I dug up my old account to send this message.

The attendance will be a problem regardless at this point. Most fans are away and it will take something substantial to bring them back.

Unless there is a big name hire waiting and in the bag, fans aren't coming back. Hell, even a relatively big name coach probably wouldn't bring that many fans in anyway. People have turned on UNLV.

So even if attendance sucks again next year, what are the options? Fire Menzies bring in another coach that won't move the needle, just to hit reset on the rebuild again? Digging that financial hole even further?

The more I think about it, I just don't think they would fire Menzies after next season without a scandal. Especially if there is an upward trend, marginal or not.
Hire big, real big, or wait it out. You really don’t have a choice. Though they didn’t last time either, yet they did. It didn’t set us up better.

But I think the new AD thing does come into play... if they are looking to advance, and by all accounts she is, she won’t advance without a notch or two on the bedpost.

At a smaller school, definitely true. At a bigger school, probably true (if they are rebuilding from basically nothing). I worry that UNLV does not understand where it sits in the pantheon. I can't speak to DRF's leadership tenure from the inside, so hopefully it's different... but if recent history has shown us anything, it's tat UNLV will make bad decisions. I can see MM being booted, but then not having a follow up plan because boosters will want their guy (per usual) and DRF will have opinions for her guy (as an AD should). I just see a big mess firing MM...

That potential is absolutely there and is probably expected by most since we have a strong history of bungling things. It’s pretty simple. Unless you are well prepared, you cannot make any moves. If you have heavy responsibilities and you are living paycheck to paycheck, making it by the skin of your teeth, you don’t just up and quit your job unless you have something lined up.

That happened last time and it set us back, we are losing seasons.

Cannot, repeat, CANNOT do that again.

That's where it gets interesting. If she actually brought anything with her beyond ideas and good will, we will find out if/when Menzies is booted.
Everyone I’ve spoken to has said the same. She’s looking for P-5 job. You don’t get there without some strong results. You’re gonna have to make tough decisions and right calls.

I get the "UNLV likes to screw things up" angle. I also get that DRF has an opportunity to make a name for herself with a college basketball coach. .

But I think she is smart enough to know the situation. I wouldn't be surprised if she is feeling out options behind the scenes, but she has probably come to the realization that she probably doesn't have a great option. Sure she will get heat about the budget, but at least all of this she inherited and not her direct fault.

I imagine she will spend more time with football, trying to fund raise and get people to the stadium. Hopefully we have a successful season there.

Behind the scenes we don’t know what is or what isn’t going on. If she’s a good AD and knows her stuff, if she is anticipating making a move, she is aligning for that as we speak (pledged donor dollars). Of course, if she can’t, she can’t. Gotta stick it out. Or if she’s comfortable with our direction, she doesn’t have to. But her intention is a move or possible move, she has to be getting it done now, which we just do not know... can’t wait until last hour.

Menzies is smart and has a plan. In the past UNLV has always had great guards and hoped we could get some kind of presence down low to compliment the guards. This year was the opposite as we had a great duo down low but inconsistent guard play. JoJo certainly got hot at times and carried the Rebels for a few wins but it just wasn't consistent. Today's game is dominated by guard play. I think next year the Rebs will take a step in the right direction with Bryce Hamilton and Trey Woodbury coming in. Hopefully Hardy has a good off season and has learned from this year about the riggers of the conference season. I believe next year will be better than this year.

Since the president is out now, bring back Livengood. At least we know his track record and that he would stick around and be a lifer!

Depends who you talked to. I liked Livengood, I think he had vision and had enough respect that he could navigate waters. Others despised him. Don’t know much about DRF yet, but other than Livengood, our AD’s have been horrible with Finfrock and TKM at the top of the crappy list. And it’s not like Weaver and Cavagnaro were any good. Hamrick wasn’t likable but he was far from the worst. Brad was the best.
