Hey Reb! any idea who?

In one play he got more punt return yards than we have all season. To be fair, though, that isn't saying much.

Liberty's Balderas commits to UNLV
Johnny Balderas waited a long time for his first college football scholarship offer.

Once it came, the Liberty senior wasted little time making a decision.

Balderas verbally committed to UNLV on Wednesday after the Rebels offered earlier in the day.

“I’ve been talking to them since the spring,” he said.

Balderas has been a standout for Liberty on offense, defense and special teams. He leads the Patriots with 17 catches for 305 yards and two touchdowns. UNLV is recruiting him to play defense, where Balderas has 24 tackles and three interceptions. He’s also averaging 35.3 yards per kick return.

Balderas, who started high school at Shafter, moved to Bakersfield before his junior season after his grandmother passed away. Two years ago, getting a shot to play college football did not seem attainable.

“I didn’t get any offers in the beginning of my junior year or senior year,” Balderas said. “UNLV stuck to me since then … I just felt UNLV reached out every day and helped me and said ‘We’re going to be right here for you.’”

Verbal commitments are non-binding; football players can sign binding letters of intent starting Feb. 1.
