Exactly and another thing to consider. Maiava is having a really nice year as a freshman.

That could mean three years before any incoming QBs see the field.

it could, for sure. However, guys get injured all the time, so you need capable backups. Plus, if a guy signs with UNLV this coming season, then redshirts his first year, Maiva would be a RS Junior by the time the new QB is a RS freshman. There aren't too many guys that come in and expect to be starters as freshman

Maiava fairly took DB’s position. Nothing unfair with recruiting good QBs and if one of them outplays Maiava and takes his job, so be it. If Maiava continues to improve and move UNLV forward as a program the bar to unseat him will be higher than it was for DB (who’s injuries made it easier for JM) but the potential is always there. No college athlete should consider himself untouchable.

Funny thing about the portal though is it hasn't killed G5 schools like I thought it would.

Yes top end G5 guys get poached but on the flipside you're seeing a lot of previously highly ranked recruits who get buried on depth charts at P5 schools transferring to where they think they can get PT.

I don't think it changed the playing field as much as expected. (At least by me).

I think it’s leveled the playing field for teams outside the top 20 but within the top 80.

I see us losing our recruited stars after 1-2 years but we’ll be picking up those on P5 benches. The transfer portal will be a net gain for a place like UNLV with wins under our belt and the current trajectory.
