are going through some of the things that seemingly only afflicted the Rebels previously.
Losses bring out ugliness. Ugly losses make it worse and a string of them just bring out the worst in everything.
The root of the problem may differ but the result is the same. A collapse and underachieving. Seems like nobody is immune and it's hitting several teams all at once in conference. It hasn't hit UNLV profoundly (it has a little bit, I'll get to that), but it's something that certainly CAN happen again. We all hope not.
One root cause may be entitlement. That's what the claims in SD have been. Neal said it regarding the Lobos today. It hit Utah State, in a way, with Collette. To me, entitlement, simply put, is putting your own interest before the interest of the team. It's not buying in. It hit UNLV with Okonoboh and it will hit UNLV again; hopefully not until the end of the season. But we WILL see players that think they are getting shafted with playing time and they'll seek refuge elsewhere.
Colorado State appears to be a hot mess right now. There appears to be some massive disconnect between old school coaching styles and today's athletes. If you are a hardass as a coach, which I'm actually a fan of, then you BETTER have a specific type of kid because a lot simply will not respond and they'll revolt in their own way.
All these things tear the fabric of team chemistry to some degree. It can fracture an entire season. Even with the best coaches in the business, some of these scenarios may not be salvageable once it hits a certain point. You resort to crossing your fingers and praying as a fan.
I think coaching is getting more and more difficult. It's becoming less about the X's and O's and more about managing situations for most teams. Several factors are contributing... The number of transfers, social media breeding a sense of entitlement, mix tapes, instant gratification, etc.
Not every top prospect carries entitlement, so I don't want to paint with too broad of a brush, but I'd say the vast majority do. But it's leaking down to the less than prime prospects, too. Run of the mill players - players who are realistically role players (at least early in their careers) - are becoming more and more entitled. They think the school needs them more than they need the school.
Fingers are crossed that UNLV remains free of this nonsense that we see afflicting several conference mates. It'd be nice to avoid it for awhile. I think there's a pretty direct correlation between a lack of issues and success.
I guess I posted this now because several in conference are struggling at this very moment and we are starting to hear (at least tumors of) these issues.
