Looking forward to the next challenge

Utah will be a tough challenge. They are big and physical and have good guards. Best game in the non-conference schedule besides Arizona. There should be a big crowd for this one but I don't know if there will be given the turn out this year so far. Get there if you can!

Monday night was the first time I have seen this team get a little sloppy. It's time to up the level of competition. You can tell they were getting a little complacent especially on defense. When we played EWU it was a step up from what they had experienced in the exhibition game and game 1 and after the first 8-10 minutes they adjusted to the speed and intensity and pulled away.

We will have a definite adjustment to make in this game as well, more so than for EWU. Can't wait to see how the guys that were playing high school games and JC games last year adjust, This will be a major step up in competition but then again probably not as much as when we play Arizona but I fully expect this team to make that adjustment. The one to keep an eye on is McCoy as he will no be able to do many of the things he has been doing as easily and will need to step his defense up.

I am a little concerned with JJ after a year off now heading into a game with quality point guards and Clyburn who last year shined against lesser opponents and faded against tougher teams last year. Love Beck, we really have 2 solid power forwards that can board, score and play D.

Did anyone catch what Menzies said about Beck a week or so ago? They had a discussion and Beck told MM that he was a "Gamer". MM's response was that if he wanted to be a "Gamer then he had to be a Practicer" if he wanted to play. Apparently he has taken that message to heart.

Love this team and they are only going to get better as the year goes on.

The rebounding has been eye opening to me so far this season. I know the opponents haven’t been the greatest, but the rebounding has been consistent and that is a part of the game that can keep you in it if you’re struggling to find your shot.

After deep analytical reflection, weighing the pluses and minuses, I have concluded that… “Damn , these guys are good!”… Las Vegans who haven’t discovered this years Runnin’ Rebels are truly missing out on something potentially special. I'm trying to maintain perspective. I know it's a small sample size. They haven't been remotely tested yet. Yadda, yadda, yadda...But there's no denying they're fun!

McCoy seems to be ego-less, despite the probability that he will become a millionaire in the next year or two (yes, two please). Unlike many players with his size, he can catch the ball, and he knows how to finish. JJ is a point guard in the tradition of a Mark Wade, except that Johnson will actually take shots. Jordy scored more points last night (18) than Wade did in a full season (I don't know that it's true, I'm just making a point). However, Johnson, like Wade, takes more pleasure from a well-placed pass, than he would from a slam-dunk.(If he could dunk at 5'11", but you get the point)

After a sluggish start, Clyburn has proven his value to the team, on both ends of the floor. MM assigns him the opponent's best player. Different bench players have shone on different nights. Beck last night, Anthony Smith the other night. Hardy on other nights too. But if you wanted to build an imaginary team with winning in mind, you would start with Shakur Juiston. What a stud! He could go scoreless and be MVP. He dishes out assists, sets pick, and generally does the grunt-work that makes him a great teammate.
weighlifting-smiley-emoticon.gif

But what he does, like no one else on the floor, is clear the boards. He has a special talent, fine-tuned by doubtless hours and hours in the gym, for understanding the geometry of rebounds. And he has taken this knowledge onto the court, where he has put up ungodly numbers in recent games.

Shakur Is currently fifth in NCAA Div-1 Basketball rebounding, averaging 13.3 rpg. McCoy is 9th(12.3), giving the Rebels the only school with two players, not only in the Top 10, but they’re the only team with two players on the Top 50 list.

Looking forward to seeing them go up against Utah. An obvious step up in the level of competition. I’ve got to say it one more time…Damn, these guys are good!”…

Go Rebels!

Shakur is Warren Rosegreenesque

Team has scored over 90 points in 4 straight games. Did a Dave Rice team EVER do that? That includes a game with 108 points.
Does it matter??? Rice is gone, but he’s still a former Rebel. It was time for him to go and now it’s Menzies program. I’m not sure how being passive aggressive contributes to anything.

I was just trying to be optimistic. I thought of Rice’s teams because that’s the most recent memories I have and he emphasized having the team run, but others here pointed out that the team didn’t score this much with other coaches. We’ll see what happens in the next game but I’m excited about this team.

I don't think that was a Rice bash. It is interesting that he gave players freedom to shoot whenever they wanted and emphasized "running" but it often times produced a lot of bad shots and turnovers. I liked what he was trying to do and thank him for the successes he had. CMM uses a much more disciplined approach for defense and offense and it is resulting in more points, and more assists, AND more fast break dunks. Of course, still analyzing with a grain of salt as we will see what's what tonight against Utah.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been this excited to go a game. Obviously a big step up in competition, which cones at a perfect time - it seemed like the Rebels were pretty sloppy during a long stretch of the 2nd half against Rice. Who will shine off the bench, how will McCoy & Juiston do against a solid/experienced front line, how will CMM adjust in a tight game? Watch out for Beck, he really has come on the last couple of games. Hopefully some fans show up tonight - should be a really fun game.

