Not Texas Tech!

If Beard was so put off by the Regents, he could have turned down the job. Instead he accepted the job, then absconded when he got a better offer from TTU. Not blaming him for leaving for the TTU job, but his leaving had nothing to do with the ineptitude of the Regents.

You’ve got to be kidding me!

Did you not watch that “trial” he had to participate in? First, they were in no rush to actually hold a meeting to approve or deny his contract. This cost he, and UNLV, valuable recruiting time.

Second, the regents wanted all the FaceTime they could muster in voicing their opinions regarding his $1M/year contract. I know that’s excellent money but that’s not exactly giving the house away to a D1 Head Coach.

The regents made this about them and delayed the process so as to hinder any coach in his first season. It’s not a coincidence that this was promptly changed after the embarrassment that this became on a national level.

So, while you want to bury your head in the sand and say it had nothing to do with the regents, I’ll argue that it had a TON to do with them and the process he went through. Would he have left for TTU anyway? Probably. Was it 99.999% certain after that process? 100%!

I was irked when he left the way he did but after time, I can’t blame him. It’s like breaking-off an engagement once you learn your soon-to-be family, in-laws and neighbors are all straight out of Deliverance. The regent circus was the final straw; he ran for the hills before tkm made him squeal like a pig.

Good way to put it.

The argument against that is he SHOULD have known; it's not like UNLV being an administrative and auxilliary joke since the days of Tark is a well kept secret.

Tark was an anomaly, UNLV is what it is and always has been.... Tark was a unique guy, very special - he was able to chop his way through all the BS that is UNLV. Nobody else has and UNLV remains what it always was, aside from Tark.

Joel played less defense than anyone. Can’t see why Bird would want him. He can score, yeah, but his teams are all defense.

Maybe he could teach him. Mm couldn’t.

Maybe he got some advice that his defense stinks and he won't get a look from the nba without improving it? Otherwise it doesn't make sense to sit out a year and then hope that the hottest coach in the country doesn't land a 5-star player at his position during that time. I wish he would've stayed but good luck to him.

I totally agree. It was embarrassing to watch. I’m glad they changed it.

It did play a role.

All you need to do is look at TCU, which was alway a floormat prior to leaving the MWC, and you can see why it is important for UNLV to get into a major conference for athletics. The new football stadium is key to moving out of the MWC along with an improvement in the basketball program and football program records to make UNLV more desirable!

Doesn’t really bother me which school gets him as long as we don’t play that school during the season. Sucks that he is gone, but to me it would have sucked just as much if it was another school.

TCU had two things UNLV doesn't - money and football success. Ditto Utah. It has to be and should have been UNLV's primary goal for decades.... a concerted effort, some unity, some continuity at some point... they'd have all helped.

I am not comparing football, I was comparing the fact that TCU really sucked in basketball, and how much things quickly changed once they got into a major conference. In regards to what UNLV does have is much better football and basketball facilities (once the football stadium is completed), a much larger city in regards to potential TV contracts for a major conference, and the fact that Las Vegas is a very desirable place to play both football and basketball games. The recent upgrade for future football games already shows that with the right facilities UNLV will be able to attract top level programs to play home and home games, and basketball has never had an issue with attracting major programs.
