The only gaming company that has truly stepped up consistently is Boyd Gaming… Sam Boyd Stadium, Boyd Law School, BlackFire Institute, T&M Scoreboard, numerous others that go unreported. Ironically Bill Boyd is a UNR alum (I don’t think UNLV existed when he went to college).
In distant second is MGM, but given the size of MGM it really hasn’t stepped up and adopted the school like it could. I’m still hoping that happens under Bill Hornbuckle’s leadership (he’s the current CEO). Hornbuckle is a UNLV alum (Hotel College).
i agree with you, just not on the statement that Alabama cant match the ceiling. Should have made that more clear.
I am impartial to the Boyd's company. My father worked for them as a janitor until he passed. That company is all class. We always bowl at Sam's Town and eat buffet there every Friday. Sea food day. Crawfish is all you can eat. My grandma love it. Love the Boyd's people.
How good is the UA job if the coach left UW? After they lost a ton of talent. Better than UNLV but if he waits a year and has a great year his name will be attached to a lot better jobs than UA.
It’s like the 27th best job in the Big 12.
UW job is top 20 UA is probably 50 UNLV 90ish

I posted the Palms NIL deal. Pretty creative way to involve the casinos.
But I'm sure there are some hoops to jump through to get them involved.
We saw Utah do the car lease thing. That's not an option here obviously.
But, what can a casino offer?
They can do a 'pledge this much to UNLV athletics enter a drawing to win X' type scenario. Get people down to the casino. But that would only attract locals really.
It's not like they can offer free rooms or free spins on the Mega Bucks to recruits.
I hope UNLV/casinos can come up with similar plans like the one with The Palms. I just don't think it's as easy as assuming they will or that other casinos will see any benefit to it.
Alabama or UNLV?
Until our athletic budget matches Alabama or UNLV and casinos can work out absolutely massive NIL partnerships it's really not even a discussion.
UNLV has a long long way to go just to match some lower/mid range P4 schools much less Alabama.
Why leave a G5 school that you have upgraded talent for and will be competing for that playoff spot for a big 12 school whose roster is about to be devoured?

Coach Odom doesn't come across as a guy who lives a lavish life style.
When you're talking about doubling a seven figure salary you're talking about setting your kids up for life.
Say you took the additional 1.5 million each year for three years threw it into an investment getting you just 5% interest, in ten years that 4.5 million turns into almost 7.5 million dollars.
I don't think that's what motivates him..But man that's a lot of cheddar.

The type of money Odom is making, and factoring in raises, he will already have more than enough money to set his kids up for life with an extension of his contract. The big questions will be does he want to turn UNLV into a top level program before leaving, does he have any desire to stay long term at UNLV, or does he want to show enough to be able to get to a top level program? Personally I think he will be here at least another year or two, and I hope it will be much longer than that.
Not disagreeing with that in the slightest. Like I said I don't think he's motivated by money.
Just pointing out that's a lot of money to leave on the table.

Sometimes winning overtakes money. Quality of life plays a huge role. You can have all the money in the world and not be happy but if you’re successful and winning that’s what brings joy and happiness. This team is going to be really REALLY good next year
If we're talking $250,000 to $500,000 difference then perhaps other things will overcome money. But beyond that, and certainly as you approach $ 1,000,000 or more per year, that makes a huge difference to your families legacy. Any thing can happen to a coach to affect his current position. If the money is there I believe you have to get it.

Quality of life is huge. Family being happy where they are vs relocating another huge factor. Enjoying the place you work massive.
I'm just reluctant to look at 1.5 million dollars as chicken feed and not something that could motivate somebody (not necessarily Coach Odom) to consider a job.
I agree this team could be very good next year. In fact it should be very good next year.
I'm still not enamored with the possibility that the Campbell transfer could be the #1 heading into Spring by default because there may not be any experienced QBs to challenge.
Other than that positions of need have definitely been upgraded.
Defense should be significantly better.
Offense has potential to be explosive but the the QB situation as it is right now isn't ideal.

There is only so much money you need. I have worked for myself for a long time, and when I got to the point I was comfortable, I cut back to working a limited number of hours, and started turning away about half the projects I was offered, because the quality of my life became more important than the additional money.
He’s not Arizona’s first choice and Odom seems like the type that will wait for a Lon/Oklahoma type situation. If he can deliver on a championship and playoff appearance, whatever Arizona hypothetically offers now will be peanuts for him AND his staff.
What you feel you need and what others feel they need could be different.
I went through the same thing with my job. I got to the point the money I made was great but I had little time to enjoy it. It put me in a great place financially now, hindsight what it is, I kind of wish I had some of those years back.

Turning down a 'promotion' does carry some inherent risk.
I'm in the camp that thinks he's being honest when he says he wants to build something here, and it would take the perfect scenario for him to bolt.
I totally agree with what you are saying. What I did make sure of was to keep my company going so that I always had a cash stream, and in the case I need more money, I just would accept additional jobs.
Many of the college football coaches are only driven by how much they can make, but there are also those who want to make a good living and be happy with where they are without the need to move on. A very good example of that was Chris Ault who on and off was the coach for unr from 1976-2012 with two periods of retirement within that time frame. No doubt he could have moved on and made a lot more money, but he was more than happy with what he had in Reno.
I just hope Odom is more like Christ Ault and less like Jimbo Fisher.
I would put UW a bit lower but the rest sounds about right so why take a 50 job when you get one of those 20 jobs with a great year.

It’s going to take a special offer to lure him out of Vegas but to your point about building a strong program, I am of the opinion that Odom has been planning this thing since (2019) he was interviewed the first time around by DRF and later on dropped in on the facilities unannounced under the Arroyo regime.
I think Odom and Harper were always discussing the state of the program long before Arroyo was canned. Hence why Harper pulled the trigger right after the Reno win. Odom has a vision and a plan and isn’t going anywhere unless someone offers a crazy contract.

When did he interview? During Sanchez search? That was TKM.
I thought he said in his presser he was in Vegas recruiting and then told the story about 'sneaking' into facility. Went on to say he loved the potential he saw with the program.
I know Scalley, Gonzales and Arroyo were all targets after Sanchez.
Anyway, to your greater point I 100% think it will take the right situation to lure him away. I don't think he jumps at just any P4 job.
That's why I wasn't worried about a school like Indiana opening. A school like Washington comes knocking? Yeah I start to sweat, because you can win at a high level there.
They were two separate incidents. He was considered when the job was open in 2019, I believe that was when Odom was weighing a bunch of offers. Took the Arkansas job and was out here recruiting sometime 2021 or 2022 to see the facility.

Or was he interviewed in Sanchez' 4th year when rumors started that Sanchez' seat was getting hot and he and DRF didn't get along?

Arroyo was hired in December of 2019, not 2020. Odom was in consideration with Arroyo, Aranda etc.

I know Scalley was very much in the mix but there was an issue with money for assistants. Gonzales was also in play.
Never heard Odom ever mentioned.
Yes it is a chance but I bet he believes in himself and taking the job has its risks too how many coaches have they mowed through in those two AZ jobs.

One thing regarding his salary: This isn't the first time he's been a high earner. This level of money isn't new to him. If he and his wife handle money well then, they shouldn't need to chase a higher salary. They could have been investing this entire time and have enough to live off the annual distributions and capital gains for the rest of their lives (depending on their age, the account types they are invested in hypothetically, etc.).
In 3...2...1... @reagan21 will jump in and ask if I'm trying to sell Coach Odom a whole life insurance product.
While he was a head coach before, which I am sure came with a big check, his job as an assistant coach paid more than what he is making now. He doesn't seem like the type that would run out and throw his money away.
