I see there is a mini trend to hire nba assistants as head coach as it worked for byu. Any shot we would go that way?

It worked for BYU but you also have to take into account that BYU has 7 different billionaires that i know of and who knows how many millionaires that are donors. They have the money to play the NIL game with pretty much any team in the country. That goes a long way to making a coach look great. Not saying Young isnt a good coach but allot easier to coach when you can afford top players in the country

The average NBA assistant is making around $ 900,000. I think it would be hard to lure one away to deal with a G5 basketball program. Especially since they are on path to be an NBA head coach. NBA head coaches make between $ 7 mil and $ 15 mil annually. Why come here - probably get fired in 3-4 years and get completely off the NBA track.

I don’t think John Welch would excite many except for a portion of the old guard who know him personally since he was a former player.

Whoever we end up with will have a much easier time winning the MWC or tournament in 2026 with most of the schools we have trouble with leaving. But it will be a one bid league.
I could see it as a 2 bid league. Especially if UNLV can ever get semi decent in basketball again (I know that is a Big IF). But with Grand Canyon coming in, UNM, if UNR can get semi decent again then the MWC could be a two bid team league. But your right in that AF, Wyoming, Hawaii, UC Davis and SJSU wont bring any type of at large bid to the conference. UTEP I dont know about them either way. As it stands right now I agree MWC is a one bid league but I believe it has very good potential to become a 2 bid league maybe 3 bids on a good year.

It’ll basically be the old big west without the UNLV of hold. There were a few times they were multi-bid… ucsb usually but I think Utah state popped up later perhaps, NMSU, perhaps LBSU.

It’ll be a 2 bid league about half the time, I’d say. It’ll will encourage much stronger OOCs. We will see who has balls.

I dont think a single team that will be in the MWC will schecule a stronger OOC. UNM and UNR always schedule week. UNLV (with its current coach almost as bad as Menzies) avoids strong OOC games. The other schools just look for wins wherever they can find them and mostly against 300+ ranked teams. So that is a good point you brought up. That might keep the MWC as a 1 bid league most years

For the longest time, only SDSU has scheduled anywhere close to UNLV in terms of OOC SOS.

And UNM, one of the better remaining B-ball teams has notoriously scheduled easy.
