Mountain West Football Power Rankings 2025

I don't follow college football enough so why would Boise be the favorite and potential top 10 team after losing Jeanty?
Good question!

We really need to “put a foot” to their backside this year and every year going forward to get out of the Boise State shadow!

I have a feeling Jeanty is going to end up being to Spencer Danielson what Tom Brady was to Bill Belichick. and BSU is going to take a big step backwards like the patriots did.

Let’s hope so..

I dont think theres a prayer they are better in 2025 than they were in 2024. Without Jeanty, I'm not convinced Danielson has the chops.

They should still be expected to be best team in this league, but not gonna be top 10

Edit: years are tough to remember.

They recruited pretty well not a ton of defection and while Jeanty was amazing and will be tough to replace his production, Boise still has a lot of talent. They'll be good again next season.

It’s time for this to change, now’s the time and this is the team to take the MWC crown!
I don't mind losing to a Jeanty type of player. I do mind losing to Madsen, who was basically the player that beat us in both games last year and will likely be selling life insurance in 3 years. Same thing with McCord, but he may have a decent NFL backup career. I really liked Sherer but he couldn't figure out the Temu Baker Mayfield QB who just fires off 3-5 yard passes.

I think theres a good chance theyre top 20 when we play them in October.

Madsen is pretty sold, and they got Gaines at RB. Should be a solid opportunity

Some people talk like BSU was mediocre before Jeanty and that's where they'll go back to. Ashton was a generational talent at this level, no question. Heck, he broke Cedric Minter's BSU rushing records that had stood since the late 70's, and Minter never made the NFL, though he was pretty good in the CFL for years. Anyway, back to now.... Gaines got hurt early last season vs Oregon, missed a couple games, tried it again vs Portland St, aggravated it, then was shut down for the season. They thought maybe he'd be able to play vs Penn St, but didn't. They said he was gonna participate in Spring, but didn't. At this point, he's Henry Buckley. They will very much be RB by committee. Malik Sherrod, transfer from Fresneck, made a strong case in the spring.

WR room is pretty shaky. Cam Camper, last year's leader, is in Jags camp. Prince Strachan was expected to be a leader, but he transferred to USC. Latrell Caples is pretty good. They are very young and don't have a deep threat. Chris Marshall is their X-factor, but he's like Gaines, lotsa talent, can't get on the field. Lots of opportunity for the young guys, although the staff is beating the bushes for a more "mature" WR to add to the mix. TE Matt Lauter is an NFL talent.

They have a veteran OL, which is good for them because if Madsen gets hurt they will be in deep doo doo. Outside of Maddux, I think there might be a total of one CFB pass thrown in that room.

The defense has some good pieces, but LB Simpson was gonna play a big role and he portaled, eventually landing with Bill & Jordon at UNC. Their all-time leading kicker, Dalmas, graduated, and their punter, Ferguson-Reynolds, took his 43-yard avg to Oregon. Special teams, which cost them the Oregon game, will be an adventure, even moreso than last year.

Putting all this together, I'd say the Broncos have their work cut out for them. Don't know if they're Top 20, but don't think so until they earn it. If they can go into South Bend no worse than 4-1 maybe they won't embarrass themselves. They have a lot of questions to answer. For the most part, though, they always seem to get things worked out and be good. If our enthusiasm for the Fighting Mullens is born out, this may very well be the year the streak ends.

We have a lot of unknowns as well on both sides of the ball and in key positions. I’m really interested in seeing how this team performs. Expecting some shakiness early in the season and just hope we don’t drop a game that makes it impossible for us to catch up and be positioned for MWCC and a CFO spot.

I think Madsen is really good actually.

Youre right about Sherrod though. I don't see Boise losing to anyteam besides Notre Dame on their schedule though, including probably us, but you never know until you play the game.

Im interested to see how good Danielson is as a HC, this year will be an interesting test. Also they just have brand power, having been in the CFP last year, so I can see them getting the benefit of the doubt and being ranked pretty fast.

I even think that ND game is winnable, ND is vulnerable to dumb losses.

For the Rebels I feel like that Sam Houston game is going to tell us a ton. First games are always a a little wonky, I'm worried about dropping that one, even though Sam Houston ain't good

Sam Houston was pretty good last season. They went 10-3 and won their bowl game 31-26 vs Georgia Southern. On the season, Sam Houston lost @ UCF, vs W. Kentucky, and @ Jacksonville State. They also beat Rice, Hawaii, Texas State, Utep and Liberty.

I have no ideas what they've added or lost in terms of graduation, portal, etc, but I'm not expecting them to be a push over by any means.

".....UCF, vs W. Kentucky, and @ Jacksonville State....."

Jacksonville State brings back fond memories for me. For about 8 years I lived a few miles from their stadium. Had season tickets. Their games were super fun. 25,000 seat stadium filled to the brim. They had a gigantic band ( nearly 200 ) and I think half the fans were there just to see them. Football in the south is just different. For a few years while I attended their games their coach was Jack Crowe. He was doing well - not Nat. Champs but records like 7-4, 8-3. Well, he was fired and I thought it was weird because he was winning. But rumor had it a few prominent booster families sitting behind the bench took offense at him calling a player a "stupid ****". You gotta love the South.

Head Coach left to take the Temple job. Lost quite a few dudes on the defensive side of the ball in the portal.

Sam Houston is a very good program. Kind of worried about that one being the first out of the gate.

I didn't know that. Yeah, that will have an impact for sure. Though I'd imagine whoever they brought in will try to bring in some of his guys also.

Looking into it now, they hired Phil Longo, who has been the OC for Ole Miss, UNC and Wisconsin over the past 7 years. It'll be interesting to see if he can bring some players from those previous programs or not.

ND did drop a game to NIU of all teams.

I know nothing about Longo and hadnt heard his name until Nov when I was in Madison for the Oregon vs Wisconsin game and the UW fans were not happy with him at all yelling fire Longo etc. If Im not mistaken he was fired the next day.

I have a dog I’m training named @Bullmastiff 1 . I’ll allow him to clear this up for you if we can get him to talk. Just don’t expect 7 paragraph essays from him anymore, though. He gets swatted with a newspaper when he does that now.

No, not at all. Knowing you are are now involving other people in other threads while discussing irrational behavior is one of the funnier self owns I've ever witnessed.

Rent free..As I said.
For me to involve someone, I’d have to bring them into it. @Couev inserted himself and I think you know that. Don’t be obtuse.

Fantastic to-the-point post btw. I’m really blown away by how fast you improved.

You jumped into a rebswin post about football and brought up our little back and forth. So yes that is involving other people.

But do continue...
