Pac 12 Official statement on expansion

I wonder if UCAL will Honor our Home and Home scheduled games for '24 & '25? Or with their New found Money will they just buy us out.

My guess is that both the big 12 and the PAC will attempt to pickoff the best what’s remaining from the other first. PAC has a better collection of schools top to bottom (assuming Oregon and Washington aren’t invited to the B1G). So my guess is that the PAC would try to get to 16 and invite Kansas, K State, Baylor, Tex Tech, Ok St and maybe BYU or TCU. Big 12 at that point would probably try and take the best of the MWC or see if they could get all 3 acadamies or something and make the best of what’s left. Could make an argument for UNLV, but even if they get invited the BIG 12 would basically be only a slightly better version of the MWC. Like the MWC before Utah and TCU bolted.

I think they’ll keep it unless a PAC team wants to add them as a Non-Conference game. With 4 or 5 games across the country already I think UCLA will like having a close west coast game most years. I’m sure eventually the Arizona and California schools will take these games but maybe they’ll have some bad blood about being left behind at first. I’d try to extend that UCLA series if possible.

Talk locally (In Big 12 country) is that the PAC and Big 12 may merge. Not all teams may make the cut.

It looks like Colorado and Utah has reached out to joint the Big 12. Also the Arizona schools.

People here think that the Big 12 are in a better position than the Pac right now, and it is hard to argue against that.

UNLV may be on the outside looking in. The silver lining to that is that there may be a few leftover power schools that a general upgrade is possible, whether that be joining a lower tier PAC or boosting the current MW.

It is by far better for UNLV that the Pac12 and Big12 delay bringing in new schools until UNLV has the chance to turn things around this next season! Keep winning 4 or less games and most likely UNLV is screwed, but if UNLV can find a way to have a winning season, that can go a long way towards making UNLV a prime target!

Hey guys - wazzu fan here. Pulling for you guys and SDSU to get an invite to the Pac-12. I think your school, your location, propped up in a bigger conference for money and exposure, could be a great program in both football and basketball.
Thanks ttown. How are you guys feeling out there? Pretty weird time in the college sports environment.

Back when the big 12 was experiencing realignment (2010 -2012 or so) Baylor, who had been a conference doormat, realize they had to do something or they were going to be left out in the cold. They started cheating their asses off. They didn't really have the money to buy recruits so they started heavily into steroids and taking any player regardless of their background. They turn their program around big time in terms of winning.

It later imploded because of all the badness and rape cover up etc. But mission accomplished they never were left out.

I'm not saying I advocate that for UNLV... But hey, it's an option 😆

Big12 only slightly better than the MWC? C'mon...what on Earth are you basing that upon?
If you’re referring to what I said (and LOCO quoting it), you’d have read my entire post for context.

Short version.
-Thought remaining PAC schools was a better collection of schools than the the BIG 12

-As a result, thought the PAC could grab the best 4-6 BIG 12 schools (OkSt, Baylor, etc)

-Big 12 would then fill in with MWC schools (possibly UNLV Among them). If that were the case, that Big 12 would only be slightly better than current MWC

A lot has happened since then. Looked like Big 12 perhaps had upper hand do to stability. Now appears eveyone is going to let the dust settle first. Obviously wasn’t referring to current big 12 when i said that.

I don’t think we’ve ever played each other in football or basketball.

I'm in the Seattle area. Other than the shock and anger of the LA schools decisions, most of us feel like the conference is going stay in tact. The geographic rivalries and cultural nuances of each state/region make the conference what it is.

Reality is locally, Cougs basically share the Seattle market with UW, college football wise. Basketball is more diluted to to Gonzaga's success. UW is obviously the first draw in football, but w/ the amount alums here, family connections and relationships each school have with each other, it keeps the region engaged on what each team is doing. Some of the Pac-12's charm has been parity and anything can happen on any Saturday. Nationally, they say it's a weakness. Locally, and on TV, it makes for entertaining games.

Both LA schools have ALWAYS been high maintenance, more so USC. The move by USC is not shocking. They have been thinking of being independent for years. Many of us believe they will be short-term happy with the money, but the travel and loss of their competitive edge due to a tougher schedule may having them rethink things in a few years.

Again, I am hoping UNLV gets in. I really think both your programs are sleeping giants. If you get more cash from the PAC, you can upgrade your coaching staff, facilities, etc. Vegas is going to benefit from this exposure as well.

TY for the words of support! Ironically, working against inclusion is Vegas itself (not intentionally). PAC-12 already holds its championship here (as do other conferences). Would the PAC schools be ok with a championship game at the home stadium of a conference member? If not the PAC-12 would need to recoup that lost revenue in another city which will be tough to do since it is hard to find a more lucrative site than Vegas. Our gaming/resort industry would also not be happy losing the PAC-12 championship so UNLV would need to convince them that they will make more $$ with the regular season conference games and other benefits of PAC membership. Tough sell all around even with interest from the PAC-12.

Wait, they are the team in red. Yeah, they played us at Sam Boyd. I was at the game. I remember one of our trashy fans was trying to start a fight with some WSU girls as they walked by. I felt bad.

they beat us pretty easily.

It’s why I keep harping the coaches we have, need to turn things around ASAP! Arroyo needs to put it together or look real close this year or else! And as much as I am okay with Kevin in hoops, we need to have some kind of tournament run this year, NIT or NCAA, but something this year. There is too much at stake with realignment going on to keep punting on entire seasons with minimal improvement. Football needs to have a season, this year not next because next year might be too late!

Agreed. FSU brings no appeal to the Conf and little in potential future growth. Suspect internal PAC politics of CA members wanting to replace UCLA/USC with two CA schools. SMU makes sense except for distance. CO State would be a better selection than FSU; adds in-state rivalry with the Buffalos. UNLV needs LVCVA to get on board and cut a deal for some revenue sharing of stadium proceeds for an initial period to sweeten the pot. That all said, I can’t imagine the PAC stops at SDSU & FSU/SMU. That doesn’t come close to replacing what they lost. There aren’t two schools they can get that can replace UCLA/USC; only way to do that is expand beyond 12 members and create a larger, more dynamic conference by adding select schools/markets. That’s where UNLV is an obvious choice, despite our FB & MBB underperforming.

Berkeley doesn’t excite Berkeley fans.

Does Stanford athletics excite anyone?

The other two I can see being desired.
I was thinking the same thing. The first 2 schools, however, do have great academics and very good olympic sports, so who knows.