It does matter. Comparison to past teams in regards to showing improvements is not bad. Also, I believe he was just excited to see our team scoring the ball in an efficient manner. Passive aggression would be attacking his character and him as a person. Analying his coaching and his successes/failures is not passive aggressive. Just because he was a really nice guy and a former Rebel means nothing. It's the W's, the conference championships, and making the tourney (and hopefully winning in the big dance) that we (UNLV) hire coaches.

Look at Jim Mora at UCLA. He had a pretty good first four years and a declining last few years--with a lot of talent (a QB that is projected as one of the top three drafted QB's; some say the #1 pick). #1 pick (Potential) and getting fired--does that sound familiar? Recruiting talent, developing that talent (how's that talent that was recruited by Rice in the NBA? Of course, I root for them and it kills me to see the lack of success, but that is in part to many not being NBA ready from not developing their talents--including working on their strengths and bettering their weaknesses. Obviously, it's not completely his fault that some left too early, but maybe he could have been better at mentoring that part as well. After all, his connections in regards to recruiting them was obviously there, why was the trust in advice not?). Coaching talent and winning games are also keys to success as a coach. Jim Mora even got fired before the season ended--be it was only one game but it was after losing another rivalry game. Hopefully CMM is the man to accomplish the keys to success, especially when it comes to conference play. Winning the regular season conference title and/or the conference tournament would be a great start.

CMM has the players actually running--which was promised year after year and not done. CMM doesn't seem to over coach them either. I love the way this team shares the ball, even our talented Mccoy (which was not done very well by some of past highly touted recruits). I love that different players can shine while other players don't stack the stats and we can still be successful. This is a fun team. This team has potential. Now let's see tonight what that potential could be and even more so on December 2.

What I would like to see as we prepare for conference play is better defense--maybe some full-court press-- and some better help when a player jumps out to help or better communication to improve this. Improvement at the free-throw line is key to winning close games and not letting games be as close. Better efficiency inside the paint and not missing easy layups would be good areas to improve on. We have time to improve and work on these, especially with these great tests the next couple of weeks. Oh and I love that CMM actually makes adjustments at half and they work.

Go Rebels. Don't give up!

The difference I see in scoring is the team play. This team will run, but they seem generally unselfish and will find the open guy. It's not always a 1-1 or hero ball. But you do see guys going at people as well. Perhaps well rounded what I'm looking for. It's showing up in the final game stats.

Generally impressed with Menzies as well. Watching him coach guys up as they come out of the game, the adjustments, just overall. And the players seem to be buying into what he is selling.

This team is going to lose a game - maybe many. Keep this in mind when we lose and the euphoria that we are all feeling right now turns into anger. Human nature.

I like that CMM has promised that the team will compete - he never promises the team will win. And compete and play hard we have done.

Reading a Utah fan's opinion on the game at the MWC boards, I've come to the conclusion that this game is going to come down to one thing: free throws. If we shoot them at less than 75%, we will lose.

Prediction: Utah 77 UNLV 70. We lose by 7, but the game is much closer than that as we fall behind late in the game and resort to putting Utah on the foul line where they convert.

Maybe it’s my look on things in my older age, but pointing out what wasn’t done years ago doesn’t do anything for me. I’m enjoying the team play right now and will continue to follow this program year in and year out. Rice had his chance and didn’t get it done. He’s gone, Menzies is here now and neither one has anything to do with the other. The only comparisons I will make will be in relation to Marvin Menzies led teams.

One reason I made the comparison is I think it’s a good way to measure progress. It’s common for a new coach to come in, and for fans to compare any differences they notice with things that happened when the previous coach was there.

Of course, if we see some things with this new coach that are worse than what we saw with Rice, I think it’s reasonable for a fan to point that out too.

I have nothing against Rice. The only recent coach I dislike is Chris Beard for obvious reasons.

That was incredible. I’m so used to thinking thoughts like “well maybe this team will get better” at this point in the season. That includes last season btw.

This team could still get much better and that is an exciting thought.

Wow! That’s just spooky. You nailed it!

Speaking of Beard, or Mick Cronin or any of the names floated for the job, does anyone believe that any of them could be further along with the Rebels program than the much-maligned Marvin Menzies?

Don’t get me wrong, I too had my doubts about the hire, but I’m pleading ignorance. Once the announcement was made, I read up as much as I could, and the more I learned, the more I liked what we were getting. The negative argument went like this: “Sure, he won at NMSU, but he never had to play, or recruit at this level”. True enough, but I’ve always felt like winning is winning. You can only play the teams they put in your path.

So, count me as a passenger on the Marvin Menzies train. Now get out of our way, or you’ll be flattened…
