)
SDSU (H)

I'm having a tough time finding a win in that stretch.

Maybe Arkansas State game will prove to be an outlier. Just a night where it all went bad.

But that looked a lot like a number of last years performances.

Season is far from over. But if he fails to at least split the next two, for all intents and purposes it probably will be.

He is either too dumb or too stubborn to change. Which is fine if he wins. But if he is sticking with the same ammo and expecting a different result then he is both dumb and stubborn. It is pointless.

Or maybe...

Hear me our here.

Maybe the other options wouldn't be a significant improvement.

I'll say it again.

Oblad has a pretty strong arm and shows good accuracy.

He had a solid spring.

But he did nothing to really separate himself from any of the QBs on the roster.

Is it possible that Rogers is a good practice player who can't translate to game day and Oblad is a fair practice player who steps up on Saturday?

Possible.

Rogers is Rogers. He's never going to be a particularly accurate guy. You would hope he'd be better by now. I'm not sure if its mechanics, mental a combination of both..

But again, besides Pete and one other poster here who attend most practices, a lot of folks are making evaluations based off of a couple of garbage time throws.

Pete is higher on Oblad than I am. Not that I don't think he has talent, I'm just not as high on him.

I'm not sure if he got the starting nod our fortunes change.

I need to see Oblad in there vs an opponents 1st team taking snaps that really matter.

Since Sanchez doesn’t think we have a better option than Rogers isn’t it on he and the QB coach for not recruiting and developing better players at that position?

Quality schools have more depth in that position than we could dream of. Personally, I think Oblad is the better option even if he was wearing concrete shoes. Of course I don’t know about the 3rd and 4th string QBs but, of the two I’ve seen, one guy is a true QB and the other should be a TE.

I like Oblad. He’s a great young man whose maturity shocked me when I was interviewing him as a senior. He is bright, and acknowledges his strengths and weaknesses. He knows what he needs to improve on.

After watching him in practice with Bull and Pete, I also agree that he’s great at slinging the ball. I would expect Nevada’s high school all time passing leader to be at least above average at passing

However, he really does change the offense with his lack of scramble ability. Lex had his numbers drop when Armani got hurt since it allowed defenses go zero in on him. They didn’t have to plan for Gilliam being able to break away for a 40 yard scramble. Gilliam is much faster at running than Oblad.

I think our options are to commit to one. Either we run (Armani) or we try to go air raid (Oblad). We don’t have a passing O line.

If the quarterback could stretch the field and had a high percentage chance of completing passes downfield, teams wouldn't be able to blitz as heavily and feel comfortable playing single coverage.
Teams also recognize Armani has speed but he isn't a threat to go the distance on broken plays. He's a designed run threat rather than a scrambler.

Is depth really the issue?

We have landed a quality(on paper) QB every class since Sanchez has been here. Grayson, Mumphrey, Oblad. While, picking up former 4 star transfer Max Gilliam to boot.

Could it be development, general scheme?

On paper wasn’t Beas Hamga a 5-star recruit in basketball? Would you consider either Gilliam or Rogers a quality QB right now? Maybe Viramontes can man the position since he was a highly lauded QB at one point.

I’m not ripping you personally, just pointing out that sometimes we see a highlight film and justify that player more than we should. I did it with Kathryn Whinehard in basketball so I’ve been guilty, your honor.

I have mentioned that our “QB coach” is collecting a paycheck instead of developing those guys.

My point that all of these guys (maybe not Grayson so much) were all considered quality recruits. To be fair most are still young

Of course there will be misses and inappropriately rated prospects. It happens all the time.

But when you have that many, and QBs that transfer out have nice careers, couldn't we be that common denominator?

Grayson has improved more than any other QB on this roster.

From year one to now..

Completely different player.

Also I would like to point out that Kaitlyn was the reason I stopped watching mix tapes. I fell for that one hook line and sinker. His was so good. I thought we were getting a JJ Redick-Jason Williams hybrid, with swag to boot.

Do the people still say swag?

I don't.

I think 'savage' is the term now.

I have a hard time keeping up..
Funny ... I remember interviewing a key UNLV player, an impact runner... name is eluding me... before the trip at Arkansas in 2001. He used the word savages to describe how they were heading into Fayetteville. I thought nothing of it, it was a good quote... Robinson saw it out there and flipped out (felt the quote was strong bulletin board material) ... who was that kid...

Jabari Johnson?
Dominic Dorsey?
Joe Haro?

Most players that suck ride the pine or don't make the team. Its a strange occurrence when you get a player that sees consistent time getting meaningful minutes and they dont just not produce, but they are an unmitigated disaster. That has to mean the coach is seeing something in practice - or the player has serious dirt on the coach LOL

or CTS has a love child that plays starting QB at UNLV.

I remember one of the assistants talking to us at practice. "He didn't really say that, now did he?" One of those wink-wink scenarios.
