MEMPHIS (AP) — FedEx on Friday pledged $25 million over the next five years to be used in sponsorship deals with University of Memphis athletes, a huge boost for the school's name, image and likeness compensation efforts.

The Memphis-based shipping giant said the program will initially focus on football, men’s and women’s basketball and other women’s sports. The deal was facilitated by Altius Sports Partners, a company that works with dozens of schools on NIL activities.

The deal is for $5 million per year, an especially significant sum for a school that does not play in a wealthy power conference. The Tigers compete in the American Athletic Conference.

I got a feeling that Memphis is be part of an expansion soon with UNLV and others

I noticed Altius Partners lists University of Nevada as a client, certainly if UNLV doesn't have someone working on these arrangements they need to get the ball rolling. The landscape of what was college athletics continues to evolve.

The money arms race is picking up steam fast for college sports. Players making more in college than going pro in all but the lottery pick cases. Many players making similar money to the coach.

Will it be time to blow up college sports soon? Viewers are turning off free agency mens ncaa hoop in droves. If people stop caring, the whole sport drops in a huge way. Power conferences will dominate even more than they have in the past.

Mid majors will soon dye out. Unlv either has to get into some kind of power conference soon, or unlv sports goes further down than it already has.

They cant go cheap and expect GOOD results. We are not USU. IT not like we are playing in a HS gym. IT not like we have a population of 400,000. It not like we dont have a top notch practice facilities. There is Zero excuses why we are where we are. ZERO. Im sure over the last few HC hirings we could of had much better if we just came up with a better $ package. They could of made plenty of money on the backend. How much money were they making with HC Rice?? The Mack was 10-12000 PLUS every game. OUR UNLV brand is fading fast and im talking about the fans that have been around for the last 30 years. Not alot of new blood. This is like South Korea birthrate. If u dont replenish new fans it will eventually collapse.

"Mid majors will soon dye out."

Die out - no. But I do think we have a good chance of @ 20 extremely well funded super programs and everyone else becoming what D 3 is now.

If I was a local Las Vegas Casino
I would partner with one of the Pro teams in Las Vegas and choose to spend my marketing $$$$ on a bigger player than a mid major college team -

And they do

Since Pro teams have moved into Vegas (and will continue to)
they will cut into the BUDGET that could've been UNLV's

Boyd Gaming has been the only consistent donor to UNLV among the major casino companies. With UNLV Alum Bill Hornbuckle as CEO of MGM the time for them to step is during his tenure. If doesn’t happen then it probably never will.

UNLV trains and educates a lot of their employees at no cost to them. So yeah, it's been a one-way street for a long time.
Gaming contributes about 40% of the state general fund which funds higher ed so there’s that. But I get your point and agree NV’s gaming companies (other than Boyd) need to step up big time.

Have you guys ever gone inside the gaming building that’s on the corner of Swenson and Flamingo? Thing’s been empty forever..

The students pay for their education, so in reality if they should be helping anyone, it should be with scholarships for students who pay their own way through UNLV.
