Eric Olen?

His buyout is structured to be the remaining amount on his contract... his salary is 1 million a year through 2029 with a 100k increase
each season. Im not sure if it can be negotiated down since they're a protection for the university but it might be possible, or payable over the course of a coach staying at his next stop- ie- If Kennedy comes in and wins in 1 year and jumps to a Big P4, we arent responsible for his buyout, the next bigger school would be.. Indiana just did that with Devries contract with WVU and covering the remaining buyout at Drake
The majority of time a buyout can be negotiated is when the University of the departing coach wants him gone. They are joyful to get money when they were devising plans to fire him.

and you think Kennedy who they just signed to an extension is someone UAB is trying to get rid of? I dont see it being negotiated down, but rather his contract language with UNLV would include provisions that pay the university back buyout funds should he get poached that drops each season he coaches at UNLV. so lets say it starts at 4 million, then we add our own 5-8 million dollar buyout onto it, he stays 1 season, the poaching school pays 12 million, he stays 2, 11, etc... its incentive to retain a coach but also protection to not be paying for someone who isnt around to another university

I think we can rule out Olen, Harper would have moved quickly if he was sold on him. Must have been a bad interview. Who knows.

We can also rule out guys like Craig Smith, Keatts etc. anyone that was available to coach NOW is probably not going to be hired. Same with Bryce Drew.

Hodgson just wrapped up his season, so if nothing in 24hours, it’s probably not him either. The fact it wasn’t announced this AM probably isn’t good for his candidacy.

That leaves Hartman, Kennedy, and a dark horse candidate that is….Porter Moser. There’s speculation that there’s negotiation on his buyout at Oklahoma right now.

I don’t think UNLV is involved yet but given the delay in naming a HC, this could be the reason. Moser has interviewed at unlv before and I’m sure Harper is familiar with him given Harper has been around for those interviews and discussions. Oklahoma could theoretically move on from Moser with a settlement/buyout and hire someone else they have in mind. Niko of CSU was discussed at Oklahoma but he’s gone to Minnesota just now.

I heard he interviewed Coach K yesterday and Coach K was very nervous. He was stuttering, fumbling his answers, and even accidentally referred to Jerry Tarkanian as "my dad." It was a very awkward interview and Harper politely told him he would be moving on with another candidate.
It is down between three final candidates: Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, and John Wooden. Word on the street is none of these three meet the expectations of UNLV fans!

My push Menzies? TF??

No one was pushing for Menzies when he was hired.

And I am not pushing for Hartman specifically I am pushing for some level of optimism IF he ends up being hired. If he doesn't, no problem with me.

The split of the fanbase with coaching hires is toxic. People will be skeptical of any hire we make and they will talk shit and pounce at any chance they have given the first sign of adversity, instead of trying to rally a little, show some early support, and hope for the best instead of only expecting the worst.

Hartman at least seems to be somewhat of a finalist. So I look to see WHY he would be rated ahead of others instead of being convinced that he shouldn't. Anyone convinced of anything at this point is willfully ignorant or just a stubborn A hole.
Apologies I didn’t mean you, using voice recognition that is supposed to say THE push for Menzies. I went back-and-forth with two posters on this site about how great he was going to be. I prefer realism over optimism I would be optimistic over some like say Olen but an assistant no one else wants and here we are in the midst of another hiring cycle and again his name is being mentioned nowhere besides here. Realistic is he is Menzies the sequel. And if it is him the school will blow sunshine up our backside about a great hire he is.

All of this seems moot. But I think Menzies is a bad comp. Sure they both coached here for 1 year under a Kruger, but after that they are quite different.
I get the "feeling" of that though.

Sorry I don’t see the point?
Menzies was hired over 1 month along in the hiring process than we are currently. We'd gone through so much drama and TIME that we were desperate to hire a coach - any coach. The current process is nothing like that. If we hire a coach - and he bolts - and another month transpires without a coach then we'll be in the same situation.

Technically it was a 4 month long process, since Rice was canned in January. Remember the idiot TKM tried to tell us they needed to get a running start to get a good coach?

Only to be used as leverage multiple times. Hopefully we get an official announcement soon so Hodgson can hit the ground running.

I see, yes the situation was different we were more desperate then. Although not as desperate it seems we are once again desperate and overreaching for candidates.

IMO, many coaches we'd be happy with as fans just don't want to be associated with our brand.
But do we know that? Was Crean approached and said no? Or Marshall? Heck if Scheyer thought he was getting hired here instead of Kruger our rep couldn't have been that bad. Nice decision by UNLV on that note.
