Mooring put last year’s team on his back, and carried it to their 11-14 season. Without JoJo, they might have only won 7 or 8 games. And even this season he’s hit some key shots at critical points in games that have either won games, or extended them at times when they appeared to be getting away.

Having taken all of that into consideration, and with gratitude for JoJo in assuming the unfamiliar role as point guard on last year’s squad, I’ve come to the conclusion that, at least of late, Mooring’s downside far outweighs his upside.

He continually takes ill-advised shots. His 3-point percentage is currently .333, which is not very good. But he insists on jacking them up in critical situations. His defense is okay. His one particular talent is for taking charges, which can be a valuable tactic in drawing offensive fouls. But it’s also the toughest call for referees to make. They are just as likely to call a block, as a charge. So it’s risky.

The Rebels may have needed JoJo this season, as he was the closest thing they had to an outside presence. In today’s game, the 3-point shot is a necessary component of a team’s offense. We have arguably, the best frontcourt in the Mountain West, if not in the entire nation. If McCoy and Juiston had a potent perimeter offense to complement their play down low, The Rebel s might very well be undefeated.

But Coach Menzies had to go about rebuilding this program, one brick at time. He did a spectacular job of adding some terrific bricks in McCoy and Juiston. And Johnson was the right kind of point guard, when he didn’t get too offensive-minded, to set them up to succeed.

The missing pieces were legitimate outside threats. Hopefully, next season will bring some shooters. Of course, undoubtedly the frontcourt won’t look the same. And Johnson will be lost to eligibility. So we’ll be looking at a different team.

Marvin Menzies is a big-man’s coach. He developed them at New Mexico State. I believe we can be confident that he will continue to do so here at UNLV. Now let’s see if he can come up with shooters.

Mooring wasn’t the answer. I won’t be sorry to see his eligibility run out.

It's a tough situation for him. He's a scorer who's forced to be a 3-point shooter because the team has no other better options. Like Anderson Hunt and Freddie Banks, Mooring has to have no conscience or else he starts second guessing himself. Every good team needs a scorer who is willing to take 'the' shot. The difference with Mooring and Hunt/Banks is his team doesn't play defense well enough or get enough offensive boards to compensate for his misses.

Jovan is far from the perfect player. His defense is suspect, and his shot selection is spectacularly bad. BUT I like him a lot. I think he is very unselfish; I believe that he doesn't shoot to be selfish, he shoots because he believes he's going to make the shots. All of them. He not only plays for the team, he plays hard for the team. He gives up his body, dives for loose balls, and generally has good body language and is a good teammate on and off the floor.

He could have been a very different player for us if the situation that he came into at UNLV was different and he were a freshman, but this is just the way it is.

The UNLV Hoops future is brighter today thanks in part to JoJo. When he leaves, better players may be walking through the doors because of his efforts. I am grateful that he is a Rebel.

I regret that my post may have come off as mean-spirited. It was not my intention. I am grateful for JoJo’s contribution to the Rebels. And like anyone who donned the Scarlet & Gray, I wish him great success in life, as he moves on to the next phase of his life.

As I stated, I just felt that at this point in his Rebel career, his positive contributions, are outweighed by the negatives. I fully understand the mentality of a shooter. They must believe their shots will fall. But that doesn’t mean that we have to believe it. And frankly, when JoJo puts up most of his shots, I think they’re unlikely to hit their mark. And at a .333 success rate, I’m usually right.

As I stated before, JoJo is a Rebel and I’m completely on his side. I was just trying to say that we need some outside shooters with a higher success rate in order to create a team with a better chance of going further in the MW, and beyond.`

Awwww :)

I re-upped my season tix. Basketball and Football. I wasnt going to re-up football (that's my fringe sport) and I was 50/50 on basketball. But in a moment of weakness I pulled out the credit card and sent Desiree Reed-Francois (how about I just shorten that name to Desire? lol) my money.
