THIS YEAR IS OVER. SHOULD WE LET KEVIN FINISH OUT HIS CONTACT NEXT YEAR AND SEE IF BETTER COACHES ARE AVAILABLE IN 2027?

There are always coaches available. We will never be able to afford to pay the buyout for the best coaches so we will be choosing from new coaches who aren't hugely paid ( the UTAH STATE model ) or coaches with past success who are no longer coaching ( Odom, Mullen). ( Admittedly, there are some on this board who believe strongly we do have enough money to get nearly any coach we can convince to come here ) IMO, trying to predict the year coaches are available to us is futile. Additionally, you aren't considering the effect on the entire brand of another year of CKK being in the dumps. It's proven that the right coach in the right program with adequate NIL can turn a program around in a year - two at the very most. In fact, If your new coach isn't successful after the second year you may be in trouble. Waiting is foolish.

Kevin should resign effective at end of season. Takes pressure off. Opens up a few things. I hope he knows his record is not good enough for a program and city in Las Vegas. I will always remember his year playing here and how very exciting it was, always wondering why he can’t see that and install an up tempo team. He for some reason has always coached conservatively, which is exactly what Las Vegas can’t stand.

I wouldn’t if I was AD.

But I certainly wouldn’t fire him midseason.

He’s nearing the end of his contract. That typically means extend or fire. Coaches typically don’t go into their final season as a lame duck, knowing they’ll be fired, would kill and commits that are more than 1 year players. So they usually push for the extension, that’s typical in the business.

So it’s a crossroad. Release or extend.

I think it’s simple.

I wouldn’t resign. That’s forfeiting money. Take the buyout owed, it was a two way contract …

Absolutely not… he doesn’t have it yet and won’t have it by next year. Should have never had this job this early in his coaching career. Really think Lon did his son a disservice by getting him in here in the 1st place with so little coaching experience. Lon had to think his initial assistants would stick around longer and help guide him a little more through the learning process but that only lasted a year. There is absolutely no reason why Utah State can be year in and year out this good with the turnover that they have experienced and we just meddle below mediocrity. Won’t get a big dollar coach, gotta believe a lot of booster funding went towards Mullen’s contract, but there is much better options out there that we can afford. It’s a pivotal time, gotta look as enticing as possible for the future of college athletics.

Kevin never should have been hired as you said. From an assistant to D1 HC is crazy. Seeing Justin Hawkins on the unr sidelines last night was bittersweet. I like the guy but, no way would consider him for a D1 HC at this time. But, he is learning and growing and will get his chance one day. He needs a HC job to get established just not here and not yet as Kevin should have done the same.

I agree. It is unreasonable to expect Kevin to resign and forego his buyout, as this may be his only career head coaching job and he needs to support his family. It is also realistic to believe that UNLV will fire him if he does not make the NCAA tournament this year. I believe that UNLV will be hiring a new coach.

That’s a good point. They have very similar resumes but Jhawk isn’t getting sniffs as HC anywhere, let alone a top 100 school. You pay your dues and climb. Oscar, similar, and he’s an asst for Rice in JC.

It’s connections to bypass what is ordinarily something built on lengthy experience. Oh, I know, guys like Sanders and Penny had zero …. But they were also superstars who can substitute their popularity and recognizability for experience (not saying it’s a route I’d go, but that gives a huge up with recruiting and energizes fan bases).

Is there anyone that believes he will not be fired at the end of the season?
I think there is a chance Harper doesn't move. From what I read, we'll be starting to learn specifics about the conference realignment about the same time a decision has to be made. I may be Harper just lets it ride. 70/30 he goes but not the 100% fans want.
