Mikey Williams

This is no longer about the student athlete it is all a business anymore. Hire the best option for the business. Dont care about squeeky clean. If the benefits outweight the costs and he can help take the next step forward then sign him and anyone else who fits into this description.

IMHO, don't take too much stock into his stats last year at UCF. It was a year for him to get back on the court and back into playing shape.
Sorry, I'm from the school you are what you have put on tape last. I'm not saying he doesn't have room for growth, but he also was getting fair minutes for 3 months and still was pretty inconsistent once he was getting starter minutes. I hope I'm wrong--unless he goes someplace else, then I hope I'm right haha.

On the fence... Tons of upside, but getting closer to home where his legal problem originated to me seems questionable. All for giving second chances with upside, just think him being further away from where his troubles originated might be better for these kids.

That said, we need to find talent and he has the potential to be that talent.. and if he can bring in other talent to play with him, so be it

I hate to say it but I agree with you 100% on this! Lol

This kid and the other UCF kids could get us back on track quickly, gotta close this deal/deals asap!

I think you take MIkey Williams if he wants to come here. He does have some upside. He did not get much burn until the end of the season--I'm not sure if that's because of injuries or whatever at UCF, I only saw them play once last year and I don't remember anything about him. But I think it's really important that we look at what he did last year and try to remember that he was playing in a better league than the MWC, but those stats don't lie. Without some big development he's not really a scorer or shot maker, and he's not a good defender. He's got really good athleticism and length for his size, and he's a great self-marketer and he also comes with some real baggage off the court, but if Pastner gets 10% more out of him he'll be a Brooklyn Hicks upgrade.

It's obvious why Mikey didn't get a lot of run at UCF. He was a freshmen playing behind senior Darius Johnson who was one of the top pg's in the Big 12. Darius Johnson finished the season averaging 17.4 ppg and was 5th in the Big 12 in scoring and shot .396 from 3 and .827 from the line and this was in the Big 12! Also, he finished 6th in the Big 12 at 4.3 apg. Further, Mikey had to compete with Dior Johnson for run at the pg spot and Dior was a 5 star and rated 15 in the nation by ESPN. UCF was loaded in the back court.

Sure we need talent, and I have no idea how much Tark is in Pastner in terms of keeping guys in check. He seems like a nice guy/ players coach, and not sure how much of a hard ass he can really be. Stephen also has a rep to the point that you at least worry about him off the court. I don't know if we really want a bunch of guys in Vegas that have a knack for getting in trouble. Hell our freaking DC may have had issues with this and is now gonzo.
Talent is nice, but it doesn't helped if they get suspended or are kicked off the team.

Especially if they're all young and flush with cash... Its not like weve signed 3 or 4 year vets looking for one solid year to get drafted.. Josh is absolutely building a base with the intent to have a year 2 squad that is uber talented with all these young transfers. But you have to get through year one and we have 0 veteran presence in the locker room right now to guide these young guys.

I don’t care how much talent some players have. I want guys who are coachable, give 100 percent always and fit in partners system.

The advanced metrics I used typically adjust for playing time. In fact, ORTG and DRTG will typically over-value a low minutes player over a starter. Raw stats are a terrible for predicting play, but the advanced metrics only take into consideration what he does when he's on the floor. Perhaps moving out of the BXII will improve his numbers, perhaps there was more rust on him than there should be after 3 months of getting minutes, perhaps he doesn't fit into the UCF's offensive philosophy, but what I think is that he's a low floor high ceiling risk that you're bringing in if you sign him. I have no issue with that, as that's what we have the budget for, but just because he was a 4 star recruit doesn't mean anything on the hardwood. Maybe he was overvalued playing in a mid-tier California division. San Ysidro is only Div III.

Hard data analysis tells me he's Brooklyn Hicks 2.0 with a higher ceiling and similar floor. If the staff can develop him, he obviously can be more than that, but given the data I hope nobody is counting on that.

Just because he had really good players in front of him doesn't mean he is necessarily that good either. And it's not like he is coming from Houston or Kansas. UCF is a bottom third B12 team, which is probably the same as a upper middle MW team.

It doesn't mean he is a scrub either. Obviously has some potential. Also honestly if Pastner really wants him and gets him, I will be happy. I do worry a bit about the off the court stuff.

This.

Talking about metrics this, metrics that. We all know Mikey can ball, there’s tape showing that. The question is, and it’s only for Pastner to know because he’s the one talking to him is if he’s coachable.

I think we will see a lot more effort throughout the entire season not just because Pastner is the coach, but also our teams base is going to be very young. We will probably have 7-10 guys who are underclassmen, which means they are playing for future NIL deals at their next stop. Yes, thats a cynical way to look at the effort levels, but I'm being honest about how the game works now. Looking at Sr transfers, they are on their last NIL pay day... If things arent going well theyre more likely to either mentally check out or play hero ball.

That’s a great point and explains how some guys probably phoned it in over the last couple years.

I believe that if someone wants to find trouble, theyll find it. Having Mikey in Vegas isnt any different than having Mikey in Memphis or Orlando. Theres hookers and blow and straps everywhere. Its a matter of if a player wants to lock in or not.
Like coach Arnett?
