More money from media rights deal

So Fox Sports and CBS Sports now. No more ESPN games. I'm surprised ESPN didn't want any more MWC games. I guess they'll be showing PAC12, BYU, and Boise for their late night games.

I like the FS1 channel but I wish we had something going with ESPN still. Even though UNLV Football was only getting an occasional ESPN 2 or ESPN U game. I liked those more than cbssports.

I guess the bump in pay is good but damn the American (AAC) is making double the MWC just from ESPN.

That is because top to bottom the AAC is currently a better product. If UNLV starts to win, that will change the game.

No argument from me about that. The AAC is clearly better than the MWC but the difference in pay is a pretty sizable amount considering they have some dregs as well (Tulane, Tulsa, ECU).

AAC - 83 million per year
MWC - 35 million per year + Boise State home games

Worth noting that AAC pays production costs to air their non football and basketball games. Not that it's like $30 mil, but each school probably gives up $1-1.5m in production costs of their deal.

Once again Thompson getting out worked by the rest of the group of 5 commissioners. He should have been relieved of his duties as MWC Commish a long time ago !
I agree with the first part, he’s been awful.

But our product is lower than theirs. Simple supply and demand too. The intensity of one’s passion doesn’t matter, it’s the number of people with enough passion that matter.

More TV details were released today. MWC did better than what was originally reported.

6 years = $270 million

23 Football games on CBS/CBSSports
16-23 Football games on Fox/ FS1 / FS2

For the basketball fans it sounds like MWC games will be on TV most nights of the week now that FS1 / FS2 have some rights.

Not Bad but, I believe someone other than Thompson could have done better. He Need to Go ASAP he's over stayed his Welcome !!!

I with it had been cbs sports going away and not ESPN. I hate that cbs sports is so unwilling to offer streaming.

Either way, this should be so beneficial to these schools. Maybe next cycle, some more established coaches will be in the mix for upcoming head jobs available. Normally exposure would be key,but most of this conference is just narrowly getting by....

The deal still kisses the ass of BSU football with a special deal that pays them significantly better than the rest of the conference. Considering the new stadium will be a huge selling point for games on TV, that is BS, and another reason to get out of the MWC.

I get it, but BSU is the flagship program right now. Conference is going to cater to them to some degree.

The new stadium will be a big selling point for conference title games. But overall more people aren't going to tune in to UNLV football games until they start winning.

I will bet that the UNLV verse Cal game in the new stadium has a bigger crowd and more viewers than any other MWC game of the year in a MWC stadium! Then it will be up to the team to win games to keep people coming to game and keep up the excitement!

Possible. Boise has a return date with FSU, which will pull in some ratings.

The Cal game should have the highest attendance of the year. If not the UNLV marketing people should be fired. It shouldn't be that hard to drum up a ton of excitement for that one game unless they try to price gouge. As the season goes on and losses mount attendance will drop but there's no reason that first game shouldn't come close to a UNLV attendance record.

The new contract guarantees at least 3 games on CBS. This is one of the most surprising things about this deal. Those 3 games (no matter who's playing) will have the most viewers. CBSSports and FS1 will never have that type of viewership.

UNLV probably won't get a CBS game this year but if the program improves we could get more TV exposure than I ever thought was possible in the MWC.

I definitely agree with you... if the program improves.

Just to play devils advocate, UNLV especially FB could get less TV exposure than ever if they are bad. Let's hope for your scenario!!

The new contract does say there will be games on CBS Access. That is their streaming service.

I'm curious to see what we get on our 3rd tier rights. Stadium? AT&T? Facebook? Root? ESPN3/+?

Something to consider that I don’t think many have.

When the Raiders have a home game on Sunday and UNLV has one the day before on Saturday. That can certainly be an issue. It’s going to take time to flip the field and stadium, configurations and swapping the grass for the turf. My understanding is that it might take up to 16 hours for that change. So a 7pm Saturday game finishing at 1030 is going to be a huge problem for a 1pm day game.

Maybe that leads to Thursday or Friday night games, maybe it leads to a noon/1pm Saturday football game - but how much is already tied into a signed contract with the opponent? .... maybe things get worked out so that Raiders get the 5pm Sunday game or Monday night game. Or maybe the NFL tries to help out and schedule the Raiders on the road as much as they can when the Rebels have a home game. As far as I know, the Raiders have a lot more wiggle room to make sure conflict is minimized.

After seeing how upset the Raiders were about UNLV having 7 home games next year (including 3 in a row) I think it's an issue. You might not see many UNLV and Raider games on the same weekend. UNLV schedules the 2 OOC dates years in advance but I wouldn't be surprised if the 4 MWC games are done around the Raiders away schedule.

The reason for night games was due to the hot weather. As the season went on into the cooler weather UNLV played earlier. With the stadium it will be no issue to play all of the games in the daytime.

