What are you hoping to hear from the coach? Harp? The Press?
Style of Play:
* Up tempo, high hustle 'commitment to energy"
Goals for the team:
* Unclear, said 'win and compete for championships, make the tournament' but that sounded more like program goals not next years from context. Did say We want to win now, and got a small round of applause for it.
Recruiting
* Only tangentially mentioned 'Recruiting at a high level'
These are always everyone saying what they think you want to hear. I like the talk of energy, hustle, and intensity--because I don't think that has been the product under Kevin Kruger. Understands the history and the fracture with the players it seem like, said that and community outreach were some of his primary goals. Not a lot of specifics, but I didn't really expect it. Also, I had thought that there would be a press pit Q&A, but it sounds like it's all individual media interviews.

I'd be the worst press conference coach ever.
Style of Play - whatever works the best for the players we got.
Goals - score more points than the other team. Win more games than the other teams in MWC.
Recruiting - try to get the best guys we can get.
Night and day between Pastner and the previous HC.
High energy and ready to get to work. He’s going to be a good one and based off the presser, a perfect fit for Las Vegas. I especially liked his comments about his Arizona days and giving a nod to the UNLV vs Arizona rivalry, he understands what UNLV is based on his time with Lute and the recruiting battles we’ve had.
Another comment to display and highlight his ties to the area, he recruited a lot in Las Vegas and is very familiar with Lindy La Rocque and her dad. If you know her dad, then you know a lot of local coaches as well.
In summary, his energy and enthusiasm is contagious. That will sell with recruits and donors, he will pull them in and bring back the fans. Im fact, I’m considering going to games next season, and I haven’t been to a unlv basketball game in years. The program has been in a coma for years and being led by guys with the personality of a librarian and not a basketball coach.

What a breath of fresh air after listening to Kruger for the last 4 years.
That definitely comes up a lot...historically not his style either.
Seems like more people are warming up to the idea of Pastner after hearing him speak. Thank god because we cant have too many of those "diehard" emotional fans who think they are insiders and podcasters!
Its almost as if he checked a lot of the boxes that we needed!
I like a bunch of things he said but talk is cheap. Leta now see him put into action what he says
Agree that talk is cheap but the man needs to say something. We need to hear some sort of plan so know that he at least has a vision. Just something, unlike someone named KK that we know.
I do like that he actually wanted the job. I am sure the minute a school comes in offering a huge contract a new dream job will magically emerge, but has wanted it before reportedly so something to say for that.
How have the basketball press conferences been lately versus this one? Was this one a little more energetic versus the monotone responses from before?

I think Beard’s was a little bit awkward. He might have already heard from his next destination plus at that time the regents were still screwing things up & not approving the contract.
Beard also made up that story about meeting Tarkanian in a pickup truck or something like that. Very bizarre day.
Pastner comes on around the 14 minute mark, starts talking about hoops around 15
He probably read an old story about Melvin Dummar and thought it sounded good.
I must have tuned in after the "Officer in Charge" spoke. Was he well spoken or am I missing the sarcasm?
No he was pretty good. Seems to be accountable for the administration's responsibility to athletics.
An introduction press conference is pass/fail. No one should read into it that a guy is bound to be a success and make UNLV a winner again. At the same time, if you have the personality of a trout, can't talk in public, and seem fake...it's certainly not a good omen.
I should have said coaches' interviews in general, not introductory press conferences.
My point was that he has some charisma and energy. That was lacking prior.
this is different situation..this is actual hire. not a desperation grab mm and a consolation kk here you take over the program after coaches fleeing. Although nobodys first choice i easily give coach pastner a chance. Harpers new must be an announcer checklist to be hired i guess.. i just want see who he starts snagging out of the portal..

A lot of similarities with Mullen as far as being excited and seeing potential in the program.
Agreed. He also seems to have the persona that will work better in the Vegas market. Hopefully he can reel in more community support with NIL and filling the T&M

All coaches give a decent presser. Except of course Kevin who I think didnt say anything about winning.
That said, and Im certainly liking the energy and the things he is saying, I will reserve judgement on the hire until its February and we are playing a meaningful basketball game.
