Can you imagine being a decent but not NBA-good player who ran out of eligibility just before NIL really took off? That would SUCK.
On the other side, can you imagine being a student owing over $100K in student loans while being required to pay an athletic fee for athletes that are walking out of school with 6-7 figures in their pockets and no debt? Can you imagine being a decent but not NBA-good player who ran out of eligibility just before NIL really took off? And for many people, unfortunately the majority, that degree gets you a job making lattes or something similar. On the other side, can you imagine being a student owing over $100K in student loans while being required to pay an athletic fee for athletes that are walking out of school with 6-7 figures in their pockets and no debt?
My older son has been smart enough to get into cyber security (no college degree required and typically start at around $70K and make over $100K within 3-5 years or less) and is going to an online school after the fact in case he wants to move into management. Still in his early 20's, makes around $200K per year without a degree, and has zero debt. Ge a degree in art history, gender studies, early childhood education, liberal arts, performing arts, ethnic studies, etc. and you will be lucky to make $50K per year while the starting pay for In-n-Out in Las Vegas is around $30K per year. The big difference is the In-n-Out employee doesn't spend a penny on their education, while the college student spends $100-200K or more and is most like carrying a large debt load to pay off! So now you will spend the next 10-20 years trying to catch up with the In-N-Out employee! Think about it!And for many people, unfortunately the majority, that degree gets you a job making lattes or something similar.
My brothers daughter finished a Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Duke a couple of years ago.The trades are also excellent careers that don’t require college. Yes, they have trade schools, but you aren’t taking Music Appreciation classes (Rock History wasn’t available) that make you think that it’s all a money grab since I could have finished undergrad in 2 years without the BS.
I was fortunate to go to a new grad program that didn’t know how to bill as a grad program yet, so I wasn’t matching my peers with $100,000-120,000 (25 years ago) in debt. Basically, I found a work around.
Currently, one would have to love being a PT to go through school and get that degree since it will take years to pay off those loans since PT doesn’t pay as well as needed to justify those costs.
Damn, I've got more hair on my head than he does and I'm 76😲