I am curious to the television deal for the opening game verse Cal? That game should have great national interest due to the new stadium, and is a great chance for UNLV football to sell itself and make new fans!

As for the Raiders being upset in regards to the number of home games, it is really hard to know how much of that news was real and not. I have seen numerous people saying UNLV wouldn't play the first 2 or 3 games in the new stadium, that they are 2-3 months behind on construction, and that they are having issues with the roof for the new stadium. I tend to believe those are mostly people making up fake stories who don't want the Raiders playing in Las Vegas.

I'm not trying to undersell the value of the stadium. I'm just not sure many people will tune into a UNLV game because of the stadium.

Outside of Vegas the only reason people know there is a new stadium is because of the Raiders.

I would venture to guess that many don't even know UNLV will be sharing the stadium.

To me, either don't do it at all, or double down on it. If we don't know well in advance how many games are on it, I'd rather not even be bothered, you know?

With the ESPN side, you knew almost any time UNLV was on The Family, it would be 3. But it was unlikely. Either way, your point is not lost on me. I would pay for standable CBS Sports. Not interested in CBS All Access until they commit to it as a viable platform (for sports). I'm not in the interest of Big Cable... so I can kiss that pipe dream goodbye lol

Agreed. I think the MWC will work with UNLV on this, but the OOC is going to be set contractually. Hopefully the Raiders/NFL can work around it.

This shit should have been finalized long ago though.

Boise State not happy with the MWC saying this will be the last time Boise State gets a favored distribution of TV money. They are now talking about moving on..

They leave and our dollars will be severely impacted. Stay tuned...

It would be a big loss for the MWC. Boise would likely go to what? Indy our AAC?

Who could MWC entice to replace them?

All the more reason UNLV absolutely has to go all in on making themselves as appealing a candidate as possible for P5 inclusion, or potentially move to another G5 conference.

So Boise went and sued the MWC. Sounds like they want an even bigger piece of the pie. I know they’re the biggest brand we have but seriously F these guys if they they want a bigger cut.

https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/College-Football.pdf
They don't want a bigger cut, they are saying the MWC hid material info from them when they voted on the TV deal. After the deal, and once the MWC told them this will be the last deal where they get preferential treatment, Boise State got butthurt and sued. The allegations in the complaint are pretty flimsy. I'm not sure what damages they sustained since they are actually receiving more money than they did before. The crux of this complaint is one for declaratory relief saying the "Re-Entry Agreement" is enforceable forever.

I was wondering about this. They did get more money with their agreement with ESPN. It was basically part of the package they agreed upon joining the MW in the first place.
First I thought that Fox was just going to take ESPN's place and fill a similar role/contract.

I guess not.

So I get why they may be pissed.

However, if they are truly getting more money than before, then that is petty. But I'm not sure that they do. We are only getting like what .9 mill more per year with this deal? I'm pretty sure they got more than that with their last deal. The got paid extra for all of their ESPN games, which was nearly every game.

Boise currently gets 1.8 million more than UNLV and the other MWC schools. I think they're asking for more.

"Because it lacked the required information on the CBS/Fox agreement's material terms and because the MWC, based on the alternatives it presented during the Board of Directors meeting, was not only trying to renege on its contractual obligation to pay Boise State the $1.8 million bonus, but also to deprive it of any proportionate share of the increased revenue generated by the CBS/Fox agreement even though Boise State was admittedly the driving force behind that agreement, Boise State (l) did not vote to approve or accept the CBS/Fox agreement; and (2) opposed the termination of the Re-Entry Agreement Amendment's $1.8 million bonus."

Simple fact is if this ends up being a forever deal, the best thing for the MWC would be to dissolve and start a new conference. With the improvements in the SDSU football program and what I believe will be a considerable improvement in UNLV football, I do not see a reason for us to stay as a second class citizen to BSU football like what Texas has done in the Big12.

Boise only cares about Boise. That is okay. The MWC should equally share all revenue so that we can all use our money to grow our programs. Obviously Boise doesn't give a rats ass about the rest of us. It's time to part ways. We will be fine and they will be fine. We will take a hit on the media deal but, its not like we've been earning a ton of money from it anyway.

Any other year UNLV didn't have new training facilities, a new stadium, and currently by far the highest rated class UNLV has ever been able to recruit.

Year average rating
2020 0.8255 Based on 14 recruits.

Currently the class is ranked 105th, but if you look at the number of current recruits, and the average rating, UNLV would currently be ranked around 81st with a full recruiting class. We would be ranked well in front of byu, and would only be ranked behind Boise in the MWC. This also doesn't include a highly rated transfer from TCU who is rated at 0.8666 - which would make him the second highest rated recruit of the class if his rating was included with the others.
