The rich going to get richer.

In a 14 team playoff the BIG and SEC get 4 bids each. ACC & Big12 get 2 each, G5 gets one and one wildcard guaranteed to ND if ranked in top 14.

In a 16 team playoff it’s the same format but add 2 more wildcards, which would go to the 15th and 16th ranked schools.

A lot of other stuff in the article like SEC finally may go to 9 league games, each BIG and SEC school may play one game against each other every year, payouts and what may become of conference championship games.

Unless we manage to find our way into a P conference, I am OK with 1 G5 spot and up to 3 at large spots. Some years those at large spots will be filled with G programs. No matter where it goes, it will always be a big stroke off to the B1G and SEC but as long as we have a lane I am good with it. I personally think we have more of a chance at a playoff spot in the MWC than we would anywhere else, really.

So weird to be talking about having a legitimate chance to participate in something like this, we were eons away just three years ago and now we are on the brink of it and it’s not really an expectation (yet), but it is a reachable goal.

Because our NIL is better than our closest peers, because UNLV hired (an apparent) high quality staff, because of UNLV’s very recent history and because of the way the G5 conference stuff is shaping up … UNLV should be in the conversation for that slot(s) nearly every year.

It’s mind boggling to think how far we’ve come, just as mind boggling as how far we’ve fallen with football.

I agree with all of this. The only issue is fan interest in the MWC. Playing as a G5 creates an easier path to the playoff by being the best G5 rather than trying to be top 2 in B12, however that means playing a lot of games against schools no one cares about in a complete garbage conference. As a fan I’d rather play a better schedule and hope it helps recruiting, brings in more $$ and try and compete for one of the 2 auto bids and wildcard spots.

I have zero interest in watching UNLV play anyone in the new MWC, but play some games vs B12 schools and I’ll tune in.

I look at it as a stepping stone. As a true G5 our ceiling will be extremely low. THe chances of winning in the Playoffs at all will be very low. Maybe one game which would be a huge accomplishment.

But getting into the Playoff as a G5, especially more than once, and earning a higher seed than say a B12 or ACC school, will get the P4's attention.

Getting into the Big 12 opens up significantly more doors. The ceiling raises significantly, though not really as a true championship contender, but perhaps a final 4 contender. Of course the road through the Big 12 will be tougher, though at least recent history makes it seem like raising through the ranks in the B12 doesn't seem so insurmountable, especially if we can hold on to Mullen.

To me, just making it is the cbb equivalent of a Cinderella S16. Winning a single game would be similar to making the FF. A huge deal, highly improbable.

Yeah it's just our current reality, I don't see any G schools playing great conference schedules. A better OOC schedule will balance that out, but we're probably now in the territory of programs the top power conf teams won't want to touch with a 10 foot pole. The ace in the hole we have is an awesome away game in Vegas for their fans ala Syracuse, so perhaps we can reel some big fish in with that.

With 4 auto bids for the BIG/SEC I hope it means schools (looking at you SEC) are willing to take some away games that they wouldnt in the past. This year OSU won the NC with 2 losses and there were four 3 loss teams in the top 16 final pre playoff rankings.

Initially the read to me is "why would we play those games now that we don't need them"

But then a reading could be "why wouldn't we play those games now that they won't matter if we lose"

Getting too bloated. I get it, it is a money making machine. It has helped the NCAAT by expansion.
But I don't like it. If it gets to 16, they need 2 G5 representatives
that would be nice, and it is possible, but the powers that be would rather 0 G5 schools than 2, I'm pretty sure

Your initial thought probably is right, especially since it appears the SEC will play 9 games in conference same as the BIG and then if it comes to fruition that each will play one game against each other thats 10 games leaving 2 to be home games against Louisiana Monroe and Florida A&M.

You're probably right and itll remain that way till a G5 school knocks off and makes a run in the CFP. Its like when Boise won the Fiesta Bowl, it was cool and all for the BCS busters but then that never materialized into anything more for the G5s. There was never a legit shot at a National title.

Only way to get the SEC and BIG10 to stop crying is expand the football playoffs to 38 teams letting every sec and big10 team in leaving 4 spots one for the Big 12 one for the ACC one for a G5 and one for an at large. Or maybe just have 34 spots and only the sec and big10 get teams in.

That would be sweet for the lawyers. Collusion would speed up the lawsuits that are sure to come in the future!
