I'm not worried. We have one of the top sports and administrative minds in Tina Kinzer-Murphy running the show. I'm sure she'll be able to find another coach. No one more qualified than her.

Since this is one of the top programs in the country right now (we're coming up on the 10 year anniversary of our last conference tournament win), I have helped her compile some candidates:

1. Phil Jackson. I'm sure he is looking for a challenge now after one successful season with the Knicks. He'll probably will want to live in Las Vegas.

2. Coach K. He's probably sick of all that winning. He will probably want to come here if he is looking for a lateral move.

3. Rick Pitino. Why not?

4. Greg Popovich. I'm sure he also wants a new challenge and would love to live in Las Vegas.

5. Chris Beard. By this time next week, he'll probably be looking for yet another job. And Bobby Knight says he's good. Plus, he knows how to break a hand against the wall. Another benefit.

Any others?

Listening to Mike and Pritch on ESPN 1100. They mentioned Kruger (LOL), Lavin, Menzies and Musselman (don't think the BOR would approve that.)

They just interviewed Jason King, the SBNation writer who initially broke this story, they asked him if UNLV basketball's name has taken a hit over all this over the past few months. He said, (I'm paraphrasing here) "the general consensus I got from the coaching community as UNLV went through the coaching search process after firing Dave Rice was 'They just don't know what they want to do. They don't know what level of coach they want, they don't know how much they want to pay.'"

"Normally, when you fire a coach mid-season, that's one of the main benefits. It gives you time to get your candidate list together and get the major boosters on board with whatever money you're going to need to go after those candidates."

Remember the Jay Wright talk? I wonder if he'd be interested after winning the National Championship huh?

The real tragedy of all this is the UNLV job is not as attractive now as it was on January 10th when Rice was fired. Sure, the facilities and city are top notch, but whoever comes in knows they are entering into a total rebuild AND they'll likely miss an entire recruiting cycle.

That's irrelevant, the BOR has no say in who the candidate is, they can only vote on the contract itself.

I'd be interested to hear the take from some old-timer fans, like those who posted very insightful information in that depressing but highly entertaining Massimmino post about a week back.....

If Beard does indeed leave, how would one compare the eras post-Rice and post-Massimmino (with the failed Grg takeover and then the ensuing 3 coaches in a year disaster). Which one was more embarrassing? More damaging? Which situation did our AD and admin mess up more?
